  • Touching Emmy Tribute For Dick Clark - Broadcasting legend Dick Clark was honored at the 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Sunday night. Ryan Seacrest kicked off the tribute with a nod to "American Bandstand," the durable musical variety show that ran from 1952 to 1989. Clark, 80, hosted from 1957 onward, and featured a who's who of celebrated musicians on the show, from Madonna to the Beach Boys to Janet Jackson. The accolades continued with kind words from Clark's celeb pals. "Without 'Bandstand,' without Dick, there would be no 'American Idol,'" Simon Cowell said. Barry Manilow joked, "The first time you and I met was when I debuted 'Mandy' on 'American Bandstand' in 1821." Donny Osmond called Clark "an inspiration" who always puts entertainment before celebrity. Osmond's sister, Marie, along with Tony Orlando, Chubby Checker, the cast of hit musical "Jersey Boys" and R&B group The Spinners, honored Clark with live performances. They followed with a group number of "Bandstand Boogie," the "Bandstand" theme which Manilow wrote. With his arm around Clark, Seacrest said, "I personally want to thank you for all that you've done for our industry, for music and for me." Clark was overcome with emotion as the crowd came to its feet. (StarPulse, 6/29/2010)

Young stars Gary Dowson and Sophie Lord lead the all-singing, all-dancing cast as Tony and Lola. And it’s not just fans of Manilow’s music who will enjoy the show, with hit songs "Who Needs To Dream," "Just Arrived" and "Sweet Heaven" all featuring, as well as the title song. • 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards - Dick Clark was brought to tears Sunday night by a standing ovation at the 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, after Ryan Seacrest led the audience through decades of memories in a tribute recognizing "American Bandstand" and Clark's influence on pop music. Chubby Checker rocked "The Twist," pulling Susan Lucci up on stage to dance and then picking her up and twirling her around as a finale. A tribute montage included recorded messages from Cher, Barry Manilow, Garth Brooks and even Simon Cowell, who made the point that without "Bandstand," there would be no "American Idol," and closed his bit by letting Clark know he is "the man." Clark, 80, attended the event with his wife, Kari Wigton, and expressed his thanks to all before his emotions got the better of him. Clark suffered a stroke in 2003; since 2005, Seacrest has been co-hosting "New Year's Rockin' Eve" with him under a variety of titles. (Los Angeles Times, 6/28/2010)

  • Daytime Emmys 2010: Dick Clark's touching tribute - Legendary host of "American Bandstand" Dick Clark was honored at the 2010 Daytime Emmys. His sort-of protege Ryan Seacrest gave a heartfelt introduction and then a plethora of stars were both on-hand to perform or had pre-taped a message. The live performances by the Spinners, Chubby Checker, Marie Osmond and the cast of "Jersey Boys" were incredibly fun. Each artist did one of their own songs -- "Jersey Boys" did a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song -- and then after the video messages, the group performed Barry Manilow's hit and the "American Bandstand" theme song, "Bandstand Boogie." Video messages came in from Garth Brooks, Simon Cowell, Cher and Manilow himself, followed by Ryan Seacrest speaking with Dick Clark out in the audience. (Zap2It, 6/27/2010)

  • Straight No Chaser bringing organic music to the masses - After recording "One Voice" with Barry Manilow for their third album, "With a Twist," the members of Straight No Chaser are giving some thought to who they'd like to perform with next. "Maybe someone you wouldn't expect," said Dan Ponce, Straight No Chaser's founder. Doing the unexpected is Straight No Chaser's way. They're a 10-member a cappella group on Atlantic Records that's selling out shows all over the country. Ponce said by year's end they'll sell out 150 shows. The group is performing at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan June 4 ... On "With a Twist," which was released in April, the group covers popular '80s songs "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell and "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House, popular '90s songs "Under the Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and "Wonderwall" by Oasis, as well as some more contemporary songs. But they're most excited about covering Manilow's "One Voice" with Manilow himself. Straight No Chaser opened for Manilow at a 2009 Hollywood Bowl show, and the singer became a fan. "It's humbling to have an iconic musical figure on your album," Ponce said about the collaboration. Straight No Chaser: 8 p.m. Friday, June 4 at the Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan. $28.50-$45. (847) 782-2366, www.ticketmaster.com. (Pioneer Local, 5/26/2010)

  • Straight No Chaser is touring in support of its latest release, "With a Twist" - Straight No Chaser has been known to cause a few double takes in concert when the audience hears a bass line and rhythms, but sees only singers on stage. "It’s just the 10 of us, 10 mikes, that’s it," vocalist Walter Chase said in a recent phone interview. "Even on the album, what might sound like a drum machine, that’s all vocal percussion that has been engineered." The vocally produced rhythm sounds are just one of the facets of Straight No Chaser that make the group unique. As singers, the 10-man a capella group creates a pretty special blend as well. That much is apparent on the group’s newly released CD, "With a Twist," in which Straight No Chaser plies its vocal talents to a diverse set of a dozen covers ... A highlight of the project for the vocal group was the opportunity to work, albeit by long distance, with Barry Manilow on a version of that singer’s tune, "One Voice." The group first crossed paths with the singer when Manilow had Straight No Chaser open a show at the Hollywood Bowl. "It was probably for me one of the most amazing performances that we did," Chase said. "We got to open for Barry and meet him. When he came out on stage, he had very nice things to say to his audience about us, how he enjoyed our sound. It was really a great experience." What: Straight No Chaser, in concert. When: 8 p.m. May 17-18. Where: Aladdin Theater, 3017 S.E. Milwaukie Ave., Portland. Cost: $30-$35 through Ticketmaster, 800-745-3000 or http://ticketmaster.com. The May 17 concert is sold out. • Sizzling a cappella group Straight No Chaser will play the Warner Theatre on Nov. 29. Tickets ($39.50, $29.50) go on sale Friday at the Tullio Arena box office, Ticketmaster outlets, and by phone at 452-4857. This is the 10-member group that started at Indiana University in 1996, then split. A decade later, they reunited and became an unlikely YouTube sensation -- more than 11 million views -- with their version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" (with Toto's "Africa" mixed in). That led to a deal with Atlantic Records. "With a Twist," SNC's first non-holiday release, features Oasis' "Wonderwall," Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge," Coldplay's "Fix You," and "One Voice" by Barry Manilow, who appears as a guest vocalist. • Straight No Chaser "With a Twist" - On their brand new album, With a Twist (Atlantic Records), Straight No Chaser blends a wide array of a capella harmonies for downright undeniable renditions of cuts from Jason Mraz, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis and many more. With a Twist possesses a classic barbershop quartet elegance with a shot of modern humor and panache, making for the ultimate 21st century a capella album. Straight No Chaser's Randy Stine (RS) sat down with ARTISTdirect.com (AD) editor Rick Florino for an exclusive interview about putting the Twist in With a Twist [and] collaborating with Barry Manilow in [an] exclusive interview ... AD: How did you go about choosing the songs for With a Twist? RS: I always have a mix of different stuff we've come up with. Sometimes, it's a song that one of the guys likes and chooses to arrange. Jerome was at the barbershop when he heard "Under the Bridge" come on the radio. He couldn't believe everybody there was rocking out to the original Red Hot Chili Peppers song and bopping their heads to it. He thought, "This could be interesting for us to do." That's how we came up with the idea of doing that. When Dan was working on the arrangement to "I'm Yours," he was trying to find something that would put a twist on things. His girlfriend at the time happened to be in the room and she said, "It sounds like you're arranging "Somewhere Over the Rainbow!" He ended up playing with it and found a way to work it into the song ... AD: It would be cool if you could get Barry Manilow out there to do "One Voice" with you guys at a show or two! RS: You never know! We're very happy to have him on the album, and that turned out to be a great little project. We're really happy with that track, and we're happy that he's happy with it. We opened for him at the Hollywood Bowl back in October of last year, and that's how that relationship started. He took a liking to us and he dug the idea of doing a track with us. "One Voice" is his original song, and he always said that he wanted to have a new recording of it. So everything worked out perfectly. (ArtistDirect.com, 4/21/2010)

  • Straight shot to the top: Popular a cappella group to perform in Chicago - Chicago area and Northwest Indiana fans will find out what the hoopla over Straight No Chaser is all about when the group performs Saturday at Chicago's Park West and Sunday at The Chicago Theatre. Straight No Chaser was formed by Dan Ponce in 1996 when he was a sophomore at Indiana University in Bloomington. Ponce, 33, said he and the other group members were taken by surprise when they attracted so much attention originally online. "Most people first learned about us on the Internet. We're lucky that the head of Atlantic Records was one of the viewers because he liked it enough to take a risk in signing an a cappella group to a major label," he said. So far, the group has released two holiday-themed albums. But next week, that changes. Straight No Chaser's first pop album, "With a Twist," will be released Tuesday. "Barry Manilow is making a guest appearance on this album. So that was real exciting," he said. (Northwest Indiana Times, 4/9/2010)

  • The Magic of Manilow - Performing arts students are bringing the work of a modern musical genius to life. Pupils at Macleans College have been rehearsing for weeks in preparation for opening night of their production of Barry Manilow’s musical, Copacabana. The 50-member cast has been rehearsing their lines and dance steps for the show, which is described by one performer as a musical "antidepressant". Copacabana presents the story of Lola as told through the eyes of Tony, an aspiring songwriter. Chris Symon, who plays Tony, says the main thing he loves about the show is the huge number of songs – 32 in total. Year 11 student Tyra Wilson, who plays Lola, says people can expect to leave the show in a much happier mood than when they arrived. Jacqui Hood, who is the head of dance and drama at the Bucklands Beach school, says people can look forward to some great singing and dancing in this family show. Copacabana is being staged at Macleans College from May 3-8 at 7pm, with a matinee on May 4 at 1pm. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for students. To book, call the school’s accounts department on (09) 535-2620. (The Times (New Zealand), 5/3/2010)

  • Barry Manilow, Monica Mancini and Dave Koz rocked the roof off the Ahmanson Theatre during LACHSA gala - "I can take care of that," offered Barry Manilow when the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts that serves our talented youths in Los Angeles was without much-needed musical instruments for its classes. He immediately donated half a million dollars for new instruments that now accommodate thousands of students. We discovered this during the jubilant evening of the Arts High Foundation’s gala at the sold-out Ahmanson Theatre when the LACHSA celebrated its 25th anniversary to a rapt audience, raising more than $600,000. From the prologue of the LACHSA students harmonizing and high-stepping to the Jellicle number from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running Broadway musical, Cats, we anticipated a pumped-up show. Right on we were, with celebrated artists performing, and cloudbursts of applause following Barry’s blow-out finale, after he sang his signature songs, "It’s a Miracle," and "One Voice." Our BH Courier’s Marcia Wilson Hobbs, who presides over the fundraising Arts High Foundation, informed that Barry also entertained during LACHSA’s first graduation class – "he’s incredibly loyal and supportive." The evening’s first Champion of Arts Education honored philanthropist Flora Thornton, who was introduced by opera star Marilyn Horne in a personal musical tribute. Video accolades followed, with tenor Dominic Domingo and soprano Julie Adams performing in Flora’s honor. "That piccolo-playing pixie from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania" was composer John Williams’ nod to the prolific composer Henry "Hank" Mancini, whose film and TV music embraces generations, and whose legacy, thanks to wife Ginny Mancini, has enriched the arts in our town. John and architect Frank Gehry acknowledged donor Ginny with her Champion of Arts Education tribute, followed by saxophonist Dave Koz interpreting Hank’s catchy Pink Panther theme. Daughter Monica Mancini performed two of her dad’s favorites, "Charade," from the witty and suspenseful film starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, and the immortal "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany’s... • L.A. County High School for the Arts celebrates 25 years - The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts opened in 1985 as a training ground to transform talented teens into artists. Twenty-five years later, more than 3,000 students from across Los Angeles County, including more than a third from the San Fernando Valley, have graduated from the program. Of those, hundreds have managed to move on to professional careers in the performing arts thanks in large part to the school, which celebrates its 25th anniversary with a big gala event Saturday. Current students and alumni of LACHSA are expected to fill the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown Saturday for the event that also will raise funds for the school and include appearances by celebrity grads, such as singers Josh Groban and Fergie of Black Eyed Peas fame, actress Jenna Elfman, and playwright Josefina Lopez. The night also will include performances from talented LACHSA students, who will dance jazz numbers and perform everything from gospel to big band and will honor the school's long list of supporters, including singer Barry Manilow. • Arts High celebrates its 25th anniversary in style - On Saturday, April 17th, the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts (known as "Arts High") is holding a gala celebration to commemorate its 25th anniversary as one of the country's leading training ground in the performing and visual arts. LA notables like Natalie Cole, Arts High alumnus Josh Groban, Barry Manilow, Marilyn Horne, Bob Newhart, composer John Williams, architect/designer Frank Gehry will gather at the Ahmanson Theatre to pay tribute to the school's accomplishments and raise funds to continue the delivery of excellent arts education in Los Angeles, despite the looming threat of budget cutbacks at both the state and local level. Founded in 1985, the tuition-free public school is run by the Los Angeles County Office of Education in partnership with and on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA). The program offers a specialized program combining college-preparatory academic instruction and conservatory-style training in the visual and performing arts. Tickets are still available for the anniversary gala, which will honor Dr. Edward Kantor, Ginny Mancini, Barry Manilow and Flora Thornton. The school's current Principal, George Simpson, an arts educator with bachelor and Masters degrees in music, gave LAObserved a quick Q&A in time for the upcoming fundraiser. Why is LACHSA honoring Barry Manilow at the anniversary celebration? "Barry Manilow has been a friend of LACHSA since the early days of LACHSA. He made repeated visits to the school, he donated instruments. We thought it only fitting that, at our 25th anniversary, we recognize and honor him for all that he has done over the years" - George Simpson, LACHSA Principal. (LAObserved, 4/13/2010)

  • L.A. County High School for the Arts has celebrity lineup to celebrate its 25th anniversary - These may be tough times for maintaining excellence in public education, given the condition of the California state government that's primarily responsible for funding it, but that's not stopping the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts from celebrating its past and present in a rare high-profile event. The specialized public high school, housed in borrowed quarters at Cal State Los Angeles, will take over some prime downtown arts real estate on April 17 -- the Ahmanson Theatre -- to celebrate its 25th anniversary in elite company, and to boost the private fundraising it counts on even in the best of times. The headliner is Barry Manilow -- who got his own schooling in Brooklyn but was one of the earliest supporters of L.A.'s answer to the kind of arts high school chronicled in the film and television series "Fame." At the school, students audition for spots, and those who succeed are accepted into a regimen that includes a daily menu of academic courses, followed by studio work in visual art, music, dance or theater. Also on the Ahmanson bill are Natalie Cole, Bob Newhart and Monica Mancini (the singing daughter of composer Henry Mancini), with the arts high school's jazz ensemble and chorus providing backup. Among the non-performing stars expected to be on hand making presentations are Marilyn Horne, Frank Gehry and John Williams. Video greetings will be extended by Plácido Domingo, Quincy Jones, Janet Jackson and Michael Feinstein, among others. Singer Josh Groban, a 1999 graduate of the arts high school, will be among the presenters; other well-known alumni include actress Jenna Elfman, longtime Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater member Matthew Rushing, visual artist Kehinde Wiley and "High School Musical" cast member Corbin Bleu. The evening's honorees, for contributions to the school and to the arts, are Manilow, who has been a supporter from nearly the beginning, having appeared at the first graduation ceremony in 1987; Dr. Ed Kantor, a Beverly Hills ear, nose and throat specialist known for treating performers; Ginny Mancini, widow of the late film composer; and philanthropist Flora Thornton, naming donor to USC's Thornton School of Music. Tickets are $100 to $2,500, and available through the Ahmanson box office, (213) 628-2772. John Jackson, executive director of the private nonprofit foundation that raises money to augment the school's public funding, said the hope is to net $400,000 for its programs in what figures to be a difficult year for state funding of education. • Copacabana in Hobart - In the theatre, they say "the show must go on". And that was the case yesterday after an accident threatened to derail the upcoming Hobart Repertory Theatre Society production of Copacabana. Actor Richard Kowaluk, who plays Copacabana club owner Sam Silver, had emergency plastic surgery yesterday afternoon after nearly losing an ear in a construction accident ... Mr. Kowaluk said the operation was unpleasant but he was determined to be ready for the dress rehearsal. Mr. Kowaluk's bandages should be off by opening night on Friday (April 16) but some of the stage direction has had to be changed. "At one point in the play they're supposed to grab me by the ear, so it's now going to be the cheek instead," he said. The all-Tasmanian production of the Barry Manilow musical is on at the Playhouse Theatre in Bathurst St from Friday to May 1. (The Mercury (Australia), 4/13/2010)

  • "Copacabana" dances into Henry tonight - The Henry Players are putting the finishing touches on their latest production, which directors and cast members hope will put a spring in the steps of viewers. The acting group will present "Copacabana" tonight (April 9), through Sunday (April 11), at the Henry County Performing Arts Center in McDonough. "Copacabana" is a musical based on a 1978 Barry Manilow hit by the same name. The production tells the love story of Tony Forte, who works at the Copacabana club in New York City, and Lola, an aspiring showgirl who comes to the club, according to Co-Director Renee Yawn. "Back in the day — it's set in 1945 — if you played the Copa, you arrived," said Yawn, 42. "You were really something. So Lola arrives in New York City with two suitcases and a dream, and from there she meets folks that work at the Copacabana. They take her in, and she feels like they’re family." Lola begins performing at the club, until she is whisked away to Havana, Cuba, by Rico Castelli, who owns a rival club there. "There's a big escape attempt and a rescue ... for her," Yawn said. Yawn and fellow Co-Director Adriana Beckner, both Manilow fans, jumped at the chance to direct the production after learning about the musical. "We looked at each other, and we said, 'Oh my gosh, that would be so fabulous to direct,' and we'd love to bring it to the Henry Players with all the glitz and the glamour," said Yawn. "It's boy-meets-girl, boy-falls-in-love-with-girl, showgirls, intrigue, drama and all this beautiful music set behind it. We just got really excited about it." Yawn added that although the Henry Players have addressed serious subjects in past productions, her goal with "Copacabana" is simply to entertain audiences. "Copacabana" will be presented today through Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., each night, with a matinee showing Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance for adults, $10 for children and seniors, and $1 more at the door.
