  • BG Singers to Present Donation Friday on Windy City Live - Members of the BG Singers will appear on Windy City LIVE Friday morning to present donated musical instruments to Barry Manilow’s Health and Hope Fund, which supplies instruments to school music programs. Manilow will be the show’s featured guest. The donation is part of the choir’s 2012 charitable program, which has benefitted such organizations as the American Cancer Society and in 2011 helped send musical instruments to Guatemala through the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club. "It’s part of being what I like to call 'the choir that cares,'" said BG Singers conductor Linda Rosen. This year’s program came together in just the last week. The BG Singers collected $1,000 by passing around an envelope at Tuesday’s rehearsal, which was attended by 68 singers. They also received a $500 donation through the Larry Berkowitz Fine Arts Fund, established by the choir in memory of one of its original members. The choir partnered with Buffalo Grove’s Sam Ash Music to purchase 15 new instruments with the money. Those instruments, along with the secondhand ones collected by choir members, will benefit students at two inner-city schools, Rosen said. (Buffalo Grove Patch, 7/12/2012)

  • Clay Aiken calls Carmel's Palladium 'incredible' - After singer-songwriter Clay Aiken's sound check in Carmel's Palladium on Saturday afternoon, the "American Idol" alum had nothing but good things to say about the venue and his reason for stopping there. Aiken, who was in town to perform Barry Manilow's hit "Even Now" during the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame gala, described the acoustics in the Carmel concert hall as "incredible." About 1,000 attended the gala show, which was set around the inaugural class of artists (Manilow, Cole Porter and Oscar-winning songwriting duo Alan and Marilyn Bergman) who were inducted into the Hall of Fame for their contributions to the songbook -- popular music from Broadway and Hollywood musicals prevalent from the 1920s to the 1960s. As for Saturday's show, Aiken, who is well-known for his performances on "American Idol" and recently appeared on "Celebrity Apprentice," said he was honored to be asked to sing one of Manilow's tunes, especially since he has regularly been compared to the elder crooner. "I've had comparisons drawn to him for years, and I've always said, 'If I can have a career that lasts a third as long as Barry's career has lasted, I'll be happy,' " said Aiken, who added that he had Manilow's hairstyle for a while, too. Manilow, who performed three songs himself, including his smash "Copacabana," on Saturday, was flattered. "He's a wonderful singer," said Manilow, who jokingly added that in 30 years, Aiken would look like him. (The Indy Star, 6/19/2012)

Honestly, I was absolutely shocked when they named me the winner." • Feinstein to honor legends of American music - You may not know it, but Carmel is home to the Great American Songbook, a collection of music and memorabilia from American musical history. Director Michael Feinstein's goal is not only to preserve the past, but also to make it relevant in the future. Feinstein will tell you that he's not just a performer. He considers himself a student of what he calls great American music - and musicians. "I'm always trying to find way to being consciousness to, awareness to, the Great American Songbook, so we established these awards to perpetuate and continue the music, to bring it to new generations," Feinstein said. To do that, he's adding a hall of fame, with a Hoosier great in the inaugural class. "An obvious choice for the Legend Award seems to be Cole Porter, because he was from Indiana and he was one of the true icons of American popular songs," Feinstein said. Porter wrote dozens of songs influencing stage and screen for decades. He helped keep musicals popular during the mid-1900s, paving the way for other writers, like Alan and Marilyn Bergman, who wrote songs made popular by singers like Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand. The third musician to be honored next month is Barry Manilow, who Feinstein calls an all-around star. "He writes incredible songs that have become standards and he also is an amazing performer and perpetuates his own music and American popular songs," he said. To Feinstein, it is perpetuating those songs that is the point. "I think it really makes a difference in our world and in personal happiness to have something as powerful as music, especially this classic music," he said. The Great American Songbook Hall of Fame dinner and performance is June 16 at The Palladium in Carmel. After that, The Palladium will display the awards in the south lobby of the building. Eventually, they hope to build a Great American Songbook Hall of Fame and Museum on the campus of the Center for the Performing Arts. (WTHR [Indiana], 5/19/2012)

  • They Wrote the Songs that Got Them in the Feinstein Foundation’s Hall of Fame - Pop icon Barry Manilow has written a few songs that could make the whole world sing. In concert, Manilow also sings the songs of The Great American Songbook, making him a favorite of Carmel’s Michael Feinstein Foundation, which is aimed at preserving the popular tunes of Broadway and Hollywood musicals of the 1920s to 1960s. So, it’s fitting that Manilow is among the first group to be inducted into the new Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Manilow, the Oscar-winning songwriting duo Alan and Marilyn Bergman, and Hoosier Cole Porter make up the 2012 class, announced this week. They will be honored June 16 during The Center for the Performing Arts’ season finale, "Encore Celebration Gala." The fundraising event will feature a cocktail reception and a performance from Feinstein, who will honor the music of inductees. Afterward, there will be a post-concert dinner of gourmet foods and cocktails and also a few after parties in club-like settings on the Center’s campus. The new Songbook Hall of Fame was inspired by visits to Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, said Doris Anne Sadler, Executive Director of The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative. "The Hall of Fame is an ongoing project we expect, over the years, to expand and grow and become a very important part of Indiana culture and be an attraction for all of the country, like the other two Halls of Fame are," she said. As for performances connected to June’s event, plans for the show aren’t set in stone ... The Center is currently accepting table reservations -- a table of 10 is $5,000 and a corporate table is $7,500. • Broken Arrow native Russ McKinnon tour drummer for Barry Manilow - Russ McKinnon left Oklahoma as a young musician 30 years ago this week. He returned as a drummer for Barry Manilow on Friday night at the BOK Center. Born and raised in Broken Arrow, McKinnon graduated from Broken Arrow High School in 1977. McKinnon moved to California after attending the University of Tulsa and the University of North Texas. He built a name for himself through years as a professional musician and was invited to tour in Barry Manilow's band more than 10 years ago. Music has always played a role in McKinnon's life. His mother was a choral music teacher at Broken Arrow Public Schools, and he taught percussion for Union and Broken Arrow. For McKinnon, it's hard seeing schools struggle to keep arts programs. "Musicians such as myself are so grateful for the music education that we had in public schools," he said. "We want to see that continue." He emphasized how important it is for school systems to keep instrumental and choral music. "It's so majorly important to people," McKinnon said. "It will change their lives. It definitely changed mine. " McKinnon included some of his band directors from junior high, high school and college on his guest list Friday night. "They'll be sitting in the VIP section," he said. McKinnon and the band are just coming off a seven-year run in Las Vegas, and they recently played in Dublin, London and other U.K. cities. He makes it back to Tulsa only about once a year but said his trips home are very relaxing. "It's always a very grounding experience for me," he said. McKinnon feels proud to know that big-name musicians are coming through Tulsa, and he said the BOK Center and the Tulsa community make it happen. "That new BOK Center has really put you guys on the map, as far as all the big agents knowing about it," he said. "It just shows how resilient the Tulsa economy has been." (Tulsa World, 6/9/2012)

  • Sophie's (Concert) Choice: Barry Manilow (at the DCU Center), Sept. 14 - Barry Manilow might not actually write the songs that make the whole world sing, but he certainly performs the songs that made the whole crowd sing-along, including "Daybreak," "Mandy," "Can't Smile Without You," "I Made It Through the Rain," "Ready to Take a Chance Again," "Weekend in New England," and, yes, "Copacabana (At the Copa)." Whether you think Manilow is simply a guilty pleasure or a middle-of-the-road musical messiah, he is a funny, personable, all-around entertainer who knows how to belt out a tune, push all the right buttons and give one heck of the show in the bargain. • Acting with passion at the Copacabana - Copacabana, Youth Onstage, The Old Rep. For their tenth anniversary production, Youth Onstage chose Barry Manilow's musical about an aspiring young song writer who falls for a wannabe night club star – and the young cast made a big impression ... They delighted the audience with the quality of their singing and dancing, Trudi Ford's choreography lighting up the stage at times. Dominic Harris gave a remarkable performance as Stephen. Hannah Brook was excellent as Lola, James Hudson proved to be a commanding figure as Italian gangster Rico – a role he stepped into just three weeks previously – and Eleanor Snowdon performed well as the crook's ageing girlfriend, Conchita Alvarez. Costumes were also impressive in this lively show directed by Deb Brook. (This is Tamworth, 18 May 2012)

  • Q&A with the Lyons Star Kate Jennings Grant - Question: What show recently impressed you? Answer: I have been completely obsessed with Barry Manilow since I was five years old — he is the reason I started performing and playing the piano — and on my night off from The Lyons I got to see him perform at Radio City Music Hall! He sounded absolutely amazing, as always. Not only does he hit every note, he delivers a lyric as if it's the first time he's sung it...and he's performed those songs for decades! He has an incredible connection with his fans, and is a huge inspiration to me. (Playbill.com, 5/12/2012)

  • Barry Manilow Lyricist Marty Panzer Offers Proof That a Wonderful Life Can Begin at 18 - Google "Marty Panzer" and you'll be convinced that he was born in the CBS Mailroom at the age of 18, and he may well may have been, in the sense that the CBS Mailroom was where he began to first feel alive. Up 'til then Marty had no identity, felt that he had no talents, no direction, no ambition, and had no idea what he was going to do with his life. A family friend told Marty to get a job in the CBS Mailroom and that he would find his path in life there. And he did.

Marty has a much older brother who was married by the time Marty was six, which is when his mother became a widow. "It was just Mom and I in Williamsburg." He truly loved his mother, who "gave me nothing but love and affection," and credits her with making him a loving, positive, optimistic person. He wrote his first hit about her -- "I Am Your Child" -- a song which was adopted by Rob Reiner to help build his I Am A Child Foundation.

During his first day in the mailroom Marty noticed a familiar face. It belonged to Barry Manilow, who had graduated from Brooklyn's Eastern District High School -- Marty's Alma Mater -- the previous year and had been toiling in the CBS mailroom for six months. Manilow had enough talent, direction and ambition to sustain a battalion and he and Marty, who had known each other casually before, gradually became close friends. Marty established his career at CBS-TV as Manager of Air Control on-Air Operations where he was involved in setting up the format for the first Super Bowl, the first lunar landing and countless news and sports events. "I expected to stay at CBS for the rest of my life," and then Barry, who'd established himself musically, asked Marty to help him write a commercial jingle on spec for Cup-a-Soup. It was a success and started Marty on a commercial career with Barry.

Thanks to Barry, Marty discovered he did have talent for writing lyrics and in the ensuing 48 years he has written about 100 lyrics for Manilow tunes, many of them major hits, plus over 100 lyrics for Disney Songs, and a variety of songs with other people like Don Grady, of "My Three Sons." Barry and Marty are still best friends and according to Marty "nothing is better than working with your best friend." Here's how they work. Marty write lyrics for a year and shows them all to Barry when they get together. Barry prefers to see the lyrics first. He writes the music after he decides which lyrics work for him.

Living in LaLa Land among the musicrati has given Marty a slew of stories well worth re-telling, which Marty will be raconteur-ing: wonderfully hilarious, honest and touching stories about his musical and non-musical adventures with Kenny Rogers, Julio Iglesias, Michael Crawford, Dianne Schuur, et al., at the Triad Theater at 158 West 72nd in Manhattan on April 27 and April 28th at 7:30. This show is a Benefit for the Manilow Music Project.

Marty's favorite lyric? "All the Time," which is about feeling like an outsider, a feeling which everyone shares at least once in a lifetime.

All the time I thought there's only me
Crazy in a way that no one else could be
I can't believe that you were somewhere, too
Thinking all the time there's only you
All the time, all the wasted time
All the years waiting for a sign
To think I had it all
    All the time

  • Dick Clark Remembered By Barry Manilow, Bruce Sussman - Broadcast legend Dick Clark, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 82, got his big break in 1956, hosting "Bob Horn's Bandstand" -- a show that would later be renamed "American Bandstand." Clark was so at home on the show that he kept the theme song, written by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, as the hold music on his office's telephones long after it went off the air.

"We were all having lunch together and he needed to call his office for something," Sussman remembers. "When he called, they put him on hold, which made him laugh, and then suddenly he turned to me and said, 'Bruce, quick, listen to this.' He handed me the phone and the hold music was 'Bandstand Boogie,' the theme song Barry and I wrote for his show. It was such a sweet and adorable thing to do. That smile on his face as he watched me listen to the tune, that's how I will remember him."

Manilow similarly remembers Clark's kind spirit and enduring support. "This is a sad day," Manilow says. "He was a dear friend, supporting me and my music for all of my years in the business. A great businessman and a true gentleman. An inspiration. My heart is so heavy now."

"Above and beyond his being an icon in our industry with accomplishments beyond measure, he was first and foremost a real gentlemen, generous to a fault, and someone who never lost his infectious enthusiasm for the entertainment world and, especially, talented artists," Sussman added. "He was deeply loved and will be remembered."

  • Andrew Miller: Tributes paid to Knebworth 90 promoter - Tributes have been paid to a Shropshire-born music industry executive who helped raise millions of pounds for charities. Andrew Miller, who died on Thursday aged 65, brought together the likes of Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and Pink Floyd for the Knebworth 90 concert. The event raised millions for charities including the Brit School and Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy. It also helped fund the building of the Brit School in Croydon. Mr Miller, born in Shrewsbury, worked as a promoter for artists such as Meatloaf, Barry Manilow, Chris de Burgh and Captain Sensible. His links with the Nordoff Robbins music therapy charity date back to 1976. Miller "earned the gratitude of many" for his "tireless work" for the charity. Mr Miller leaves a wife and two daughters. • Andrew Miller 1946-2012 - Concert promoter Andrew Miller, who was also a founder of the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy fundraising committee, died peacefully in his sleep last Thursday, it has been confirmed. Miller began his career in the music business in the 1970s as an agent, before setting up his own live music company, Andrew Miller Promotions, in 1975, through which he promoted concerts for the likes of Supertramp, Gallagher & Lyle, Joan Armatrading, Meatloaf, Nana Mouskouri and Barry Manilow. His involvement with the British Nordoff Robbins charity began at around the same time, and he went on to co-found and then chair for 24 years a fund-raising committee which raised millions for the ground breaking music therapy organisation, and ensured its work was known, admired and supported by the entire UK music industry. Perhaps Miller’s best known fund-raising initiative was the Knebworth 90 concert in 1990. Paul McCartney, Status Quo, Genesis, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Tears For Fears, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and Cliff Richard and The Shadows all helped ensure it was a landmark event, which raised over £6 million, shared between Nordoff Robbins and The BRITS Trust, who were able to realise their plans to launch the BRIT School For Performing Arts because of the cash boost. Content recorded at the event continues to generate revenue for both charities. Andrew is survived by his wife Anna and his two daughters Faye and Emily. (The CMU Website, 22 February 2012)

  • Barry Manilow Concert at Resch Center Moved to June 15 - Barry Manilow's concert at the Resch Center has been pushed back a couple of months, from April 27 to Friday June 15 at 7:30 P.M. That's according to Barry Manilow's official web site and Oneida Casino Ticket Star Online, the ticketing web site of PMI Entertainment Group. Terry Charles of PMI Entertainment told Action 2 News Wednesday he is not able to confirm the change, though it appears on the two web sites. A reason for the change wasn't immediately available. However, Manilow.com has a statement from earlier this month that the singer is undergoing "intense physical therapy... after extensive muscular surgery in his hips" and that under the direction of his doctors he postponed four concerts last week at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Those are now scheduled to start April 30. Manilow.com shows he still has a concert scheduled in Milwaukee on April 28. (WBAY, 2/15/2012)

  • 2012 Chevrolet Silverado (and Twinkies) Survive Apocalypse in Super Bowl XLVI Ad - As several Chevy trucks emerge from the debris, one man asks, "Where's Dave?" "Dave drove a Ford," he's told. The men then share Twinkies, which also have survived the holocaust, in what apparently is a dubious cross-marketing effort. Twinkies maker Hostess sought bankruptcy protection in January; GM went through federally led bankruptcy protection in 2009. The ad crams in lots of surrealistic touches, including a dog, the Mayan calendar's doomsday prediction for 2012, and the Barry Manilow song "Looks Like We Made It," which has been described by The New York Times as a "triumphant ode to romantic failure." The Silverado "shows off how reliable it really is," said General Motors in a statement Friday about the Super Bowl ad, which closes with a Biblical rain of frogs on the truck. The 60-second commercial will air during the first quarter of Sunday's game. (Inside Line, 2/3/2012)
