  • Las Vegas Hilton Selects Lodging Management System From Agilysys - LMS is an integrated property management software system ... The Las Vegas Hilton is using the system for ticketing at the 1,638-seat Hilton Theater ... "In addition to a property management system, we needed a complete suite of applications to allow us to remain competitive in the market," said Marc Guarino, vice president of information technology for the Las Vegas Hilton. "With our recent signing of Barry Manilow to a long-term engagement, we needed a ticketing system that would allow us not only to handle large volumes of ticket purchases at the property, but also give us the ability to sell tickets on the Internet. As the Las Vegas Hilton continues to bring big name entertainers to Las Vegas, we are confident that we have the proper systems in place to offer our customers high levels of service." (Yahoo! • Barry best friend - Every announcement needs a celebrity in this valley and Suzanne Somers fulfilled that role ably Tuesday at the McCallum Theatre's season-unveiling party. "It's always so fantastic to be on this stage," said the multi-dimensional Palm Springs resident ... Her McCallum concert, scheduled for March 17-18 of next year, will be just for fun ... Suzanne loves throwing local parties. She has a natural amphitheater carved out of the rocks in her South Palm Springs back yard and friends often get up to sing. Not long after Sept. 11, 2001, she had a jazz band performing in that amphitheater and Michael Feinstein sang and played piano. Then Jack Jones got up and sang. Then Merv Griffin, Robert Goulet, Keely Smith and Susan Anton got up and sang. Then, Barry Manilow sang "Copacabana." "People are still talking to me about that evening," Suzanne said. "It was one of those great nights you couldn't plan." Suzanne's best pal is Manilow. She likes the fact that she can go virtually unnoticed with him because Barry "sucks the air out of the room" with his presence. She still can't believe the gift he gave her last Christmas. Suzanne was rehearsing to a music disc her conductor had recorded and Barry decided she needed more material. "He did about 50 arrangements of songs he thought would be good for my voice in my key," she said. "He sang them in my key and then he did a second demo so I could sing with it. And I sing to Barry Manilow playing his arrangements for me in my key!" (The Desert Sun, 4/3/2005)

  • Bette Midler can sing and act, but what does she do best? Even after all this time, she can't decide... For the most part though, her vocal talents have been seen as secondary to her acting. Although not by anyone who has treasured their copy of her 1972 debut album "The Divine Miss M" all these years ... Working with pianist Barry Manilow, she was able to hone her skills across a vast array of material, from show tunes to blues and girl-group numbers, the basis for "The Divine Miss M" ... Bette Midler's Kiss My Brass tour opens its Australian run at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Boondall, on April 8. The show features a moving tribute to one of her favourite people, the late Rosemary Clooney. This follows her reunion with Barry Manilow to make the 2003 album, "Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook." "[Rosemary] was a friend of mine and I just loved her. She was a lovely human being and she also had one of the great classic pop voices. When Barry asked me to do it, I thought, 'He's not in his right mind'. But the main thing is I got the chance to sing all those songs and to talk about her a little bit and raise people's consciousness of her." (The Courier-Mail, 3/19/2005)

  • At the copa... Copacabana! - Antoinette McCann is going to find herself caught in a rather suspicious situation at Belfast's Grand Opera House this week. She'll be spotted by the audience kneeling over the body of her husband, John McMichael - smoking revolver in hand. Antoinette plays showgirl Conchita in Barry Manilow's Copacabana, while John is Rico, the gangster who owns the Tropicana Nightclub where she dances. It's going to be a special run for both of the newlyweds - the first time they have appeared on stage together since the nuptials early last year. Said John: "We have worked together many times during our courtship, but this is our first venture as man and wife. We will have a new understanding in the spotlight, wait til you see!" Antoinette, a music teacher, added: "Whether I'm the one who actually fired the shot remains to be seen." Copacabana, which has been around for 10 years, is hot again and versions of it are being produced across the UK - much to Manilow's delight - with songs like "Dancin' Fool" and "Sweet Heaven" and the tales of another showgirl, called Lola. There are still tickets available at the Opera House ticket shop. (Belfast Telegraph, 3/14/2005)

  • Manilow Embraces Cowell Rejects - Teen triplets rejected by Simon Cowell on American Idol recently have quickly gone on to bigger and better things - Barry Manilow has asked them to open his Las Vegas show. On Thursday (Feb 24), the "Mandy" star kicked off his show in the American gambling capital, and after hearing that 18-year-old blondes Mandy, Erin and Melissa Maynard failed to impress Idol judge Cowell - who branded them "three overweight Jessica Simpsons" - Manilow has taken them under his wing. • Copacabana in Bowling Green, Ohio - The Black Swamp Players get out the conga drums and put on their Carmen Miranda hats tonight for the opening of Barry Manilow's Copacabana: The Musical. The show essentially follows Manilow's song about a Copacabana show girl named Lola; her lover, Tony; Rico, the sinister owner of the Tropicana nightclub in Havana, who abducts Lola, and Conchita, Rico's jealous lover and the star of the Tropicana, whom Rico wants to replace with Lola. Other principals are Sam, the owner of the Copacabana, and Gladys, Sam's sweetie, both of whom provide the comic relief. The story of Lola, Tony, Rico, and Conchita takes place in the imagination of Stephen, a writer, who is modeling Lola after his wife, Samantha ... "Copacabana: The Musical" opens tonight and runs through Feb. 27 in the First United Methodist Church theater, 1506 East Wooster St., Bowling Green. (Toledo Blade, 2/18/2005)

  • SO WHO has a big feature piece in Newsweek and is referred to as "hot"? - Why, Barry Manilow, that's who! His "farewell" tour last year sold out across the country (Oprah, that barometer of pop culture cravings, cited Manilow as one of her most requested guests). In Las Vegas Feb.23, he'll launch "Manilow: Music and Passion." This show, at the Hilton, will stick around for at least two years. His contract is long-term, as is Barry, who has survived the slings and arrows of music "sophisticates" to have the last hearty laugh. (Newsday.com, 2/10/2005)

  • We all deserve a little romance - I have been lucky enough to interview Barry Manilow on several occasions. In our earliest conversation he made a comment that has stuck with me. We were discussing why he thought his love songs were so popular and he said, "Everyone wants to find love. Everyone can relate to a love song or a love story because it's in all of us. The problem is we don't always find it -- but we have to keep looking." He went on to say that being a hopeless romantic is a frustrating waste of time -- but being a hopeful romantic is just about the best thing in the world. It's a philosophy he has repeated from the stage throughout his career. And it's a philosophy that I believe keeps magic in any relationship -- be it just begun, just for fun or a serious commitment to only one... - Jan Perry (Cincinnati Post, 2/14/2005)

  • Let's face it, New Year's Eve is practically a festival of pressure ... This swirl of anxiety inspired a song of the season: "It's Just Another New Year's Eve," copyrighted in 1977 by pop singer Barry Manilow and his longtime lyricist, Marty Panzer. "Barry called and said, 'You know, there's no New Year's Eve song that tells how people really feel,'" Panzer recalled from his Los Angeles home. The two agreed it should be a contemplative ballad: Sometimes life is a struggle, but we should be happy making it through another year. "We literally wrote the song in 48 hours from the time he called," Panzer said, with Manilow creating the melody and Panzer penning the lyrics. "He recorded it live in concert 48 hours later." The platinum record of "It's Just Another New Year's Eve" now hangs on Panzer's wall. The lyrics, in part: We've made mistakes; But we've made good friends too: Remember all the nights we spent with them? And all our plans; Who says they can't come true? Tonight's another chance to start again. "It's one of our favorite songs" of the dozens of hits the two have created, Panzer added. (Newhouse News Service, 12/16/2004)

"When Barry and myself wrote this song, we thought it would be a novelty cut on an album. It's amazing to think of the life this song has had," Mr. Sussman told AP. I couldn't hear the audience, either - there's no roof, and the sound just goes up into the sky." (Rocky Mountain News, 11/5/2004)

In April, the famed showman (and former Bette Midler sideman), released the double-disc "2 NightsLive," which features Manilow breathing life into such soft-rock classics as "Mandy," "Forever and a Day" and high ball and tux anthem "Copacabana (At the Copa)." 9 p.m. today, St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. • Smart Marketing! - Ah, the good ol' days of advertising slogans and taglines. "You deserve a break today." ... Some of the biggest slogans in the '70s were written by Barry Manilow, along with a jingle he sang about KFC's "finger-lickin' good" chicken ... The point of a tagline is to represent your brand image while providing something the consumer hums or remembers. (Appleton Post-Crescent, 10/25/2004)

  • Q&A with Bette Midler - Q. What was it like to hear from your old accompanist, Barry Manilow, who called you to collaborate on a Rosemary Clooney tribute album? A. I was very surprised because our relationship had been quite fractious. I never really expected to hear from him again. But once we started working together, it was as if we had never stopped. He always gets the best performances out of me 'cause he won't take no for an answer. (Time Magazine, 10/25/2004)

"It's a compilation of songs by artists who have been on the show," says McCormack, who wrote the words to the final cut, "Living With Grace," in about 48 hours. • Barry Manilow is still hip and cool - The veteran crooner is constantly checking out new bands and is completely clued up on the latest hot acts. The I Wanna Do It With You star says: "The Scissor Sisters? I was one of the first people in California to have that CD. Franz Ferdinand. Bought it weeks ago. Tell me honestly, am I not the hippest man on this planet? What it all comes down to is taste. I have good taste. And I don't even mind terrible taste. What I can't stand is all the stuff in between. Mediocrity is offensive to me, and we're living in a world awash with it, where the popular arts are concerned." (Online.ie, 10/22/2004)

  • Barry Manilow at The Palace - This farewell-tour stop could mark the final area appearance for Manilow, capping a long Detroit run that goes back 30 years to nights at the Masonic Temple as pianist for a little-known Bette Midler. It's an all-hits show - good news for the star's famously devoted fanbase, who will witness a concert by a man who has recently embraced a refreshingly lighthearted view of his oft-maligned body of schmaltz. 8 p.m., the Palace, I-75 at Exit 81. 248-377-0100. $39.50-$89.50. • Manilow Pities Britney - Barry Manilow can relate to the pressure Britney Spears is under because he has been there himself. The veteran crooner says he suffered many of the same problems as the wild child newlywed when he was starting out. "Isn't she mixed up? Too much pressure, much too young. I feel for her. I was there myself once - though not with such an amazing body." But Manilow confesses he's not Spears' greatest fan: "I don't get the songs, but she's very beautiful." (ContactMusic.com, 10/21/2004)

  • Manilow chooses local woman to help sing duet - Linda Hensley is not a Barry Manilow groupie, but that hasn't stopped the Indianapolis woman from being a fan; she's been to four of the singer's concerts in his long career. So, when Hensley, 48, scored some on-the-aisle tickets for his Columbus, Ohio, concert Saturday, she considered herself lucky just to have a great seat. Little did she know she was headed for the spotlight. Manilow concerts traditionally include a point when he brings a woman from the audience up on stage to help sing his classic "Can't Smile Without You." You guessed it: He grabbed Hensley's hand for the duet! Manilow's staff sent her a videotape, and she'd probably be happy to show it to you... (Indianapolis Star, 10/20/2004)
