  • Copacabana, Norbury Youth Theatre, Droitwich - Barry Manilow's musical tribute to the movie musicals of the 1940s was a challenging ask for the Youth Theatre - but the enthusiastic crew carried it off well in front of an appreciative audience. While creating the world’s next big hit, aspiring songwriter Stephen is carried back to an era when “music and passion were always the fashion” at the world famous Copacabana nightclub in New York City. In his dream, Lola Lamar, a hopeful showgirl, is launched on the path to stardom as a Copa Girl with the help of Tony Starr, a bartender with dreams of his own. Captivated by Lola’s performance, the villainous Rico whisks her away to the Tropicana nightclub in Havana where a tale of old-fashioned love, jealousy, and murder in the entangled lives of Lola, Tony and Rico unfolds... • Great American songsmith Johnny Mercer - Barry Manilow offered his remembrances of Johnny Mercer on Radio 2 of the BBC Nov. 13 as part of the worldwide centennial celebration of the man widely considered America's greatest lyricist before Bob Dylan ... Mercer had a Palm Springs home and collaborated with many desert residents. Barry wrote his great ballad, "When October Comes" with a Mercer lyric given to him by Mercer's late wife, Ginger. Rancho Mirage resident Michael Masser considered Mercer his mentor. Like Barry, Michael is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, founded by Mercer and music publishers Howie Richmond and the late Abe Olman. (The Desert Sun, 11/24/2009)

  • Tribute to Johnny Mercer - The folks at KFAI radio are going all out with a centennial tribute to songwriting legend and Southern-fried bon vivant Johnny Mercer. It's a two-part, six-hour, celebrity-packed profile that begins Wednesday, on what would have been his 100th birthday. Best known as the brilliant lyricist of such classics as "Moon River," "That Old Black Magic," "Autumn Leaves," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Skylark" and "Blues in the Night," the versatile Mercer also was an actor, an occasional composer and a terrific vocal interpreter of his own material, including timeless tracks for Capitol Records -- which he co-founded -- plus groovy duets with Bing Crosby and Bobby Darin. The list of guests assembled by the "Rockin' in Rhythm" show's David Cummings and guest host Les Block reads like a "Who's Who" of American popular song, including Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Kay Starr, Barry Manilow, Margaret Whiting, Nancy Wilson, "Moon River" hitmaker Andy Williams, composing great Johnny Mandel and the songwriter's daughter, Mandy Mercer. Dr. John, who recorded a CD's worth of Mercer material, also adds salty commentary, as does Philip Furia, author of "Skylark: The Life and Times of Johnny Mercer." The special airs from 6 to 9 a.m. Wednesday and Nov. 25 (at 90.3 and 106.7 FM). But the shows, which will wind up in the University of Georgia's Mercer archives, will be archived at www.kfai.org for easy computer streaming anytime you'd like. (Star Tribune, 11/16/2009)

  • Music and passion at the Copacabana - This week, Curtain Up Productions brings a distinct West End flavour to the Grimsby Auditorium with their stunning staging of Barry Manilow's Copacabana. Director Martyn Knight has once again steered the former Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Amateur Operatic Society as they produce a show that is vibrant, glamorous and colourful. Unlike many West End musicals, this production even boasts a 15-piece orchestra and Keith Weston's conducting ensures the music is sweet as it moves from rhythm to Latin to big band. Copacabana is the story of Lola told through the eyes of aspiring songwriter Stephen who slips in to a dream as he struggles to pen the lyrics to the shows title song. In his dream, the year is 1947 and Lola is a wannabe singer, Tony falls in love with her and with his help, she becomes a Copa girl at the New York Copacabana nightclub. Unfortunately, gangster Rico abducts Lola and whisks her away to his own club in Havana and it falls to Tony and friends to rescue her... Copacabana is at the Grimsby Auditorium until Saturday. • Review: Copacabana, Theatre Royal - You've got to hand it to Barry Manilow, creating a spectacular two-hour show from a three-minute pop song is no mean feat. And you've got to hand it to Nottingham Operatic Society for triumphantly transferring his Broadway hit to the amateur stage because that is no mean feat either. Manilow's story about a show girl named Lola who arrives in New York from Hicksville searching for fame, falls in love, gets drugged, kidnapped and almost murdered, is as pacy, dazzling and dramatic as it sounds ... and NOPS rise admirably to the challenge. Talented acting school graduate Andrew Regester, who takes the lead role of Tony the struggling songwriter, is a real bonus for the company with his professionalism and confidence, and those assets rub off on the rest of this enthusiastic cast who attack the work with a real sense of fun. Cathy Miller does a great job as Lola, ditzy and dishy in equal measure; Vanessa Christian relished her tough girl role as gangster's moll Conchita, and Dan Armstrong as Rico, the villain of the piece, also gave a powerful performance. And there was strong support from Jayne Russell and Lyndon Warnsby, plus a camp cameo by Paul McPherson as Willie the waiter who raised a laugh every time he quickstepped across the stage. Sparkling costumes and witty choreography all added up to an enjoyable night and I wouldn't be surprised to see this production in the running when the amateur awards are handed out. • Clint Eastwood Presents Johnny Mercer: The Dream's On Me (TCM) - Film director Clint Eastwood's love of jazz and American popular song is far from a secret, especially following his feature-length biopic about alto saxophonist Charlie Parker (Bird, 1988), during which the ever restless Eastwood got the idea to produce a feature-length film about pianist Thelonious Monk, released somewhat later during the same year as Straight No Chaser. Hence, it should surprise few that Eastwood will introduce viewers to a month-long 100th birthday celebration of American lyricist Johnny Mercer on Turner Classic Movies (TCM), beginning with Eastwood Presents Johnny Mercer: The Dream's On Me, which will be telecast in the US on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 with a repeat on Wednesday, November 18. Throughout the month of November, when Mercer would have been 100, Wednesdays on TCM will be devoted to classic Hollywood films with lyrics penned and, in some instances, performed by Mercer, who not only wrote but sang more hit songs than virtually any other American songwriter ... While Mercer's is a familiar voice and face to anyone who remembers the popular music of the 1930s and 1940s, as well as his later work with singers Bobby Darin, Andy Williams and Barry Manilow (who set his elegiac lyric "When October Goes" to music before releasing a recorded performance posthumously), it comes as a surprise to even many of his steadfast admirers to learn that it was Mercer who founded Capitol records, which would go on to become one of the several most important recording companies of the latter half of the 20th century. But above all, Mercer was a man of words. And more than that he possessed an ear for the vernacular that was capable of transforming song lyrics into poetry... (All About Jazz, 11/6/2009)

  • Nottingham Operatics perform Copacabana - Just for next week, her name will be Lola. She will, indeed, be a showgirl. And yes, before you ask – yellow feathers in her hair – check! Dress cut down to there – all present and correct. Cathy Miller, 33, a solicitors' secretary from the city centre, will be taking on the role of one of pop's most famous tongue-in-cheek tragedy queens in Barry Manilow's Copacabana at the Theatre Royal from Tuesday. Copacabana is another sure-fire hit, following on from the Operatics' sell-out success with Oliver! last year. It contains a similarly catchy score, composed by Dear Old Bazza which incorporates a couple of his other hits: "Sweet Heaven" and "Who Needs to Dream." "It's in the same genre as Mamma Mia – it's going to be a really good feelgood show," says Cathy. For those unfamiliar with the production, apparently the lyrics to Barry's hit song are a pretty accurate indication as to the content of the show. "It's really similar – the lyrics do tell the story of the show," says Cathy. Well, almost. Lola does not losing her mind – although she does go through a bit of a rocky patch. "Poor old Lola – she does go through it!" laughs Cathy. "And it's all Barry Manilow's fault." And Tony (Andrew Regester) may actually survive his shoot-out with the evil Rico (played by Dan Armstrong, a doctor in Chesterfield). To find out if that's the case, you'll have to book a ticket. All ticket sales help to fund the Operatics' performances, with any profits going to charity. (This Is Nottingham, 11/6/2009)

  • Blantyre actor Gary Bennet to star in lead role - A talented Blantyre actor will take to the stage later this month at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow. After a hugely successful sell out run playing Roger in the rock musical 'Rent' at the Gilmorehill G12 in May, Gary Bennet is set to tread the boards in ‘Copacabana’ at the city theatre. Gary has landed the lead role of Stephen/Tony in Barry Manilow's Musical Comedy which runs from November 17-21. ‘Copacabana’ is inspired by the unforgettable opening of Barry Manilow’s Grammy award-winning hit song and tells a tale of old-fashioned love, jealousy and murder which unfolds amidst dazzling costumes, spectacular sets and sensational choreography. Gary said: “Copacabana is very different to shows I have appeared in before but I have always wanted to do a show like this. As I am a romantic at heart and I'm a big fan of the old 1940's-50's MGM style movie musicals starring idols I greatly admire such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Gene Kelly. I play two characters in the show. Stephen, a songwriter who lives in present day New York and his imagined alter ego Tony who lives in 1940's New York.” ‘Copacabana’ will also see a young Hamilton woman make her debut at the King’s Theatre in a principal role. The University of the West of Scotland journalism student, Maria Boyle, will be taking on the role of Latina bombshell Conchita Alvarez. (Hamilton Advertiser, 11/5/2009)

  • Manilow toots LAUSD's horn - As arts programs in schools across the country shrink, Barry Manilow is making certain that music students in the Los Angeles Unified School District will be able to perform with new instruments. Manilow announced to a cheering audience at his concert at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday that he was donating $100,000 to the district for new band instruments, said Monica Carazo, spokesperson for LAUSD. "It will be used for all kinds of instruments, whatever the needs are," Carazo said Tuesday. "From saxophones to flutes, hopefully this money will be able to help us with that." • It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas - Come Tuesday, a veritable stocking stuffed with new (and not-so-new) Yuletide releases hits CD bins. A peek: "Christmas in the Heart," Bob Dylan. "Christmas From the Heart," David Archuleta. "Gold and Green," Sugarland. "Ultimate Christmas Collection," Jackson 5. "This Christmas," Aretha Franklin. And "In the Swing of Christmas," Barry Manilow. Originally released in '07, but it sees light again, just like many of the songs - "Jingle Bells" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" among them. • Speaking of Christmas music ... We can break the news that Barry Manilow has re-signed with Arista Records, and his first release will be "In the Swing of Christmas," which arrives in stores on Oct. 13. It'll include Barry's take on all the classics -- "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Silver Bells," "Count Your Blessings," etc. And also Manilow's original composition "Christmas is Just Around the Corner." In January, just as we are recovering from all the enforced goodwill, overeating and over-gifting of the holidays, Barry comes out with another CD from Arista, "The Greatest Love Songs of All Time." We don't have a track listing yet, but Barry's no slouch at recognizing a romantic tune; the album is sure to be chock full of songs to make the heart swell and break. (Chicago Tribune, 10/7/2009)

The first episode to be made available features Barry Manilow. Radio 4 controller Mark Damazer said the website would be an “all singing, all dancing affair”. People visiting the site can compare castaways’ choices, and see which tracks are most chosen by guests on the show. Manilow, unsurprisingly, said he would take a piano as his luxury on a desert island, and chose a recording of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Judy Garland to listen to. He opted for a practical book to take with him - Bear Grylls’ “Man vs Wild - Survival Techniques From The Most Dangerous Places On Earth”. (Broadcast Now, 9/29/2009)

  • Desert Island Discs comes to BBC iPlayer - The BBC has completed rights negotiations with the relatives of late Desert Island Discs founder Roy Plomley to make the programme available on BBC iPlayer ... After discussions with the family reached a positive conclusion, Damazer said that it is a "grand moment" to get the 67-year-old show on iPlayer. The new arrangement started yesterday for singer Barry Manilow's choices, which are currently available via the on-demand platform. Damazer announced that an "all-singing, all-dancing" new website is planned for Desert Island Discs, in which users will be able to compare their own choices with past participants and also browse the most popular selections. All programmes will soon be made available in podcast form, as well. (Digital Spy, 9/28/2009)

  • Strong cast in 'Copa': Summer Garden Theatre production of Manilow show is perfect way to end season - Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre capped its season with Barry Manilow's "Copacabana," a fast-paced show-within-a-show that is light on plot and heavy on music. It was originally a television special in 1985, and then a stage production in 1991. It was spawned from the lyrics of Manilow's 1978 hit single, and proved an ideal choice to complete ASGT's 2009 season.

Smartly directed by Jerry Vess, "Copacabana" immediately draws the audience into the story of 1970s songwriter Stephen, who is trying out song ideas in his head as he prepares to celebrate his sixth wedding anniversary with his wife, Samantha. Stephen soon drifts into a 1940s movie musical plot, where he becomes Tony, a struggling songwriter among similarly struggling show folks working at New York's Copacabana nightclub. In Summer Garden's production, music director Ken Kimble serves as pianist and conductor to 10 onstage musicians who bring Manilow's pleasant score to life. Choreographer Katie Harrington's inspired choreography captures MGM's famous Technicolor musicals, as do Elizabeth Hudson's attractive costumes. As the song says, "music and passion were always in fashion at the Copa," where we meet Tulsa, Okla., arrival and soon-to-be showgirl Lola La Mar (Nicole Anderson), bartender/budding songwriter Tony (Nathan Bowen), former Copa dancer and now cigarette girl Gladys Murphy (Emily Sergo), Copa club owner Sam Silver (John Cestone), rival nightclub owner Rico Castelli (Kevin Wallace) and his soon-to-be ex-headliner Conchita Alvarez (Alicia Sweeney).

Loosely based on Manilow's hit song about showgirl Lola, the plot darkens as she is noticed by mobster/Cuban club owner Rico, who drugs and drags Lola off to Cuba as a replacement for the aging Conchita. Tony and Sam later rescue Lola, and along the way the audience enjoys catchy tunes like Lola's "Who Needs to Dream" and Tony's "Sweet Heaven," along with bright dance routines - some, like "Bolero D'Amore," with a Latin flavor.

Although the plot is light, the tunes are bright, opening with "Copacabana" and following with "Dancing Fool" and "Sweet Heaven," Next is Lola's auditioning tune, "Man Wanted," which changes from old-fashioned torch song to a bright up-tempo version that wins Lola the job. Smartly transitioning from Oklahoma farm girl to New York Copa girl, Anderson proves vocally up to the challenge and equally adept with the demanding footwork. In her ASGT debut, she charms the audience, looks great in every costume, and conveys impressive acting skills in the dual roles of Lola and Stephen's wife, Samantha. As Samantha's husband, Stephen, and Lola's love interest, Tony, Bowen delivers another stellar performance. Seen in last season's "On the Town" and this season in "All Shook Up," Bowen maintains his good-natured energetic image while continuing to grow as a leading song-and-dance man, impressive in the demanding "Dancing Fool" and bringing nostalgic warmth to ballads "Who Needs to Dream" and "Sweet Heaven." As Tony and Stephen, Bowen has great chemistry with Anderson's Lola and Samantha.

Sergo makes a strong ASGT debut as street-smart Gladys, belting songs with verve while displaying strong acting, dancing and comedic skills. Cestone is also a strong ASGT debuting actor as club owner Sam. He is a commanding presence who makes the most of his unattractive wig's comic potential, rotating it and retrieving it adroitly and letting it fall from his bald pate to get even bigger laughs. Cestone is a gruff, lovable and funny Sam Silver. ASGT favorite Sweeney brilliantly brings drama and pathos to the role of aging showgirl Conchita, elevating her scenes with Lola and Rico into compelling drama and bringing flawless grace in her Latin dance moves. And Wallace is properly evil as Cuban mobster and rival club owner Rico... If you go: "Copacabana" continues Thursdays-Sundays through Sept. 5. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors and groups of 20. To reserve seats, call the box office at 410-268-9212 or go to summergarden.com. (Baltimore Sun, 8/16/2009)

  • Theater thriving on Manilow's 'Copacabana' - The show is based on Barry Manilow's hit disco-era song of the same name, and tells the tale of showgirl Lola La Mar. "I think with (Manilow's) music, some people feel like he's nerdy," explained Cimaglia, who also serves as dance captain for the show which opened earlier this month. "But others, it appeals to them." "My mom used to play Barry Manilow in the car," said Nicole Anderson of Baltimore, who is in her 20s and plays Lola. "I like it. It's fun music." Apparently, the general public feels the same way, because many of the ASGT performances have been sold out. Carolyn Kirby, ASGT president, said the troupe picked the musical because it's a great "song and dance" show, a genre ASGT traditionally does well with. Although it's based on Manilow's [1978] song, "Copacabana" is mainly set in 1947 and features original music, not his 1970s and '80s tunes. Kirby said she often listens to the crowd as they leave the theater, and has heard positive impressions about the show from people both young and old. There have even been some queries about the show and tickets from "fanilows," or diehard Manilow fans, who said they are excited about the performance, theater personnel said. "I've always had an appreciation for Barry Manilow (music)," said cast member Alicia Sweeney of Annapolis, who plays Conchita Alvarez in the show. "He writes the songs!" Director Jerry Vess, who grew up in the 1970s, isn't surprised by the positive response. He said the show offers some pure escapism during the recession. "With the economic times, you want a little escape," Vess explained, "and this is definitely a fun escape." "Copacabana" runs through Sept. 5 at the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre, 143 Compromise St. in Annapolis. For more information, call 410-268-9212 or visit the Web site at www.summergarden.com. • "Vs." is a rockin' time at Liberace Museum - Like the tetherball-sized rhinestone on display in the museum showroom, the showcases and cabaret performances at Liberace Museum just seem to grow in legend. Last night, it was for "Vs. A Rock Cabaret" at the warm-and-cozy Liberace Cabaret. The format of these monthly showcases hosted and produced by Ali Spuck and Keely Vasquez is simply inspired: Choose competing music genres and halve the performance to reflect those genres. Last night, the museum rocked as it never has as Spuck and Vasquez helped roll out "1967 vs. 1987." The '67 set played to the intermission, and '87 closed the show. Backed by the "Ultimate Manilow" band (music director and pianist Joey Melotti, Mike Lent on guitar, Ian Martin on bass, Russ McKinnon on drums, Ron Pedley on keyboards), the music selections were truly inspired ... It was a lot of music for a $25 ticket to the museum, and the room that seats 86 officially was overflowing with happy audience members. It's certainly a showroom-quality production, and the two producers say they are driven to take it to that level somewhere in Las Vegas ... Vasquez is a backing singer for Barry Manilow at the L.V. Hilton who as earned acclaim as a singer/actress in Chicago. After the show, as the buzzing audience left the museum, Vasquez said it was a challenge making the case to performers that it was worth all the work to put on the production. It's far more work than any open-mic night, requiring rehearsals and sound checks and the lugging of instruments. Reaching the general public, too, is not easy, she said, because "Nobody knows who we are." (Las Vegas Sun, 8/6/2009)
