- Tune in to NBC on Dec. 22 to see Brian Boitano skate to live music provided by Barry Manilow - on an ice rink constructed on the infield of San Francisco's AT&T Park. Entertainment Weekly: "Why Barry Manilow?" Brian: "Every year I have a different musical guest. I had met him before, and I thought Well, I'll just ask him. So my people talked to his people and they said, 'He's coming out with a new album, The Greatest Songs of the Seventies, and he would be willing to do four of the covers from his new album, and then four of his classics that he's rerecording acoustically for the album.' So the hard part was picking four of the acoustic classic hits - they're all my favorites. I chose Even Now. Dorothy Hamill wanted really badly to skate to Weekend in New England. Then as a tribute to my father, I skated to I Write the Songs. Then Barry rerecorded a special dance mix of ''Could It Be Magic for the end of the show. A dance mix of Could it Be Magic - it's incredible." (Entertainment Weekly, 12/20/2007)

- Manilow teams with Brian Boitano for Skating Spectacular - The familiar chant of "Barry" rang through the Giants' ballpark on Friday night, but the Barry who took the field was belting out timeless hits instead of towering home runs. Barry Manilow's smooth melodies set the tone in AT&T Park for the "AFLAC Presents Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular," which also featured fellow Olympic gold medalists Dorothy Hamill, David Pelletier and Viktor Petrenko. The gold medalists were joined by Olympians and professional skaters Steven Cousins, Yuka Sato, Jason Dungjen, Elana Elanova, Andrei Khvalko and ice acrobats Vladamir Besedin and Oleksiy Polishuk. Boitano, Dungjen, Pelletier and Cousin burst on the ice in the second act, wearing Giants uniforms and swinging baseball bats, and skating over the real infield diamond, hidden beneath a rink that looked magical under the starry night and colored lighting. Manilow stood above it all singing some of his greatest songs like "Could It Be Magic" and "Ready To Take A Chance Again," as well as '70s classics like the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." Boitano and Hamill really got the show going with a stunning pairs routine while Manilow accompanied them with "The Way We Were." Before his second performance of the evening, set to Manilow's "I Write the Songs," Boitano explained this was the only song his father ever requested he skate to. "Well, Dad, I bet you never imagined I'd be skating to it while Barry sang it. This one's for you," Boitano said in a video before the routine ... The show came to an end with all the skaters taking the ice in red holiday costumes for a grand finale that was set to Manilow's "Could It Be Magic." The evening certainly was! (MLB.com, 12/6/2007)

- Boitano, Manilow break the ice at AT&T Park - San Francisco's AT&T Park has seen its share of Barrys: Bonds, Zito and now ... Manilow. Yes, Barry Manilow was on hand Wednesday night for what has to be a Bay Area first: an ice "spectacular" in a ball park. The event's official title was "Aflac Presents Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular Starring Barry Manilow." Audience members paid between $55 and $152.25 to watch professional skaters speed around the ice while Manilow sang songs from the '70s, all while a fleet of cameras captured the action for a Dec. 22 broadcast on NBC and Dec. 23 on the Style network. Ice skating is an athletic event, and watching it live can be thrilling. Boitano, 44, is an exciting skater, and his solos -- one to John Lennon's "Imagine" and another, a tribute to his father, while Manilow sang "I Write the Songs" -- were dynamic and razor sharp. Dorothy Hamill stole the show with her Act 1 closer set to Manilow singing "Weekend in New England." Yuka Sato impressed with her jumps and twirls (accompanied by Manilow's "My Eyes Adored You") ... Pairs skaters Elena Leonova and Andrei Khvalko performed a real dazzler [routine] to Manilow performing "Even Now." Viktor Petrenko strutted his cowboy stuff in Act 1 and then unleashed his Olympic champion in Act 2, with Manilow singing "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." And Steven Cousins tried hard to impress during Manilow's "It Never Rains in California." (Contra Costa Times, 12/6/2007)

- Boitano Psychs Up for Superstar Event - About his upcoming appearance this week at AT&T Park, skating to live music by Barry Manilow and a full orchestra, Brian Boitano says, "God, I hope it doesn't rain." The outdoor show, the first of its type at the San Francisco baseball field actually opens with the number "It Never Rains in Southern California," says Boitano. The 1988 Olympic gold medalist has lined up a cool roster of guests for the Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular, which will be filmed before a live audience Wednesday night and will air on NBC on Dec. 22. His friend Dorothy Hamill will join him in a duet to the song "The Way We Were"; she also solos to Manilow's "Weekend in New England." Boitano is particularly thrilled to be working with Manilow. "I try to have a musical guest every year, we were looking to get someone really exciting this time," he says. The skater seems to have gotten over what he calls the "impossible" task of selecting Manilow's inevitably limited set list. Manilow will sing eight songs in the show. Four are classic hits, including a special dance mix of "Could It Be Magic" ("I put 'booms' in here and there," Boitano says). He'll also perform tunes from his new album, a collection of covers called "The Greatest Songs From the Seventies." (San Francisco Examiner, 12/3/2007)

- "In the Swing of Christmas," Barry Manilow (Hallmark/Arista) - Available in Hallmark stores, Manilow's third holiday disc turns out to be his best because it's stripped down and jazzy. The man who writes the songs that make the whole world sing is laidback here, working with two different jazz trios, and he sounds better than he has in a while. The most interesting cut is the Matt Dennis-Thomas Adair song "Violets for Your Furs," a sweet love song. Manilow's multi-tracked voice on "Silver Bells" is stunning, and though not technically a Christmas song, though it is by Irving "White Christmas" Berlin, "Count Your Blessings" is a warm and wonderful album closer.
