  • Human Nature Announce New Vegas Album featuring Barry - Multi-platinum pop revivalists Human Nature promises a Las Vegas-styled album. The album is titled Vegas: Songs From Sin City, the first album since 2008’s A Symphony Of Hits, where they covered their own hits and others' with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Vegas is inspired by their two-year stint raking in the dough on the strip in Sin City with their 'Smokey Robinson presents Human Nature: The Ultimate Celebration of Motown' show. They’ve done a duet with Vegas stand-by Barry Manilow on a medley of "Mandy" and "[Could It] Be Magic" for the album. Other covers include Vegas staples such as "Viva Las Vegas," "The Lady Is A Tramp," "It’s Not Unusual," "Danke Schoen," and "Can’t Take My Eyes Off You." Andrew Tierney said via a press release, "Las Vegas has a musical history that is impossible to ignore and many of our musical idols have found fame and success on the strip. We have been incredibly lucky to find our own success in Las Vegas and we look forward to sharing our new sound, city and second home with our Australian fans through this album." Vegas: Songs From Sin City will be released on November 12. (Undercover News, 10/27/2010)

  • Human Nature’s debut CD a tribute to L.V., includes Manilow - Music superstar Barry Manilow has become such a big fan of Human Nature since both became Strip headliners that, Vegas DeLuxe has learned exclusively, he’s collaborated on their first U.S. album, and they celebrated its completion at Tryst in the Wynn over the weekend. The album was recorded at Studio in the Palms and features Las Vegas' own Fat City Horns. Andrew Tierney of Human Nature: "Our new record celebrates the musical legacy of Las Vegas. It's songs about Vegas made famous by Vegas or sung by iconic Vegas performers. Thus the title Vegas: Songs From Sin City. Barry sings a duet with us on our version of 'Could It Be Magic' and 'Mandy.' We were thrilled and honored to be joined by him. He is truly a legend. Barry is the only collaborating artist on the record. The album was produced by Harvey Mason Jr., who has recorded Dreamgirls, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Hudson and Whitney Houston. The album is a classic sound -- big horns, big arrangements and great vocals. It has our signature soulful harmonies, but pays homage to the distinct charm of these Vegas classics. We wanted to explore the musical legacy that is Vegas -- a pedigree we are humbled to be a tiny part of. We have taken these classics (along with AC/DC’s homage to the famed town) and reinvented them as though we were to give the best 'one night in Vegas' performance we could give. We had so much fun making these amazing songs our own. We think everybody needs a little Vegas in their life, and now they can!" Released in their native Australia on Nov. 19, the album will be sold exclusively at their theater in Imperial Palace before its U.S. release next year. (Las Vegas Weekly, 10/25/2010)

  • New on DVD, Ally McBeal: The Complete Fourth Season (2000, Fox) - Like most David E. Kelley series, "Ally" got increasingly ridiculous as it went along, but the show's fourth season got a real boost from the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Ally's (Calista Flockhart) love interest. Another highlight: a funny episode in which a melancholy Ally imagines she sees Barry Manilow everywhere she goes until she crosses paths with the real crooner and has a surprise reaction to his silly love songs. • Manilow Beats Buble and Cliff to Door2Tour.com's Concert Crown - Door2Tour.com's latest concert revenue figures show that Barry Manilow is set to outstrip the likes of super-smooth Michael Bublé, Daniel O'Donnell and even Brit legend Cliff Richard in terms of concert package sales to date. The coach holidays specialist (http://www.door2tour.com/) consolidator website has reported that currently gross sales for the American singer-songwriter, who is performing at the O2 arena in London for 4 nights next May, are just a whisker behind those for Cliff's 'Bold As Brass' 70th celebration tour, with Manilow just 1.5% away from becoming the company's all time top of the pops. Hotel and concert breaks for Manilow went on sale in July, and with an extra date now confirmed for 7th May it's likely that Barry will take the crown as the company's most popular concert act ever. The news is likely to go down well with avid Fanilows, whose idol has sold over 80 million records worldwide, won countless music awards and was revered by Frank Sinatra and Bob Dylan alike... • A cappella group Straight No Chaser gets big boost from going viral - Being part of a male a cappella group at Indiana University, Randy Stine never had any delusions that his hobby would develop into something more. The 10-member group had a decent run of it, though. After forming in 1996, they sang contemporary hits, performed on the road occasionally and even put out a few independent albums. In 2006, the group got together for a reunion, but not everyone could attend. Stine posted clips of old footage on YouTube so the absent members could view it. In two years, it got 100,000 hits. But in December 2007, it went viral, surpassing 200,000 hits, then 300,000. "By Christmas, we had over 6 million hits, it really moved quickly," Stine said. The attention prompted a call from an Atlantic Records representative. And that's when Stine realized things might change. Today, Straight No Chaser recently kicked off a 75-city tour of the U.S., which includes a Wednesday stop at the Civic Center. In April, the band released its third album [featuring] the track "One Voice," which the band recorded with Barry Manilow. The song came about after Straight No Chaser opened for Manilow at the Hollywood Bowl in 2009. "Barry just really took a liking to the group," original member Dan Ponce is quoted as saying. "We were just thrilled, because to have a legend like that on your album says a lot about how far our group has come." What: Straight No Chaser, 10-member male a cappella group. When: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Where: Peoria Civic Center Theater. Cost: $29, $35 and $42.50 at the Peoria Civic Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at (800) 745-3000 and online at Ticketmaster.com. (Journal Star [Peoria], 10/7/2010)

  • Copacabana, Dolman Theatre - The Dolman Theatre was transformed into that hottest nightspot, when The New Venture Players burst onto stage in their latest production, Copacabana. Colourful, vibrant and energetic, the Barry Manilow classic was tailor made for this talented company. In the capable hands of director, Gordon Collins, musical director Brian Weir and choreographer Abbie Gregory, a by-gone era of music, nightlife and glamour was effortlessy re-created. Aspiring songwriter Stephen, Ben Hurley, is penning his next big hit when he is carried back to the world famous Copacabana nightclub, where he launches hopeful showgirl Lola, Megan Fitzpatrick, on the road to stardom. Ben commands every scene, his confidence and experience drawing an equally memorable performance from 17 year old Megan in her debut performance for the company. Debbie Postle, who just grows with every production, gave her character Gladys, humour, warmth and verve, and along with Conchita, Joanne Symonds, Sam, James Stanford and Rico, Michael Lowe, provided the platform from which the lead couple could bounce. Well-disciplined, yet racy and up-beat, this is not to be missed. It runs until Saturday... (South Wales Argus, 9/30/2010)

  • Two autistic students perform Magik - The play is being performed as a tribute to parents and families of children with autism. "Ooooogy Green and Other Fables," is a play about a young caterpillar coming to realize "the things that make us different are the things that make us special." The play is from 6:30 p.m.-7:50 p.m. Saturday at the Magik Theatre, 420 S. Alamo St. on the western edge of HemisFair Park. Speech-language pathologist Celeste Mullen said the play is being put on as "a tribute to parents and families of children with autism." Along with the six cast members and crew from Los Angeles, two performers are students from this college who have high-functioning forms of autism called Asperger's syndrome. Theater freshman Garrett Tatum will serve as the master of ceremonies, and music freshman Dewayne Griggs II is a soloist. Paige, who makes her Atlantic City debut Saturday, Sept. 25, at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, is aiming to change that. She's been in the U.S. since July working with producer Phil Ramone on a new album of duets featuring an eclectic roster of guests, including Barry Manilow, Olivia Newton-John, Michael Bolton and Sinead O'Connor. • Elaine Paige, Britain's queen of musical theater, will perform her one-woman show 'Celebrating 40 Years on Stage' in Atlantic City. Saturday, September 25th, she travels from New York to make her Atlantic City debut at the Borgata with her one-woman show "Celebrating 40 Years on Stage." This is no mere concert. • Singer Lorna Luft will join the New West Pops for "Broadway Meets Hollywood - In Concert" at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Fred Kavli Theatre at Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. Tickets, $33-$63, can be purchased in person at the Civic Arts Plaza's box office or via Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or http://www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, call the Civic Arts Plaza at 449-2787 or visit http://www.civicartsplaza.com. Luft said she’ll be doing a 45-minute set with the orchestra. She views her part of the show as a tribute to the Broadway and Hollywood songs people know, as well as a tribute to her mother. Luft is the daughter of Judy Garland and producer Sid Luft, Garland’s third husband. "It took me a very long time to be comfortable with that legacy," Luft said. The pain and difficulty behind that was the reason Luft avoided approaching her mother’s songbook for so long. But early last decade, she did "Songs My Mother Taught Me - A Celebration of the Music of Judy Garland," a multimedia production. The stage show, she noted, was written and directed by Ken and Mitzie Welch, who’d done much work with Carol Burnett. The 2007 album based on it, Luft’s debut CD, came about in part, she said, because of an old friend - Barry Manilow. Manilow co-produced the album with her husband. "I felt so safe," Luft noted. Manilow, a friend for more than 40 years, understood she couldn’t do the album when she was younger. When she was finally ready, Luft recalled, "I called up Barry and I was expecting this long-winded discussion. And all I got out of him was, 'It's about time.'" (Ventura County Star, 9/17/2010)

  • Manilow on the move with Lightswitch - When Barry Manilow moved his hit show from the Las Vegas Hilton to the Paris Las Vegas for a new two-year residency, the production team wanted to make a few changes to better reflect and adapt to their new home. To do so, they brought in lighting designer Chris Medvitz of Lightswitch to create an intimate yet powerful lighting design. Lightswitch then enlisted the assistance of PRG and 65 Vari*Lite luminaires from Philips Vari-Lite. "When the production was moved from the Las Vegas Hilton to the Paris Las Vegas, everyone wanted to create a new look and feel for the show so that they could really compete against the larger Vegas shows that were established on the strip," says Medvitz. "Barry had never done a theatrical-type show before, so they felt this was a great opportunity to capitalize on the intimate 1500-seat Paris Théâtre." Over the next several months the production team began to discuss, sketch and create the exact design concepts desired. It was then up to Medvitz to take those concepts and weave then into a complementary lighting design. "Barry wanted this show to have an abstract artistic theme, but they didn't want it to be cliché. They also wanted to use timeless art pieces that would connect throughout the show; therefore we knew video would play a big role in the production. But since we were now in a traditional theatrical setting, the lighting had to have a theatrical feel to it as opposed to a concert feel." (L&SI Online News, 9/9/2010)

  • MDA Telethon Exceeds Expectations - After 21-1/2 hours of great entertainment and powerful appeals, the final timpani rolled and confetti fell on the 2010 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon which raised $58,919,838 in contributions and pledges to advance the research and service programs of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. "I’m heartened by the unique ability of Americans to help others in need, when they themselves are likely struggling financially," said Lewis. "People see the progress MDA is making for children and adults living with muscle diseases. I’m truly grateful for their caring enough to brighten the future for 'my kids'." The Telethon originated for the fifth year from the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas, reaching some 40 million viewers by way of MDA’s Telethon network of some 170 television stations, as well as cable throughout the United States and Canada. Millions more around the world saw the Telethon at www.mda.org courtesy of RealNetworks. "For the first time ever, the Telethon opened with the stage set for one child, MDA National Goodwill Ambassador Abbey Umali," said Gerald C. Weinberg, MDA president & CEO and Telethon executive producer. There was not a dry eye in the house as MDA National Goodwill Ambassador Abbey Umali sang "Ordinary Miracle." Umali, the first youngster to ever open the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, was unflappable as she warmed Telethon Co-host Jann Carl by making an immediate heartfelt appeal following her performance. Abbey encouraged America to give generously to help advance the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s lifesaving mission. After 11-year-old Umali said "now on with the show," the stage was immediately filled with tap dancers choreographed by Tyce Diorio – followed by a host of performers including Barry Manilow, David Archuleta, Enrique Iglesias, Michael Feinstein, Maureen McGovern, John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting, and Charo; groups Lynyrd Skynyrd, WAR, OneRepublic and The Oak Ridge Boys; Las Vegas productions "Viva Elvis by Cirque du Soleil," "Jersey Boys" and "Vegas! The Show"; Broadway segments from "Memphis," "Rock of Ages" and "Million Dollar Quartet"; and the cast of the television show "Glee," as well as a host of others. Telethon co-hosts included Alison Sweeney, Nancy O’Dell and Jann Carl – as well as special guest co-hosts Nigel Lythgoe, Richard Belzer, Ace Young, Brandon Barash, John Pinette and Billy Gilman. • Dublin teacher set to sing at Manilow gig - A Dublin teacher will take the stage in the O2 in London to sing alongside US star Barry Manilow. Richard Smith, from Darndale, was invited to join the legendary singer at the prestigious arena following his stellar performance on BBC's Tonight's The Night last Saturday. The hugely popular series, presented by former Desperate Housewives star and singer John Barrowman, gives a few lucky participants once-in-a-lifetime chances to perform on TV with help from some world famous singers. The latest installment saw religious education teacher Richard jet over to Las Vegas for a masterclass with Mr. Manilow before wowing a studio audience with his version of the singer's hit "Mandy" ... "This entire experience has been very surreal. I flew over to Las Vegas in mid-July to film with Barry. It was amazing. He was so humble and very nice. We got to sing about five songs together before choosing 'Mandy' for my performance on the show. Barry left me a message after the show aired inviting me to be his guest at the O2 in May and he said, 'We'll sing again' so I can't wait to take to the stage. I'm going to hold him to it." • Kings Heath RE teacher Richard Smith to perform on Tonight's The Night - A POPULAR Birmingham teacher will prove his talents extend far beyond the classroom – when he takes centre stage on TV tonight. Religious education teacher Richard Smith, aged 37, is on Tonight’s The Night, hosted by John Barrowman. As part of his prize on the show – which he described as “a cross between Surprise, Surprise and Jim’ll Fix It” – Richard was even flown to Las Vegas for a private singing lesson with none other than superstar crooner Barry Manilow. Richard, who teaches at Bishop Challoner Catholic College, in Kings Heath, was crowned the region’s Voice of the Millennium in a Birmingham Mail-backed competition in 1999. He said: “Barry was such a lovely guy, very warm and giving of advice. He took me through a few of his songs and told me how he’d sing them. At one point my mind just went blank when the realisation set in that there I was, on Barry Manilow’s stage, with him playing on the piano! It was amazing.” Richard was nominated for the show by a friend keen to shine the light on his talent and all the work he has done for charity. The Dublin-born former music teacher managed to raise £10,000 in one night for Indian organisation Ashadeep through a concert at Birmingham Town Hall in January. Staff at the school helped set the stage for John Barrowman’s surprise visit to tell Richard he was going to appear on the show. Richard, who has been singing since he was four, said: “We were in the drama school, supposedly filming the students for a video we were sending off to a competition based around the TV show Glee. The choreographer seemed a bit odd and kept asking me to join in. The next thing I knew I looked around and there was John holding my arm! This whole experience has been a gift and I’m so grateful.” (Birmingham Mail, 8/7/2010)

  • A glittering tour de force: Copacabana at The Watermill until September 4 - The audience is promised high-kicking showgirls and glittering glamour – and Copacabana certainly delivers. Craig Revel Horwood has returned to The Watermill to sink his creative teeth into Barry Manilow’s hit musical. After being drawn into the imagination of composer Stephen, the audience is whisked off to post-war New York where the painfully green Lola tries to forge a career in showbusiness and melts the heart of barman and musician Tony. But after being hired as a showgirl at the famous Copacabana club, her luck runs out as Lola catches the eye of a crooked customer whose intentions are entirely dishonourable. There are some fantastic sequences, such as a male tap dancing number that simply bursts with energy, and the passionate Bolero D’Amore which brings the first half to a steamy close. This sequence is visually stunning, with two dancing couples dressed in black flanking Lola in a bright red dress, as she is kidnapped by the cruel, darkly-clad Rico ... Copacabana is a thoroughly entertaining night out at the theatre with music and passion and plenty of fashion. (Basingstoke Gazette, 8/4/2010)

  • Copacabana opens at The Watermill - A drum beats, down the aisle sways a tall, glamorous girl in the briefest of glittering costumes, to be followed by a songwriter in T-shirt and scruffy jeans. One by one the actor/musicians of Copacabana filter on to the stage and suddenly the glitz hits the music and we are back in 1947 New York at the famous Copacabana nightclub, and the pace is hot. A brief scene follows with songwriter Stephen (Edward Baker-Duly) at the piano, searching for inspiration, while wife Samantha (Laura Pitt-Pulford) nags at him from the shower above. What follows is a dream and Stephen and Samantha metamorphose into Tony, who works at the Copacabana, and Lola, a country girl from Tulsa, set on becoming one of the nightclub’s showgirls. Hilarious auditions get Lola nowhere until Tony takes over and updates the raunchy "Man Wanted" number so successfully that she not only gets the job but is kidnapped by gangster Rico (Antony Reed) to appear in his Havana nightclub, the Tropicana. Copacabana is a show with dance as the main character and costumes a close second. It is steamy, glittering, fast – as Karen Mann (Gladys, the ex-Copacabana showgirl in a costume which reminded me of an ostrich) says: "That tempo will give you a hysterectomy" ... As you’d expect with Craig Revel Horwood directing, the dance routines are polished and tight – loved the lads in "Dancing Fool." There was excellent acting throughout, with Laura Pitt-Pulford combining naivety with showgirl-glam superbly, Edward Baker-Duly getting it exactly right as the guy who loves her and Basienka Blake (Conchita) nicely combining elegance with pathos and pizzazz. Comedy came from Karen Mann’s Gladys and the be-toupéed Julian Littman as Sam, manager of the Copacabana, a vociferous pairing which had the audience laughing time and again. Barry Manilow’s music, brilliantly arranged by Sarah Travis for this clever cast, stands the test of time and, combined with CRH’s direction and choreography, make this another potential hit for the successful team. • Copacabana: The Watermill Theatre, Bagnor, near Newbury - How much toothpaste can you squeeze out of a tube? It’s a question you could well ask about the Barry Manilow musical Copacabana. Starting life as a catchy single in 1978, "Copacabana" went on to become a TV movie, then an hour-long stage show. Finally it was extended into a three-hour musical extravaganza in 1994. If anyone can capitalise on the full-length show it is surely the Watermill’s dream team of director/choreographer Craig Revel Horwood and music arranger Sarah Travis ... The show is set first in the Copa nightclub in New York, then in the Tropicana, Havana. At the Copa, harassed manager Sam (Julian Littman) auditions wide-eyed, innocent Lola, newly arrived from "Tulsa, Okla." The audition is a disaster — until cool, handsome Copa songwriter and dancer Tony (Edward Baker-Duly) gets involved. Result: Lola is hired, and falls instantly in love with Tony. All is well until thoroughly nasty Rico (Antony Reed) turns up. Rico, an Italian gangster, is in town to "visit his Godfather," and finger fresh talent for the Tropicana, which he owns. In tow is now-waning Tropicana star Conchita (Basienka Blake) ... Copacabana continues until September 4. Tickets: 01635 46044 or online at www.watermill.org.uk. (Oxford Times, 7/21/2010)

  • Frank Loesser's Centennial Compilation "Heart and Soul" - Frank Loesser, who died of lung cancer on July 28, 1969, would have turned 100 on June 29. Various centennial offerings include "Heart and Soul: Celebrating the Unforgettable Songs of Frank Loesser." And they are indeed unforgettable, although only a fraction of his work is represented in the 19 tracks included in this album from Masterworks Broadway (available as a digital download, or as a disc-on-demand from Arkivmusic.com). We needn't walk through all the included songs, most of which come from Loesser's Hollywood catalogue. There are six show tunes, the Jule Styne hit ("I Don't Want To Walk Without You"); "Heart and Soul," for which Hoagy Carmichael wrote a tune; Hoagy's "Two Sleepy People," from Della Reese; and two self-composed hits, "Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year" (from Sarah Vaughan) and the 1950 Oscar-winner "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (from Pearl Bailey and Hot Lips Page). Other performers include Dinah Shore, Johnny Mathis, Doris Day, Michele Lee (singing "I Believe in You") and even Barry Manilow (singing "Luck Be a Lady"). (Playbill.com, 7/11/2010)

  • Orchestra creates a solid beat - The Glendale Renaissance Orchestra started the second concert of its inaugural season with a strong beat set firmly by (former arranger/conductor for Barry Manilow) Victor Vanacore, guest conductor for a night of pops music. Vanacore and his group of five backup musicians and two singers melded smoothly with the mostly pickup local freelancers that made up the Renaissance Orchestra. The good-sized crowd enjoyed the outdoor concert from seats located in the Americana central park to hear a scrapbook of pops hits that straddled 60 years with music arranged by the conductor ... With a solid beat from drummer Simon Carroll, the program opened with Barry Manilow's "Bandstand Boogie" featuring singers Alexx Daye and Tony Galla. Vanacore has presented this program around the country with some of the nation's leading symphonic orchestras. His traveling corps of musicians included Jim Studer, keyboard; Lou Schoch, bass; Simon Carroll, drums; Victor Vanacore III, Latin percussion; and Thom Rotella, jazz guitar. • Salute to Frank Loesser - Today, in honor of centennial of Frank Loesser, we are taking an exclusive First Listen to the Masterworks Broadway release of "HEART & SOUL: Celebrating The Unforgettable Songs Of Frank Loesser" ... This instantly collectable and relatively comprehensive collection of Loesser songs - mostly the famous ones, but also a few welcome obscurities and esoterica - is an excellent crash-course in Loesser revealing the three faces of Frank - fearless, fragile and, well, frank. For sure, the producers have certainly culled from the creme de la creme with these absolutely sensational performers, each of whom is certainly the cream at the top of the cream of the crop. These four simply beyond-compare ladies must be mentioned right off the bat: Pearl Bailey, Della Reese, Sarah Vaughn and Doris Day. Throw in Vic Damone, Johnny Mathis and Barry Manilow - among many others - and you have a combustible combination of epic greatest hit album proportions as far as the great American songbook goes. All of these performers I’ve named are so very different, but all supremely gifted and talented artists all the same proving themselves ideal interpreters of the jazzy mini-masterpieces that came from the pen of Loesser throughout his lengthy career. This collection gives us just a taste of Loesser’s output, but in each bite presented we may savor the adept artistry and unsurpassed ingenuity of his compositional output. Plus, his songs are just plain fun and entertaining. All of that at once? Indeed, indeed. Indeed, seems there are three sides to Frank Loesser: the caustic; the sentimental; and the showman. Sarcasm, sentiment and showbiz razzmatazz all get equal time to shine on this exemplery example of how to do a greatest hits album totally right while preserving the through-line of the central figure’s career trajectory. Whatever face we face of Frank’s is a surefire score ... Barry Manilow offers a bombastic blast of "Luck Be A Lady" from GUYS & DOLLS ... Never will a Loesser collection contain quite as many marvelous master-works in one place than this careful, considerate and compulsively addicting album from Sony Masterworks Broadway. It is truly something to cherish, especially on this momentous centennial day. More I cannot have wished for than this, nor to share my enthusiasm for this album with you! A tip of the hat - and this one’s for you, Frank! (Broadway World, 6/29/2010)
