  • An Ear for Sweet Sound of Success - Clive Davis still rocks the pop world, knowing when to handpick a song and when to step aside ... "A discerning person recognizes that when you are running a company, you're dealing with a mixture of commerce and art. The important thing is to know when you are dealing with art and when you are dealing with commerce, and I know the difference." He's been famously hands-on when picking songs for singers sucn as Whitney Houston and Kelly Clarkson, seeming to find as much enthusiasm for those who interpret songs as those who write them ... As chairman and chief executive of BMG U.S., Davis heads a recording empire that includes approximately 170 artists, 500 employees and generates about $1 billion a year in sales ... Davis hasn't, however, sold millions of records just by finding new artists and songs. He has also been adroit at helping verteran artists rebound ... Most recently, he reteamed with Barry Manilow, whom he hadn't worked with in years. While watching Manilow's concert in Las Vegas, Davis came up with the idea of Manilow making an album filled with ballads from the '50s. "The thing in the back of my mind was that if Barry singing songs from the '50s was a hit, then there were all the other decades," Davis says. "Barry sings the '60s, the '70s..." He smiles but he's not kidding. After Manilow's '50s collection sold 1 million copies following its release last January, Arista release Manilow's '60s CD in October and it sold 202,000 copies the first week. Clive Jay Davis is serious when it comes to making hits ... Mixing and Matching: Davis started by finding songs on other people's albums that he felt had potential. His first big score at Arista was with a song, "Brandy," that caught his ear on a record by Scott English. Davis didn't care muc for the title or the song's tempo, but he liked the song. The trick was selling it to Manilow. "Barry Manilow was very upfront. He thought of himself as a writer, and I was trying to get him to sing someone else's song. He said, 'I want to be Cole Porter and Irving Berlin and you want to make me into Andy Williams or Perry Como.'" But when "Mandy" helped Manilow's 1974 album sell more than a million copies, he became a Clive believer. When listening to a song, Davis looks for lyrics that are believable and a story that he feels is universal, and a melody that sticks with you. Then, he has to match it with the right singer. "It starts and ends with talent for me. I look for someone who has a star quality, who has the potential to be a headliner, someone who is unique." (Los Angeles Times - Calendar, 1/14/2007)

  • Message from Manilow - Barry Manilow, his manager and two friends were sighted in the Annenberg Theater audience, laughing at Del Shores' "Southern Baptist Sissies" last week. At intermission he told me (Janet Newcomb, Special to The Desert Sun) about his upcoming new CD and double-DVD set and said he is still recuperating in his Palm Springs home after recent hip surgery. Though he limped ever-so-slightly (and was popping menthol cough drops to keep a sore throat at bay) he asked me to tell Desert Sun readers that he's "feeling much better, and to thank everyone for all their cards and good wishes." • First Sighting - Veteran Emmy-winning talk show host Dick Cavett recalls the first time America set eyes on pop idol Barry Manilow back in the early 70s. "Bette Davis sang 'They're Either Too Young or Too Old' on the second show she did with me," recalls Cavett. "And we had to get a piano player. The director said I know a guy who'd be just right for this.' So this guy came in and was so excited because he was a great Bette Davis fan. He had on a silver metallic shirt and accompanied her perfectly. As the applause was dying down I slipped her his name and she said 'Thank you, Barry Manilow.' It was probably the first time his name had been uttered on TV." (LA Daily News, 9/25/2006)

  • Manilow beats our Hugh - Hugh Jackman is the king of the high kick, but Barry Manilow, on two dodgy hips, beat him to the prize at the 58th Annual Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. Manilow was one of many surprise winners at TV's night of nights ... "Holy mackerel! I can't be more surprised," Manilow said in his acceptance speech after winning the individual performance in a variety or music program category. Manilow, 60, who won for a taped performance of his Las Vegas show, Music and Passion, will enter hospital tomorrow to have operations on both hips, injured from decades of high-energy performances. "This goes into the operating room with me tomorrow as a good luck charm," said Manilow, holding up his Emmy. (The Age, 8/28/2006)

  • Dick Clark humbled by Emmys tribute - Dick Clark was honored Sunday night on the Emmy stage for his vast contributions to the television business, particularly the iconic weekly music series "American Bandstand." Introduced by Simon Cowell of "American Idol" fame, Clark, 76, received a thunderous standing ovation that seemed almost to embarrass him. "Sit down, sit down, please," he implored. Clark's remarks were short but poignant. Speaking haltingly, he said: "The Emmy people called and asked if I could walk out and say thanks. My wife joked, 'Walk? He's just begun to learn to walk again. This show might run a little long.'" He added: "Before I had my stroke, I was thinking about all of the things I had become involved with over my life: music, comedy, drama, game and talk shows, even reality TV. I now realize that I have accomplished my childhood dream: to be in show business. Everybody should be so lucky to have their dreams come true. I've been truly blessed. I thank you very, very much." Barry Manilow, who performed a tribute to Dick Clark during the show, praised the TV legend backstage. "He introduced us to all sorts of great music," said Manilow, who co-wrote the "American Bandstand" theme song. "We wouldn't have the music we have if it weren't for Dick Clark continually fighting to introduce pop music to the public." (Reuters.com, 8/28/2006)

  • Clark sits for Emmy honor - When the Emmys called and asked if Dick Clark would walk out and say a few words about the tribute that was paid to him Sunday night during the three-hour telecast, his wife joked, "Walk?" "He'd much rather be out ther producing this thing than sitting there," Barry Manilow told reporters backstage. "This is a stroke. Everybody gets it in a different way. • Emmys celebrate Dick Clark - "America's oldest living teenager," Dick Clark, was feted for his accomplishments in music and TV during Sunday's Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Clark's is one of the few names recognizable to generations of TV viewers, "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell noted in introducing Clark. Clark -- who suffered a stroke in late 2004 -- said he accomplished his "childhood dream" with his show business career. "Everyone should be so blessed," he said. Barry Manilow -- who sang and co-wrote the theme to Clark's long-running "American Bandstand" -- delayed his double-hip replacement surgery to perform a musical tribute to the producer on the Emmys telecast. "Tomorrow they rip me apart and put me back together again," Manilow told "Access Hollywood's" Billy Bush during NBC's pre-ceremony special. Minutes after performing a tribute to Dick Clark, Barry Manilow won his second career Emmy, taking the award for individual performer in a variety music or comedy series. "This goes into the operating room with me Monday morning as a good luck charm," said Manilow, who delayed having hip surgery so he could take part in a tribute to TV legend Dick Clark on the Emmys telecast.
