  • "Copacabana" set to make a musical splash - Barry Manilow's Copacabana has been on Brauer College drama teacher Anna Gauge's 'to-do list' since she saw the splashy musical at England's famous West End in the 1990s. This weekend she can tick it off as a cast of 43 performers, about 15 backstage crew and 16 musicians take to the Warrnambool Entertainment Centre stage. "We've done a lot of fun, easy musicals so we thought rather than always doing upbeat and funky ones with pop music we'd look for a challenge for the kids," Ms. Gauge said. She said the school production would stick to the original script, which followed the imagination of aspiring songwriter Stephen. Stephen wrote a musical set in show-biz New York which followed the love story of Lola and Tony. Tony had to rescue Lola after Rico abducted her and took her to his rival nightclub in Havana ... Copacabana is at the entertainment centre tonight, with more performances tomorrow at 1 pm and 8 pm. (Warrnambool Standard, 8/18/2006)

The songsmith told The Associated Press he plans to release "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties" just in time for Halloween. "I think these songs from the '60s are more well-known to a lot of people than the songs of the '50s," he said. Manilow also said he reordered more than 100 songs for the '60s album, but not every song fit his style. "For instance, the Motown catalog. (The Desert Sun, 8/4/2006)

  • Manilow will sing tribute to Dick Clark - Barry Manilow will sing the American Bandstand theme song live at the Emmys during a special tribute to Dick Clark NBC plans for the Aug. 27 awards show. Executive producer Ken Ehrlich said the lovefest would demonstrate the connection between Bandstand and American Idol as "cultural touchstones" as it marked the 50th anniversary of Clark's becoming the dance show's host at the old WFIL studios in Philadelphia. The tribute will include snippets from other Clark shows, which ranged from TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes to the American Music Awards."Dick Clark was and is the variety-TV producer who best had his finger on popular taste," said Ehrlich, a veteran of scores of music shows, including Philadelphia's Live 8 last summer. Manilow and Bruce Sussman added lyrics to the instrumental "Bandstand Boogie" in 1975, and Clark soon adopted that version for the show. Manilow is Emmy-nominated for best individual performance in a variety or music program for his PBS special, Music and Passion. (Philadelphia Inquirer, 7/24/2006)

Secada was invited onto the Las Vegas Hilton Showroom stage by Barry Manilow on Saturday night and the two performed a bouncy version of "Copacabana (At the Copa)" for the thrilled full-house crowd. The walk-on appearance wasn't a complete surprise - the two had made plans for the duet during the week and Secada took part in Saturday's sound check. Secada's appearance served a larger purpose - to plug a Secada concert in September at the Hilton. Manilow announced that Secada will be filling in at the Hilton Showroom on Sept. 15, when Manilow is off. (Las Vegas Sun, 7/17/2006)

  • Michael Lent & Friends featuring keyboardist Ron Pedley - If you're a musician in Barry Manilow's band and play gigs literally around the world and 30 weeks a year in Las Vegas, what do you do when you have a little free time on your hands? Play some more! That's what Michael Lent does when he has a hiatus from Manilow's band, for which he has been playing guitar for almost 10 years now. Last April, when Lent had a little break from the band, he returned home to the Monterey Peninsula for some R&R and ended up playing two nights at Monterey Live with an all-star roster of local players. That went so well and was so well-received by the audience, Lent is booked to play one weekend a month through the end of the year. To keep it fresh, Lent will alternate players, bringing in guest artists from Los Angeles and mix and match local players. This weekend's sessions (Friday and Saturday night beginnng at 9), Lent recruited a fellow Manilow bandmember, keyboardist Ron Pedley, who is the only player on Manilow's band who has been with the singer longer than Lent. Pedley is also a music biz veteran, leading his own groups Uncle Festive and Kombo, which recorded for the Verve label and got a lot of airplay on smooth jazz stations. (Monterey Herald, 6/8/2006)

  • Manilow to drive out 'hooligans' - A council in the Australian city of Sydney is taking radical measures against car-revving youths - the calming tones of singer Barry Manilow. Officials in Rockdale say that local youths have been hanging around in car parks, revving their engines and generally annoying residents. So the council has decided to strike back. From July, Barry Manilow's greatest hits will be piped into one car park in a bid to drive the youths away. Deputy mayor Bill Saravinovski said the decision was taken because the youths were intimidating local people. The music will be played for a six-month trial period at a car park in the suburb of Brighton-le-Sands. (BBC News, 6/6/2006)

  • Trouble with gangs? Put on Manilow - Australians sick of the late-night music and revving engines of gangs of boy racers have unveiled a secret weapon - Barry Manilow. Councillors in Rockdale, a suburb of Sydney, hope that the crooners' ballads will drive away the dozens of young "hoons", as boy racers are known, who are making residents' lives a misery. Loudspeakers will belt out hits such as "Mandy," "I Write the Songs" and "Copacabana" over the car park where the youths gather nightly to drink, smoke and compare souped-up cars. The idea follows an experiment a few years ago in Hobart, Tasmania, where Bing Crosby music was successfully used to drive teenage loiterers out of a shopping centre. (The Telegraph, 6/6/2006)

  • At the KOPA? Station goes all Manilow, all the time - "I write the songs that make the whole world sing; I write the songs of love and special things; I write the songs that make the young girls cry; I write the songs, I write the songs" ... Yes, Barry, you do write the songs. And Las Cruces radio station KXPZ 99.5-FM is playing them. All Barry Manilow. All day and all night. Barry 99 is dedicated to Barry Manilow, the prolific singer/songwriter who has produced 44 albums since his self-titled debut in 1973. "This has never been done before. It's a totally unique format," said Mike McKay, executive vice president of Bravo Mic Communications, which in April purchased the station from Rio Grande Christian Broadcasting of El Paso for $1.4 million. The station began broadcasting Manilow songs on Monday and hasn't stopped, except when completing work to the station's 100,000-watt transformer, which McKay said, "was in need of major repairs." McKay said the station has hundreds of Manilow songs in its database, including hits such as "I Write the Songs," "Mandy" and "Copacabana (At The Copa)," as well as less popular Manilow tunes from B-sides of one of the artist's 22 gold- or platinum-selling records. McKay said he's heard of other U.S.-based radio stations that exclusively play one artist, such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles but never one that exclusively played Barry Manilow. "Barry is one of the hottest acts out there right now. He's been reborn," McKay said in explaining his idea to put Manilow on the air. The No. 1-selling adult contemporary artist his record sales total 65 million worldwide Manilow scored another hit with "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties," released Jan. 31 on Arista Records. The album topped the Billboard 200 chart on Feb. 18 and has remained among the top 50 selling albums since. Sun Lanes General Manager Phil Kinzer Jr., a self-described "Fanilow," said he's taken a liking to Barry 99. "I grew up with Barry - he's had a huge influence on what we hear today," Kinzer said. "You always hear other people singing his songs Mandy,' Copacabana' Copa' really set the tone for what became known as the funk era." It makes one wonder why the call letters for all-Manilow station aren't KOPA. "The station is in a constant state of evolution," McKay said, alluding to fact that the station's Web site advertises KXPZ 99.5-FM as The Rocket. McKay said he would comment on The Rocket "early next week." Until then Fanilows, it's all Barry, all the time. (Silver City Sun-News (Las Cruces, NM), 5/19/2006)

I listen to a lot of 1970s music ... A lot of my fondest memories were being a little kid and I had my Matchbox cars playing on the carpet while dad was running the race. I'd be listening to a race on the radio at home and playing with my cars. And when the race was over, I wasn't done racing my cars. They'd start playing country music on the radio and I would sit there and listen to that for awhile. It's not just the 1970s, though. I listen to a little bit of Elvis. And Barry Manilow - how about that? (Myrtle Beach Online, 5/20/2006)

  • Nina sings Manilow - Fresh from her recent triumphs in the concert scene, Nina returns to the Music Museum for a series of shows featuring the music of none other than the man Rolling Stone magazine dubbed "The Showman of Our Generation: Barry Manilow." Titled "Very Manilow," this show will be the first time that Nina will stage a concept show. Why Barry Manilow? "Kasi grabe ang following niya," Nina says, referring to the millions of fans that call themselves "Fanilows" ... "Plus there are people who may not really like him, but they know and love some of his songs." "Very Manilow" will feature Nina singing some of those songs with a twist. Some of Barrys biggest hits like "Copacabana (At The Copa)," the tragic story of the showgirl Lola and her bartender lover Tony will be given a new, R&B/Hiphop flavor. The 1978 hit "Can't Smile Without You" will also be given the remix treatment from a moody pop ballad, it will be transformed into a bouncy, reggaeflavored ditty. Other songs will be made into duets to be performed by Nina and a guest, paying tribute to various highlights in the Barry Manilow songbook. But his stellar career in the music industry as an arranger, a composer, performer, and producer isn't all that Barry has to his name. His illustrious career in music began when he became Bette Midlers arranger, musical director, and pianist in 1972. In that same year, he signed with Bell Records (later Arista Records), and began work on his debut album. He released "Mandy" in 1974 and it became a huge hit, launching a career that now boasts of over 50 hits, among them "Even Now," "I Write The Songs," "Ready To Take A Chance Again," "Somewhere Down The Road," "Weekend In New England," and many more. Since then, his unparalleled career has covered nearly every aspect of the entertainment industry. He has won several awards for his work in film, television, and theater, an is showing no signs of slowing down. "Very Manilow" is sure to be one of this most anticipated concerts a grand celebration of songs of our lives and the man who wrote them. (Manila Bulletin Online, 5/17/2006)

  • Masterworks gives its regards to Manilow - He writes the songs the whole world sings. So, it's only natural that the Masterworks Chorale would want to salute Barry Manilow during its annual Broadway concert Sunday (May 7) at the Lincoln Theatre in Belleville, Illinois. It will be the perfect complement to a night of show tunes that have stood the test of time, including music from such classics as "West Side Story" and "Oklahoma." Tickets for the 7:30 program are $15 in advance or $18 at the door -- $5 for students. Since 1974, Manilow has found himself atop the nation's adult contemporary charts more than a dozen times. After first gaining fame through his memorable ad jingles, Manilow struck pop gold with "Mandy" and has been flying high ever since. In fact, the toughest part for the chorale probably was whittling down Manilow's long string of hits into a manageable length. By themselves, they could fill an entire concert or two with such favorites as "Copacabana," "Looks Like We Made It" and "Can't Smile Without You." The Manilow medley will highlight the second half of the concert, which will also include selections from "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Oklahoma." Advance tickets for the 24th annual "Give My Regards to Broadway" affair are available at The Vineyard, 6500 W. Main St., and The Basket Case, 1680 Lebanon Ave., or by calling 236-0182. • Music-loving mums rock CD sales - Many middle-aged parents are now buying more CDs than their teenage children, according to figures from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Neil Sedaka is benefiting from a more mature audience and he is not alone. Over the last few weeks, Andrea Bocelli, Russell Watson, Il Divo, The Carpenters, Barry Manilow, David Essex and Johnny Mathis have all had hit albums. It is all a reflection of a significant change in the music industry - the power of "mum rock". Forty-somethings now buy more than twice as many pop CDs as teenagers and the gap is growing every year. The generation gap that used to be reflected by music is fast disappearing and it is the 40- and 50-somethings who are now pop's biggest fans. (BBC.co.uk, 4/20/2006)

  • Music Labels Jockey for 'American Idol' Exposure - "American Idol," which has been averaging 30 million viewers a night, has crushed every rival on the television schedule. As the stature of "Idol" has increased, so has the eagerness of record labels hoping to place their artists on the show ... The show has made a habit of picking artists who happen to have new CD's to promote, including Barry Manilow and Shakira. The show has a deal under which the winner's CD will be distributed by Sony BMG's RCA Music Group. That label is also home to acts that are appearing this season, including Mr. Manilow and Rod Stewart. But the producers have been willing to spread the exposure a bit; they had an episode with Stevie Wonder (Universal) and one with Kenny Rogers (EMI). (New York Times, 4/18/2006)
