  • Lorna Luft to honor her mom in show at McCallum - Lorna Luft will return to the McCallum Theatre on Friday for a hometown concert. Luft, 57, will perform “Lorna Luft Celebrates Her Mother, Judy Garland.” She recently spoke to Desert Post Weekly at one of her favorite Rancho Mirage restaurants, P.F. Chang's, with topics including ... friend Barry Manilow: “He is family to me. When I first decided to take on this unbelievable catalog, he is the first person I called and I said, ‘I think I'm ready to do this.' I really expected a very, very long speech, but all I heard was, ‘Well, it's about time.' Your best friend is going to be the person who's most honest with you. He introduced me to the Welches (Ken and Mitzi, who wrote her show and productions for Manilow and Carol Burnett). He's been my friend for so long and he is from that unbelievable school of entertainment. Everybody should take lessons in how to be this unbelievable performer... (The Desert Sun, 3/25/2010)

  • Manilow Replaced '70s 'Copa' Jacket With Tailed Tux - Finally, after 32 years, the most famous costume from the '70s has been updated. Barry Manilow, who has hit the Las Vegas Strip with his new show, traded his famous white ruffled 'Copacabana' jacket for an elegant black tuxedo jacket with tails and dapper top hat. The Smithsonian Museum in Washington requested the original 'Copa' jacket to include in its pop culture wing. Sadly, though, they returned it after Barry said, "I always knew it would end up in an institution one day." (Those museum types have no sense of humor!) Still, Barry does have a sense of humor, and he tells me: "I'm going to miss that silly Copacabana shirt. I've worn it for so many years, it's walking around without me!" Check out Barry at The Paris in Vegas, the hottest spot North (and West) of Havana. (Popeater, 3/25/2010)

  • 'Power of Love' windfall: $27 million for Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health - The money flowed like chilled Dom Perignon at the Bellagio on Saturday night, and once more the Keep Memory Alive "Power of Love" gala ignored economic realities elsewhere and continued to plow ahead with a blade dipped in gold. Twenty-seven million dollars was raised during the 6-and-a-half hour lovefest on the Strip. That's the entire announced total, counting table and individual seat reservations (which ranged from $15,000 to $75,000 per table and $1,500 to $7,500 per seat), live and silent auction items and a handful of individual anonymous contributions that exceeded $1 million. The money raised goes toward the further development and operational costs for the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, brainchild of Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada head and Las Vegas native Larry Ruvo ... "If you remember anything tonight, remember this: Cleveland Clinic, $27 million," Ruvo said from the stage, after new Paris Las Vegas headliner Barry Manilow boogied off the stage to the familiar rhythms of "Copacabana" ... The night concluded with a Manilow medley, as some of the more sprightly guests near the stage responding to his invitation to dance out the night with Lola, Tony and Rico at the Copa. • John Barrowman launches new album - For his third album, John Barrowman has chosen to record his most meaningful selection of songs yet ... and this time around he’s focussing almost exclusively on songs from the shows. But rather than simply paying tribute to a genre he has rather made his own, Barrowman has made use of some of his favourite songs to shed light on his own life ... "Copacabana (from Copacabana)" - "This is a bit of an indulgent one, but all of my previous records have included a Barry Manilow number and this one is perhaps his best, certainly in terms of the story it tells. It has such a strong narrative. Anyway, whenever I cover a track I send it to its author, just to see what they think. Sometimes they’re critical and offer notes, other times I just don’t hear anything back at all! I’ve known Barry for about three years now. We’ve performed together, at Proms in The Park for example, and he’s just great, a wicked sense of humour, dry wit, and he thought this was perhaps the best version of one of his songs he’d heard. Which was a bit of a boost, let me tell you!" ... "Memory (from Cats)" ... "The Kid Inside (from Is There Life After High School?)" ... "My Eyes Adored You (from Jersey Boys)" ... "You’ll Never Walk Alone (from Carousel)" (Wales Online, 2/25/2010)

  • Manilow waives fee for fundraiser - Barry Manilow is getting involved with Las Vegas charities in a way that few out-of-town entertainers have done. Manilow, the featured entertainer at Saturday's "Keep Memory Alive" gala benefit at the Bellagio, is waiving his usual $1.2 million fee, which includes his orchestra. That's not unusual for Manilow, who doesn't charge charities. But he's also picking up the tab for his orchestra, as well as transportation and other expenses, a savings of several hundred thousand dollars for Larry Ruvo's fundraiser for the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Manilow will have another announcement on March 5, opening night of his new headliner residency at the Paris Las Vegas. There are rumblings that he's planning to implement a music program in Las Vegas similar to the one he started in Palm Springs, where The Manilow Music Project has provided musical instruments, along with music supplies, to public middle and high schools in the Coachella Valley. The Brooklyn native, who lives in South Palm Springs, told The Desert Sun in Palms Springs last year that he wants to give Coachella Valley students the same opportunity he received in his high school music class. "I would have been a loser had I not had that music class," Manilow told the newspaper... (Las Vegas Review-Journal, 2/25/2010)

  • Lola brings tropical theme to Navan - St. Mary's Musical Society in Navan has announced details of its 2010 production, '[Copacabana]' which will be directed by award-winning Navan native director, Donal Cantwell. Cantwell, who won the National AIMS award for Best Director in 2006 with his production of the musical 'Assassins' has been working hard on the production with a cast of over forty since October. Most people know Barry Manilow's famous song Copacabana and will agree its one of those tunes that really sticks in your head. In the early '90s Manilow decided to write a musical based on the lyrics of the song in the style of the technicolor musicals of the 1940s. Copacabana opened on London's West End in 1994 and ran for over two years with many theatregoers reporting the shows 'feel good factor' and 'catchy songs' as their main sources of enjoyment. It was the first of the new wave of musicals created by pop song writers based around their own music and was followed by successful shows including Abba's 'Mamma Mia' and Queen's 'We Will Rock You'. The musical tells the story of Lola who arrives in New York 'with a suitcase in her hand and a dream in her heart' at a time when "...music and passion were always in fashion!" Tony is a bartender/composer who falls in love with Lola and helps her become a 'Copa Girl' in the famous 'Copacabana' nightclub. While performing, Lola attracts the amorous attentions of gangster Rico "...who wears a diamond...". Rico abducts Lola and takes her to his rival nightclub, The Tropicana in Havana. Tony, with the help of his Copacabana friends, must now rescue Lola before... well, even if you know the song, there are still a few surprises! Copacabana will run from Friday 19th - Sat 20th March and then from Wed 24th - Sat 27th March with ticket prices ranging from €15 -18. Many people are booking tickets in advance as St Mary's are running the show over six performances instead of the usual eight. The Solstice box office number is (046) 909 2300 open daily from 11am - 4pm. (The Meath Chronicle, 2/17/2010)

  • Valentine's Day sweetened by love-themed music - On Valentine's Day, many lovers try to select the perfect mix of songs that will lead to passionate fireworks at the end of a romantic evening. Music retailers and record labels have made sure there are plenty of options for those looking to set the mood. "It's second to Christmas. It's a gift-giving holiday," says Scott Seviour, senior vice president of artist development at RCA Music Group ... Barry Manilow's latest album "The Greatest Love Songs of All Time" wasn't specifically intended as a V-Day release -- it was released late last month -- but "it all ties into love and romance," says Seviour. For Manilow, whose hits like "Mandy" and "Can't Smile Without You" have long soothed the ears of the sappy and lovestruck, it gave him a chance to tackle some romantic classics like "The Look of Love." "I've made some beautiful records, some beautiful songs over the years, but this is the most beautiful album I've ever made," says Manilow. "It's a very romantic album and it is perfect for Valentine's Day." Manilow doesn't consider himself big on Valentine's Day, but says it is "a sweet holiday, and ... this album is perfect for the people who really love it." (Yahoo! Finance, 2/12/2010)

  • Barry Manilow has given Susan Boyle a big thumbs-up - but has warned the Britain's Got Talent runner-up of the perils of fame. Copacabana superstar Manilow, one of the biggest singing stars of all time with record sales of more than 80 million behind him, said that stardom had almost finished him off. "With Susan Boyle, fame hit her so hard that it kind of knocked her off her feet. When she appeared on Britain's Got Talent, it was very moving to see what she could do. 'I think she's a good singer, and everyone's very curious to see how far she can go, but speaking from my own personal experiences, I hope she keeps her old friends and family around her." Barry said that his loved ones helped him keep his feet on the ground, "In my case, they kept me grounded because when fame hit me, suddenly everything was different. I couldn't even go to the grocery store, and it was quite an unpleasant experience at times. I was kind of lost because the only people around me were people I was paying. It's easy in that situation to get into drugs and drink and lose the way but, luckily, I had my family there to say: 'What's happening to you?' Success can be harder to cope with than failure... There's no school that teaches you how to handle it all." Barry's latest album, a compilation of love songs called The Greatest Love Of All, is in the shops now in time for Valentine's Day.
