- "Copacabana" set to make a musical splash - Barry Manilow's Copacabana has been on Brauer College drama teacher Anna Gauge's 'to-do list' since she saw the splashy musical at England's famous West End in the 1990s. This weekend she can tick it off as a cast of 43 performers, about 15 backstage crew and 16 musicians take to the Warrnambool Entertainment Centre stage. "We've done a lot of fun, easy musicals so we thought rather than always doing upbeat and funky ones with pop music we'd look for a challenge for the kids," Ms. Gauge said. She said the school production would stick to the original script, which followed the imagination of aspiring songwriter Stephen. Stephen wrote a musical set in show-biz New York which followed the love story of Lola and Tony. Tony had to rescue Lola after Rico abducted her and took her to his rival nightclub in Havana ... Copacabana is at the entertainment centre tonight, with more performances tomorrow at 1 pm and 8 pm. (Warrnambool Standard, 8/18/2006)

- Manilow will sing tribute to Dick Clark - Barry Manilow will sing the American Bandstand theme song live at the Emmys during a special tribute to Dick Clark NBC plans for the Aug. 27 awards show. Executive producer Ken Ehrlich said the lovefest would demonstrate the connection between Bandstand and American Idol as "cultural touchstones" as it marked the 50th anniversary of Clark's becoming the dance show's host at the old WFIL studios in Philadelphia. The tribute will include snippets from other Clark shows, which ranged from TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes to the American Music Awards."Dick Clark was and is the variety-TV producer who best had his finger on popular taste," said Ehrlich, a veteran of scores of music shows, including Philadelphia's Live 8 last summer. Manilow and Bruce Sussman added lyrics to the instrumental "Bandstand Boogie" in 1975, and Clark soon adopted that version for the show. Manilow is Emmy-nominated for best individual performance in a variety or music program for his PBS special, Music and Passion. (Philadelphia Inquirer, 7/24/2006)
