  • Copacabana for Harpenden Light Operatic Society - The love story of Lola and Tony is at the heart of the next production by Harpenden Light Operatic Society (HLOS) at the Public Halls next week. HLOS are performing Barry Manilow’s Copacabana from next Monday, March 18, until Saturday, March 23. A modern show which is unashamedly over the top in terms of musical numbers and costumes, the story follows Stephen, a young inspiring songwriter, as he composes what he hopes will become a hit musical. He creates a story around ambitious young singer Lola de Mar with whom Tony Forte, who is aiming to make it as a songwriter, falls in love as he is tending the bar at the famous Copacabana Nightclub. The Barry Manilow hit is now a full-scale, Broadway-style musical fantasy. It is being directed for HLOS by Sally Davies with Isobel Handley as musical director. • Manilow back on Broadway with grandMA - Multi Grammy Award-winner Barry Manilow returns to Broadway for the first time in more than two decades and this time he's accompanied by grandMA2 consoles. Bandit Lites supplied the grandMA2 ultra-light consoles to the St. James Theatre for the entertainer's limited-run engagement featuring a catalogue of his hits. Production designer Seth Jackson began using grandMA2 consoles during the programming process. "We did a lot of the programming while the band was on the road, then we had a lot of stuff to re-program and no window to do it all at once," he recalls. "So we did most of the programming with a MA onPC command wing in California during rehearsals. Then we took the MA onPC command wing to New York to do a lot of ESP programming. It was a massive amount of work, and with the MA onPC command wing, it was like having a real grandMA2." Once settled into the St. James Theatre Jackson began to use a pair of grandMA2 ultra-light consoles to control more than 70 lights, most of them moving heads. The desks also controlled a front of house truss with conventional fixtures. Jackson runs a pair of d3 media servers on Art-Net through the consoles as well. "It's very helpful to have the grandMA2 for that purpose. They run seamlessly." When Manilow finishes his New York engagement his show will revert to a touring model, Jackson reports. But for now, "the grandMA2 ultra-light are rockin' away" on Broadway, he says. Jackson programmed with his two associate designers, Nathan W. Scheuer and Brent Sandrock. The lighting director for the tour is Jason Workman. (Lighting & Sound Online, 28 Feb 2013)

  • Everyone Needs a Little Harmony in Their Life - Back in 1997, I drove down to the La Jolla Playhouse to see the world premiere of a new musical called Harmony, which hoped one day to make it to Broadway. It was based on a real-life troupe, the Comedian Harmonists, who were a mixed-religion group (though mostly Jewish) of comics and "close harmony" singers in pre-war Germany of the late-20s and early 1930s ... Making it all the more intriguing was that the score of the show was written by, of all people, Barry Manilow, with the book and lyrics by his writing partner Bruce Sussman ... The musical Harmony was quite good. In fact, the first act was absolutely wonderful. There were some issues in the second act that wasn't as cohesive, though it was still enjoyable. The cast was strong, as well. I remember being particularly pleased to find when I opened the program that one of the female leads was played by Rebecca Luker. Danny Burstein was nominated just last year for a Tony Award in a revival of Follies. Casey Nicholaw became a Tony-nominated choreographer for Monty Python's Spamalot and then won a Tony for co-directing Book of Mormon. But what stood out most was how good the score was. If you heard an album of Barry Manilow pop music, there's a reasonable chance you could pick it out as "Hey, that's Barry Manilow." If you heard the score of Harmony, it's not likely you would have. It -- and Bruce Sussman's lyrics -- were wonderful. Manilow [did] record an album with songs from his two musicals (Harmony and Copacabana), and he does now often perform one of the songs from Harmony in his concerts, as well, a number titled "Every Single Day" ... It fits the moment in the show so perfectly that my recollection at the time of first hearing it in San Diego [was] that it stood out as a love song that was absolutely right for the character and what he needed to say right then. If you like Barry Manilow, but have never heard "Every Single Day," I think you'll love this. If you're not a Barry Manilow fan, put aside the big arrangement as much as you can and listen to it as the song it is from a Broadway musical... (Huffington Post, 2/25/2013)

  • Connor gets Going as he ditches Mozart for Manilow - A 20-year-old Glasgow University student is swapping classical piano for camp musical theatre as he takes the lead role in Copacabana at the King's Theatre. Connor Going is donning the flamboyant costumes of Barry Manilow's character, Tony. The pop tunes about a showgirl called Lola are far removed from the demanding chords the third year student of music and philosophy had to master to pass his Grade 8 piano exam last summer. "It has been quite a contrast in styles," admits Connor. "A lot of my training was Beethoven and Mozart, and I have done a little bit of jazz before, but nothing quite as modern as this. Barry Manilow gets a bit of mixed press, but I really enjoyed working on the music." Connor was cast as the leading man in the production despite this being his debut appearance with the Paisley Musical And Operatic Society, a 105-year-old am-dram company. The cast of 35 will put five months of rehearsals into action for six performances over five days, starting tonight. Barry Manilow's Copacabana, King's Theatre, until Saturday. • Record Producer Clive Davis Plans to Bring My Fair Lady Back to Broadway in 2014 - Grammy Award-winning record producer Clive Davis plans to produce a Broadway revival of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's Tony-wining My Fair Lady, aiming for a 2014 bow, according to the Los Angeles Times. "I always wanted to produce a Broadway show, and I've never done it," Davis told the Times. "I'm hopeful we will prepare and finalize everything this year to bring My Fair Lady next year to Broadway with a stellar cast. I don't want to jinx myself, but we're in discussions with two magnificent performers and a wonderful director to do that ... I was always hoping that the tradition of great musicals giving birth to songs that are part of the fabric of our culture would continue. But that has not happened. We've had hit Broadway shows, but the scores have not really been up to that golden-era tradition. So since that has not occurred, I really want to make sure that the greatest musical of all time -- which to me is My Fair Lady -- can show once again why a classic can be as meaningful half a century later as it was when it originally opened. I look forward to that." Five-time Grammy recipient Davis has worked with artists such as Whitney Houston, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, Barry Manilow, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Aretha Franklin, Christina Aguilera and Harry Connick, Jr., among others. • Manilow makes Broadway magic - Could it be magic at the Broadway box office? Turns out Barry Manilow can draw big crowds on the Main Stem -- which makes sense, given the overlap between the performer's fanbase and the primarily older-skewing demo of Broadway theatergoers. In Week 34 (Jan. 14-20) the first two performances of Manilow's Rialto concert gig, "Manilow on Broadway," pulled in a whopping $447,956, putting the show's per-performance numbers on par with those of Main Stem juggernauts like "Wicked" and "The Book of Mormon" and making it clear just why producers opted to extend the show's limited run by two weeks. • JHS Band Thanks Barry Manilow for Donation - The Joplin High School band Skyped an interview with Katie Couric this morning. The show featured Barry Manilow, and gave JHS musicians a chance to thank him for his generous gift last fall. The artist donated $300,000 worth of instruments to the music program. Today, the JHS band thanked Manilow with a giant banner and a solo performance of "Copacabana." "It was really cool. It was a lot of pressure because I had to play his song for him and everybody in the country knows that song. It was a really big honor to be able to do that for him," states Emily Watson, JHS Senior. • Joplin band thanks Barry Manilow for help during Katie Couric show - The Joplin High School band in a segment taped Tuesday morning for Katie Couric’s syndicated talk show got to thank singer Barry Manilow for his donation of instruments after the May 2011 tornado. Band members and Rick Castor, their director, were interviewed by Couric from the auditorium of the high school’s freshman-sophomore temporary campus via Skype, an online video-telephone program, as part of a segment for her show, "Katie." Manilow was the show’s featured guest.

After the band lost many of its instruments, as well as marching uniforms and sheet music, in the tornado, Manilow himself presented $300,000 worth of instruments to the band in October 2011 on behalf of the Manilow Music Project. The organization’s mission is to highlight the importance of school music programs, and to donate instruments and other materials to them. Castor said the donated instruments included six upright pianos, one grand piano, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, cornets, an oboe and a bassoon. He told Couric during the show that Manilow’s donation helped give each student an instrument, which in turn actually kept students in the band program.

Manilow said hearing of the band’s success was "very gratifying." "It’s good to see everybody, and I’m glad it worked," he told Couric during the segment.

Taylor Garrett, a senior in the band, plays both the B-flat clarinet and the smaller E-flat clarinet, the latter of which was donated by Manilow. "We actually didn’t have one before," she said. "It’s a really good addition. It sounds different; it’s a little higher. It brings a little more diversity to the woodwind section during concert season." Garrett said that in the months after the tornado, she and her classmates wondered whether they would have to take a year off from band, as they had lost so much. "In October, when he (Manilow) donated all the instruments, we kind of felt complete again," she said.

Senior AnnaLee Cope also plays a Manilow Music Project instrument that is new to the Joplin band: a contrabass clarinet. Before the tornado, she played a contra-alto clarinet and a bass clarinet. "This is actually a unique experience for me because we didn’t have one of these," she said. "I’m the first one to play it. I’m really excited."

Manilow’s donation was just one part of getting the band back on its feet after the tornado, Castor said. Hundreds of donations had poured in from across the country, from individual instruments to small cash donations. THE EPISODE OF "KATIE" featuring the Joplin High School band is tentatively scheduled to air on Wednesday, Jan. 23. (Joplin Globe, 1/15/2013)

  • Portsmouth Players Present Copacabana At The Kings - Her name was Lola. She was a showgirl... Barry Manilow's Grammy Award-winning song you never forgot is now brought to life onstage by Portsmouth Players! A love letter to the Technicolor musicals of the 1940s, Barry Manilow's Copacabana presents the story of Lola as told through the eyes of Stephen, a present day aspiring songwriter whose imagination takes him back to a time when music and passion were always in fashion. He dreams up Lola, fresh off the plane from Tulsa, who arrives in New York with show-biz aspirations. Tony (who looks amazingly like Stephen!) is a bartender/composer who falls in love with Lola and helps her become a Copa girl. While performing, Lola attracts the amorous attentions of Rico (who wears a diamond). Rico abducts Lola and takes her to his rival nightclub in Havana. Tony, with the help of his Copacabana friends, must now rescue Lola before... well, even if you know the song, there are still a few surprises! • Copacabana, Burnley Mechanics, to November 17th - When the songs from a show are still bubbling away in your brain the following day, you know the entertainment has been memorable. I’m still humming "Copacabana" from Saturday night but memorable isn’t the word to describe the spectacle being presented at Burnley Mechanics all this week. Barry Manilow’s musical "Copacabana" has hit town with a bang. I knew it was going to be a song and dance spectacular. But it is much more. From the opening number to the finale it is mesmerising in its magnificence. From a group of supposedly "amateur" song and dance men and women in Burnley Light Opera Society this is a truly professional performance. There were three professional male dancers in the mix and they impressed. But the whole company excel in this show penned by Manilow with lyrics by Bruce Sussman and directed and choreographed for Burnley by Anthony Williams. It is colourful, spectacular. "Copacabana" is set in the nightclub of the same name where virtually all the action takes place. Songwriter Stephen dreams of writing a song that will bring him fame and fortune - forgetting his lovely wife Samantha in the process. He devises a story set in the world famous Copacabana where country girl Lola La Mar arrives seeking fame and fortune and falls for barman Tony. The story continues with Lola being kidnapped and taken to Havana by mafia godfather Rico. Following a vibrant dance number set in the Havana nightclub, Lola is rescued from Rico’s clutches and realises her love for Tony, while Stephen realises that dreams are just dreams and his wife Sam is the real love of his life. This drama is combined with excellent music from an orchestra led by musical director Jonathan Chalker and the dance numbers from the "Copa" boys and girls, the dancers at the Copacabana nightclub, who strut their stuff in magnificent costumes, all spangle, fishnets and feathers. The dancers have to make so many costume changes, each seemingly more colourful than the last, that it is like a spectacular Broadway production. Throughout it all director Anthony has created a set that is simplicity personified, but the combination of colourful choreography and costume makes it sparkle. A masterstroke. It was over all too quickly for me but if you want to see it call the Mechanics box office on 664400. It runs until Saturday. (Pendle Today, 12 Nov 2012)

  • Fox's McCarver recalls when Barry Manilow rocked AT&T...? - "Barry! Barry! Barry!" The AT&T Park crowd was chanting after Giants pitcher Barry Zito got a base hit Wednesday night in Game 1 of the World Series in San Francisco. After Tim McCarver said that was not a sound Zito has been hearing too often around these parts, Fox broadcast partner Joe Buck laid one right in McCarver's wheelhouse: "They used to say it for somebody else around here," Buck said. To which McCarver replied: "When Barry Manilow was playing in a concert." Of course! You remember baseball's all-time home run king, Barry Manilow. "Or Barry Bonds," Buck teased... • Barry Manilow Set For Charity Performance at McCallum Theatre - Real estate expert Brad Schmett has today announced that real estate in Palm Desert and the surrounding desert cities will get a boost this holiday season from world-famous singer Barry Manilow at the McCallum Theatre. Local Palm Springs resident and world-class music performer Barry Manilow will be performing a five night concert series at the McCallum Theatre during the coming December to benefit charity. Following his wildly successful December 2009 "A Gift of Love" concert series at the same venue, "A Gift of Love II" will be offered December 11-12 and December 14-16 to raise funds for 27 local charities each evening. Having raised nearly half a million dollars for his home-based Coachella Valley charities with the first concert series, it is highly anticipated that Manilow will meet or exceed that goal this year. Schmett said today that "The local real estate community is both grateful and excited to have a performer of Manilow's caliber living in our midst." Manilow’s dedication and generosity to local charities is legendary. One of the top adult contemporary musical artists of all-time, with an amazing 48 career hits making the Billboard’s top 40, Manilow also produces and arranges his own music. Over his career he has released more than 40 best-selling albums and performed countless times for the benefit of favorite charities. Schmett is proud that the Coachella Valley is known for its generosity as much as for its star-studded population of gifted entertainers. Although he is accustomed to working with celebrities, many of whom have purchased luxury homes in Palm Desert, he is always delighted on a personal level when a performer in Manilow's league takes the time to give back to the local community in this way. Just a few of the local charities who will benefit include Animal Samaritans, the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, College of the Desert, the Mizell Senior Center, and the Desert AIDS Project. All of them in good company, they are only a sampling of the beneficiaries of the Manilow largesse. To find out more about the McCallum Theatre go to http://www.McCallumTheatre.com. • Copacabana to Open in Fort Lauderdale - "Her name was Lola... She was a showgirl..." That's the first line of the hit Barry Manilow song about iconic New York City nightclub Copacabana, which saw the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Lena Horne, Desi Arnaz, and Sam Cooke (to name just a few) performing on its stage. The sultry, tropical-themed nightclub made it seem as if a swinging Havana showplace had been set down in the middle of Manhattan. The Copa was a star itself, with many movies, including Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and Carlito's Way, using the club as a setting. The club, established in the early 1940s, remained open in some form or another for more than 50 years before finally closing down. Copacabana New York reopened in 2011 in Times Square by new owners, who purchased the rights to the name. Now, the Copacabana is opening another location on Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, at the former Laffing Matterz space. The Copa is known for its live musical acts. The supperclub and lounge will feature live music, acts, and the famous Copa girls. The Fort Lauderdale menu has not yet been released, but the New York club offers a prix fixe menu (with show) for $45. A bar menu is also available to go with the club's specialty cocktails with names like the tango, mambo, conga, and lambada. The Copacabana Fort Lauderdale is scheduled to open in September. We're hoping it will revive the days when "music and passion were always the fashion..." (New Times [Broward Palm Beach], 8/14/2012)

  • BG Singers Collect New, Gently Used Musical Instruments - Instruments, as well as cash donations, will benefit the Manilow Music Project. Donations will be accepted through the end of the year. The Buffalo Grove Park District’s BG Singers are collecting new or gently used musical instruments and monetary donations to support the Manilow Music Project. Founded by Barry Manilow, the charity provides musical instruments to schools where music programs have been cut due to lack of funding. "I heard about the Manilow Project on Barry Manilow’s recent visit to Chicago," said BG Singers Community Outreach Coordinator Cathy Novak. "Music has been so very important in my life and the lives of all of my family and friends. I knew that the BG Singers would want to get involved to help bring music and music education into the lives of children." To date, the BG Singers have donated six instruments and collected $1,500 to purchase 15 more instruments to be distributed to schools in Chicago, and they are now looking to the local community to further help support this project. Through the end of the year, instruments and monetary donations can be dropped off during office hours at the Alcott Center or at the Buffalo Grove Village Hall. Donations will also be accepted at the BG Singers 20th anniversary concert, "Platinum," at Stevenson High School. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 and 3 p.m. Sept. 9.
