  • TODAY says farewell (for now) to mommy-to-be Jenna Wolfe - As TODAY’s Jenna Wolfe prepares for maternity leave, her co-anchors made sure she was sent off with plenty of love, advice and a tiny TODAY-branded onesie. Many members of the TODAY team said that Wolfe’s energy and humor will help her as she begins her new role as a parent. "She has so much fun, so much exuberance, and I think any little baby would be so lucky to be in her presence," said TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie. Matt Lauer agreed. "The sense of humor that she shows around here on a daily basis is like one of the greatest traits you can have when it comes to being a mother," he said. Hoda Kotb said Wolfe's baby will be "laughing from the time that child comes out of the womb." It wouldn’t be a proper send-off without a good celebrity sighting. Barry Manilow, one of Wolfe’s favorite musicians, made a cameo appearance in her good luck video. "Jenna," he said, "take care of our littlest fan." (Today.com, 8/18/2013)

  • Youngsters capture magic of Manilow - Music and passion are in fashion in Worcester as talented youngsters offer invitations to a big night at the Copacabana. It’s a fast-moving and glamorous musical by the prolific and popular Barry Manilow, set mainly in the post-war New York nightclub of the title. It brings out the strength in depth of the Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section, known as WODYS, which has discovered some exceptional principals here. Dan Hooper leads with a nicely judged blend of naivete and charm as would-be 1980s singer-songwriter Stephen, who morphs into would-be singer-songwriter Tony in the Copacabana club in New York, 1947. Fresh off the train steps Molly Holder as Lola la Mar, singing beautifully and seamlessly turning from starry-eyed farm hand to showgirl. She also looks like Stephen's wife, Samantha, as the plot is an extended dream sequence brought about by him working on what will become his best-known song. Lola joins crusty but kind club owner Sam Silver and big-hearted cigarette girl Gladys, a very funny double act by Greg Bytheway and Cerys Jones, whose Copa Girl is a highlight. Thanks to lovestruck Tony, Lola gets her big chance but she’s kidnapped by Italian gangster Rico, a menacing Matthew Emeny, who delivers a powerfully operatic Bolera D’Amore, and taken to his Tropicana club in Havana. He is looking to replace fading star Conchita, played by Olivia Jones, another fine singer, but hasn’t reckoned on some unlikely heroes. An excellent band backs a cast of 55 children of all ages, well choreographed in some big dance scenes. They all seem like they’re having a great time and their enthusiasm is infectious so if you’re looking for a classy night out, put on your tuxedo and head for Copacabana. It runs until Saturday at the Swan Theatre and to book tickets, visit worcesterlive.co.uk. (Worcester News, 31 July 2013)

  • Barry Manilow Helps Honor KC and the Sunshine Band with Star on Palm Springs Walk of Stars - KC and the Sunshine Band were in Palm Springs, California, on Saturday for the unveiling of their very own star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. On hand to honor the famed disco group and its lead singer, Harry Wayne Casey, was Palm Springs resident and fellow pop legend Barry Manilow. The Desert Sun reports that while introducing Casey, Manilow led attendees in a heartfelt sing-along of the band’s chart-topping hit "Shake Your Booty." In his speech accepting the honor, which he posted on the KC and the Sunshine Band Facebook page, Casey thanked his "dear friend" Manilow for participating in the event, while also extending his gratitude to his late parents, his band mates, his group’s crew, his managers and his agent, among others. The singer saved perhaps his most heartfelt words for his fans who made it out to the ceremony. "To my fans who came out today in this desert heat along with everyone else, you too are amazing and I love you with all of my heart," he said. "Thank you for supporting us over the past 40 years and allowing me to make my dreams come true...I hope that through my music I have given you as many wonderful memories as you have given me." • Tobin Endowment donation helps bring the gift of music to the San Antonio Independent School District - On the eve of legendary singer-songwriter Barry Manilow’s show at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, the Tobin Endowment announced a $10,000 grant to the San Antonio Independent School District Foundation to purchase musical instruments for the District. Inspired by Barry Manilow’s instrument drive for the SAISD, the Tobin Endowment’s donation will go directly to the SAISD’s Fine Arts Department, administered by Dr. John May, Executive Director of Fine Arts.

Manilow kicked off the SAISD musical instrument drive by donating a new Yamaha piano to the SAISD and encouraging the public to donate new or gently used instruments in exchange for two free tickets to his June 29th concert. "The new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is in the heart of the SAISD," said Bruce Bugg, Chairman and Trustee of the Tobin Endowment and Chairman of the Bexar County Performing Arts Center Board of Directors. "Education is a major component of the Tobin Center, a place where our school children can receive specialized education opportunities and exposure to extraordinary performances. Mr. Manilow’s passionate commitment to music education is inspiring, and we are pleased to make this donation at a time when the San Antonio public is participating in his musical instrument drive."

SAISD Foundation Chair Carri Baker Wells noted the importance of arts and music education with regard to improving student achievement. "We know from our data that SAISD students involved in the arts have higher test scores and graduation rates. As 93% of our students are economically disadvantaged, we are grateful to the community for donating gently-used instruments and to The Tobin Endowment for funding new ones. Student interest in the arts is on the rise, and we will be ready to offer them new instruments made possible by our community partners and the Manilow Music Project." • Wayne Alan Wilcox, Tony Yazbeck & Leigh Ann Larkin to Lead Barry Manilow's HARMONY at Alliance Theatre in September! - Atlanta's Tony Award winning ALLIANCE THEATRE is pleased to announce the cast and creative team behind its upcoming production, HARMONY - A NEW MUSICAL, with music by Barry Manilow and book & lyrics by Bruce Sussman. HARMONY tells the true story of The Comedian Harmonists, a close harmony ensemble of six young men in 1930s Germany, who took the world by storm until their religious composition - a mixture of Jews and Gentiles - put them on a collision course with history. HARMONY is a co-production with Center Theatre Group.

HARMONY is directed by Drama Desk Award nominee Tony Speciale (Classic Stage Company: Unnatural Acts, A Midsummer Night's Dream). "HARMONY is about a group of young men who came together during a terrifying time in history to create something exquisite. Their heartbreaking and untold story was the impetus for Barry and Bruce to write HARMONY, and it's what compelled me to work on this important project," said Speciale. "Together the authors have woven an intricate and epic piece of music theatre about memory, collaboration, hope, brotherhood, survival and redemption. HARMONY is a celebration of these six brilliant men and an inspiring reminder of the human capacity to make great art, even in our darkest hours."

When Manilow and Sussman began working on HARMONY, Roman "Rabbi" Cykowski was the only surviving member of The Comedian Harmonists, and was able to talk with them about his life and experiences with the group before passing away in 1998. His memories, plus available historical information, provide the basis for the musical. The character of Rabbi, who also acts as narrator for the story, will be played by Wayne Alan Wilcox. Wilcox's Broadway credits include Chaplin andThe Normal Heart. Wilcox also playEd Gordon in the film version of Rent and had a recurring role on the popular TV series The Gilmore Girls. Also joining the cast in principal roles - Tony Yazbeck (Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Gypsy) as Harry; Douglas Williams as Bobby; Chris Dwan (Off-Broadway:The Old Boy, Peter & I) as Erich; Will Taylor (A Chorus Line) as Chopin; Will Blum (The Book of Mormon) as Lesh; Leigh Ann Larkin (A Little Night Music, Gypsy) as Mary; and Hannah Corneau as Ruth.

The ensemble for HARMONY consists of eleven actors who must play over thirty roles including historical figures like Marlene Dietrich, Albert Einstein, and Richard Strauss - all of whom the Comedian Harmonists really knew. Members of the ensemble include Shayne Kennon, Patrick O'Neill, Greg Kamp, Charles Osborne, Bryan Thomas Hunt, Chad Lindsey, Brandon O'Dell, Lauren Elaine Taylor, Kim Sava, Lindsay Moore, and Liberty Cogen. "We are both thrilled by the stunningly talented cast and design team who will be joining us for this production of HARMONY," said creators Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman. "Given Tony Speciale's fresh and blazingly theatrical vision for the piece, we now have every reason to believe this will be the HARMONY we've always hoped to see."

Members of the HARMONY creative team include Set & Costume Designer Tobin Ost (Jekyll & Hyde Revival, Newsies The Musical); Projection Designer Darrel Maloney (American Idiot); LX Designer Jeff Croiter (Jekyll & Hyde Revival, The Anarchist), winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Lighting Design of a Play for his work on Peter and the Starcatcher; and Choreographer JoAnn M. • Barry Manilow At the Orpheum Caps Off A Successful Sioux City Events Season - Get your tickets, Mr. Barry Manilow is in the house. Folks across Siouxland rushed to the Orpheum Friday night to see the big man himself. "Me and him, like I said, we're committed; he just doesn't know it yet," said fan Jessica Ruthart of Lehigh, Iowa. "I've seen him about ten times, maybe more!" added Deb Tjelta of Ankeny. Manilow's show ended another successful Sioux City events season. Over the fiscal year, a quarter of a million people visited the Tyson Events Center in sold out shows like Luke Bryan and Eric Church earning the Tyson some top honors. With other event centers moving into the area, like the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, Sioux City plans to still stay competitive with some good shows this upcoming season. "I think with even competition with Omaha and even Sioux Falls, I really think they've brought in some really great acts all across the board," said Shelley Erwin of Sioux City. Acts just like Mr. Manilow that could keep people coming back next season. (KCAU-TV, 6/21/2013)

  • Sioux City Community Schools have a music instrument drive - The school district is hosting a Music Instrument Drive. The Tyson Event Center Box Office has served as a drop off site for the instruments during the drive which began June 11th. Donors get 2 free tickets to Barry Manilow's concert, in Sioux City, on Friday night. Manilow himself helped to kick off the Instrument Drive by donating a brand new Yamaha Piano. As a former music instructor, Superintendent Paul Gausman says he looks forward to the opportunities these instruments will provide to the students. "When we have a drive like this one, what this does is it gets an instrument into the hands of a student who otherwise could not afford one, and I think that's a real benefit for our families in Sioux City. This increases our inventory of instruments, so that fewer students would need to bring their own from home," said Dr. Paul Gausman, Superintendent of the Sioux City Community School District. Box Office officials say nearly 30 instruments have already been collected. The Tyson will continue to collect used instruments through June 21st. (KTIV, 6/18/2013)

  • Alliance Theatre Taste of the Season - This year, the Alliance Theatre’s "Taste of the Season" event allowed us to sample the flavors of all the theatrical goodies that will be on stage at the Woodruff Arts Center between September 2013 and May 2014. The seasonal smorgasbord they’ve slated up includes a hearty mix of dramas, comedies and musicals. With nearly a dozen shows to choose from throughout the 2013-2014 run, you’re sure find something to please any palate.

The 2013 season opens on Sept. 6 with "Harmony," a new musical composed by Barry Manilow making its first emergence on stage after a longtime hiatus. Manilow and "Harmony" lyricist Bruce Sussman chose the Alliance specifically as the site of the revival of their Broadway-worthy brainchild.

The heartrending musical based on true historical events follows the story of the Comedian Harmonists, a singing sextet in pre-WWII Germany. The wildly popular but long forgotten harmony ensemble consisted of men from all different creeds and social classes. Their diverse religious composition, however, began to strike a dissonant chord with the German regime as the Nazis gained political influence...

  • WODYS help Jean's charity - Dancers from Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society’s Youth Section (WODYS) took time out from rehearsals for their forthcoming show Copacabana to visit youngsters at the city charity which they will be raising money for when they stage their production in the summer. Jean Wilson set up New Hope, a holiday and Saturday club to help give families with disabled children respite. The charity, in Wells Road, Ronkswood, Worcester, supports 50 families from all over Worcestershire and as far afield as Stratford-upon-Avon, and, as a result of its success, hopes to expand and open premises in Droitwich. Their cause has been taken up by WODYS as one of its members has a disabled brother and the family is being supported by New Hope. At New Hope, work is underway to install a £3,000-£4,000 multi-sensory area and fit it with padding and soft play equipment at a cost of about £1,000. It is the money for the play equipment which WODYS are hoping to raise with raffles during the six performances of Barry Manilow's Copacabana at Worcester’s Swan Theatre from Tuesday, July 30, to Saturday, August 3. David Humphries, WODYS chairman and producer of Copacabana, said: "We are only too pleased to have New Hope as WODYS charity this year, more especially as we have one of our members’ family involved with the organisation." Copacabana is the saga of Lola and Tony, and their tale of love and romance on the way to stardom, with original songs created by Barry Manilow, dazzling costumes and sensational choreography. It is told by a cast of 60 WODYS eight to 18-year-olds whose previous shows have usually sold out and tickets, which can be obtained from Worcester’s Huntingdon Hall box office on 01905 611427, are already going well. • On a music mission: Q&A with Nataly Dawn ... Nataly's response on working with Barry Manilow on his album Fifteen Minutes, singing the song "Letter From a Fan": It was a really memorable experience; he was a super, super cool, really nice, warm, friendly dude. It was a very Kafka-esque experience, where you kind of walk into a world and expect it to be a certain way and then it’s just really not what you expected. This studio we were recording in was at a guy’s house and you had to first walk through this really nice mansion, and then a kiddie pool and a bunch of toys all over the place, and you finally got to the very back and there was this tiny studio where Barry Manilow was smoking an electronic cigarette, and telling you how he wanted you to "feel the role." It was very much like being hired for theater as opposed to being hired to sing as I would normally sing. So he coached me on every line and it was really funny actually. And I think he got what he wanted -- I did a pretty good job embodying the crazy, stalker fan. (Oregon Music News, 5/1/2013)

  • Sandy Creek HS presents 'Copacabana' - Sandy Creek High School’s Choral Department presents Barry Manilow’s stage musical "Copacabana" on April 18-21 at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone. Show times are 7 p.m. on April 18, 19, and 20. A matinee at 2 p.m. will be presented on Sunday, April 21. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the SCHS front office for $7 or at the door for $10. "Copacabana," written by Barry Manilow, Jack Sussman, and Bruce Feldman, is described by MTI International as "a love letter to the Technicolor musicals of the 1940s." The story, based on Manilow’s popular song, "Copacabana," is told from the point of view of Stephen, an aspiring songwriter who composes a musical set in 1947 and starring Lola Lamarr, a young singer who follows her dreams of stardom and moves to New York City from Tulsa. Lola meets Tony, a bartender at the famed "Copacabana" nightclub, who is instantly smitten by Lola’s beauty and talent. Lola is hired as a show girl at the "Copa," where Tony admires her while attempting to pursue his own dream of performing on stage. The story intensifies when club patron and gangster Rico sees Lola dancing on stage and is captivated by her performance. He later kidnaps her and takes her to Havana, Cuba, to star in the show at his night club there. Once Tony learns what has happened, he sets off for Cuba to rescue Lola. The plot takes a number of turns from there, eventually turning back to the young songwriter Stephen. "Copacabana" is a traditional musical with drama, colorful dance numbers, and the hit music of Barry Manilow. Originally developed as a TV film, the stage musical premiered in Great Britain in 1994 and was later performed in the U.S. The 1985 movie was nominated for two Emmy Awards. • Barry Manilow's Harmony Will Be Part of 2013-14 Alliance Season in Atlanta - Atlanta's Alliance Theatre, recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award, will produce the new works Harmony – A New Musical, written by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, as part of its 45th season. "The plays of the 2013-14 season live in times and places of change," said artistic director Susan V. Booth in a statement. The musical will make its debut in Atlanta at the Alliance Theatre in the fall of 2013 before coming to the Ahmanson (March 12, 2014 to April 13, 2014). The staging, directed by Tony Speciale, is a co-production between the Alliance and CTG. The show is inspired by the real-life story of the Comedian Harmonists, a group of young singers who rose to fame in Germany before World War II. An earlier version of the musical ran at the La Jolla Playhouse in 1997. Michael Ritchie, artistic director of CTG, said in an interview that he had followed the development of the musical since 1997. "It's a show I've been interested in for a long time," he said. Neel Keller, the current associate artistic director at CTG, had worked at La Jolla in a similar capacity when "Harmony" debuted there. Ritchie said that he and Keller had talked about the musical a number of times over the years. When the Alliance decided to mount the show, Ritchie said CTG entered conversations with Manilow and Sussman about a co-production. (Los Angeles Times, 3/13/2013)
