  • Short Spins: Barry Manilow, Scores (Concord) - Manilow's own renditions of songs he wrote or co-wrote for the major stage musicals "Copacabana" and "Harmony." You get exactly what you'd expect; well-crafted songs rich with melody - to borrow an expression from Frank Zappa, it's "a little bit cheesy, but it's nicely displayed." Manilow is in fine voice, Lola is still a showgirl at the Copa, and all is right in the world. (Buffalo News, 10/8/2004)

  • Greenville woman meets music, television idols on 'Oprah' - For Candace Bolt of Greenville, two icons stand larger than life: one, the original woman-power talk show host (Oprah Winfrey); the other, Barry Manilow. Bolt's admiration for Oprah is rivaled only by her love for 1970s pop balladeer. To meet either of them would be a dream come true. To meet both at the same time ... well, that would be the theme of Oprah's show that aired Wednesday afternoon (9/15/2004). Bolt was the lucky featured guest, given an exclusive serenade by her favorite singer, with Oprah, her new best buddy, at her side. "It was like I was having an out-of-body experience," says Bolt, who fulfilled her lifelong dream on Monday when she expected to be seated with her husband, Jim, as just another audience member during the show's taping. Last Thursday, Jim received word from "Oprah" producers that they wanted to fly the two of them to Chicago on Sunday to appear for a taping on Monday. Only vague reasons were given. It all started with a suggestive e-mail. "Dear Oprah," it read, "my husband knows that if he could ever arrange for me to meet Oprah Winfrey and a 'certain famous singer' at the same time, he would get 'sex on command' for the rest of his life!" The Bolts sat clueless in a conference room as the audience was seated. As the ushers came, the couple was told they were being escorted to their seats in the audience. "We were totally snowed," Candace says. As they entered the tunnel Oprah emerges from at the beginning of each show, they began to wonder. As they emerged in the studio in front of a typically raucous crowd and Oprah motioned for them to come join her onstage, they knew something special was in the works. Then, he came. He sang. He conquered a partisan audience. Manilow serenaded Candace with a variation of his hit "Looks Like We Made It," retooled into "Looks Like He Made It," a reference to the e-mail that Oprah read as the couple sat in the conference room. "I look like the biggest dork," she says with a big laugh. "I guess that's the price you pay to be on 'Oprah'." Jim is reassuring: "A lot of people are closet Manilow fans," he says. "People like him but they won't admit it." Barry Manilow has this effect on people; you either love him or hate him. But in her moment, surrounded by a sorority of those who proclaim from the mountaintops their love for the singer, there were no cynics, no doubters. Just Oprah sitting next to her, her arm around her shoulder, singing along. (GreenvilleOnline.com, 9/15/2004)

  • Manilow Boosts Couple's Sex Life - Barry Manilow worked wonders for a couple's marriage when he agreed to meet a superfan, who had promised her husband "sex on demand for the rest of his life" if she could meet her hero. The singer was the surprise guest on an Oprah Winfrey Show (9/15/2004) when he performed before a studio audience full of fans. But he made one husband of a fan called Candace particularly happy after hearing that she had written to Oprah promising her husband Jim sex on demand if she could meet Manilow. The crooner then performed songs requested by audience members after airing a film, during which he surprised a host of his fans who had written to Oprah in an effort to meet Manilow. For the CD, Manilow refused to steal McCormack's thunder. "We tried a duet, but the lyrics are so personal, it sounded like I was intruding. So we took me out." Now THAT's grace! • Brian d'Arcy James and Pals Begin Harmony Workshop Aug. 9 - The boys of Harmony, the new Barry Manilow/Bruce Sussman musical about the Comedian Harmonists singing group, begin vocalizing Aug. 9 in rehearsals for a workshop of the Broadway-aimed show. The full company begins rehearsals Aug. 16. Private industry presentations are Sept. 9-10. The Weimar-era singing group, which splintered as the Nazis rose to power, is recreated by Brian d'Arcy James, David Turner, David Ayers, Thom Christopher Warren, Bradley Dean and Aaron Lazar. All but Ayers were rehearsed and ready for a pre-Broadway run in Philadelphia in late 2003 when the show's producer announced he didn't have enough money to bring the show to life. The production and its hopes for Broadway shut down immediately. Composer Manilow and lyricist-librettist Sussman fought in 2004 to regain control of their material and did. Now, new producers are shepherding the musical memory play to a potential commercial life. Stephen R. Buntrock was not available to recreate his 2003 work in this current workshop. Also returning under David Warren's direction are Kate Baldwin (as Mary, wife to James' character, Rabbi) and Janine LaManna (as Ruth, wife of Chopin, played by Ayers). (Playbill.com, 8/2/2004)

  • Harmony Is Back in Business as a Broadway-Bound Musical - Harmony, the once-Broadway-bound musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, is now back on a Broadway track with a new producing team, a fresh design and a refocused script. Rehearsals for a four-week workshop begin Aug. 9, reuniting most of the company that rehearsed the show in late 2003 [including] Brian d'Arcy James, Janine LaManna, Kate Baldwin, David Turner and Aaron Lazar. Also in the workshop will be Bradley Dean and Thom Christopher Warren, who were Harmonists in 2003. David Warren again directs. David Chase returns as musical director. The new producing team is Coats Guiles and Daniel Karslake of the Atticus Group, Beth Smith, Tara Schoen Fishman. Emanuel Azenberg is the general manager. Harmony is based on the real-life tale of the Comedian Harmonists, a vocal group in Germany in the 1920s and '30s, around the time Hitler was rising to power. Music is by Manilow, book and lyrics by Sussman. Private industry presentations take place Sept. 9 and 10 in Manhattan. Guiles said the show is aiming for a spring 2005 run. Since late 2003, the creative team has made the show "less literal, more theatrical." Scenic designer Derek McLane has reconceived the look of the show. "It's a memory piece, so it's abstract," Guiles said. (Playbill.com, 8/2/2004)

  • Michael Feinstein is committed to singing on a Barry Manilow project - that sets recently unearthed Johnny Mercer lyrics to music by the "Copacabana" and "Mandy" scribe. "There are so many recordings that I hope to make over the next several years, it's hard settling on any one. Barry Manilow has this cache of really wonderful songs he wrote to Johnny Mercer's lyrics... Between the craft (of Mercer) and a solid and imaginative writer (in Manilow), it makes these quite special. I very much want to do that project, and I'm flattered Barry asked me to sing them and help introduce them to the world." (PacketOnLine, 5/13/2004)

  • New York City Rhythms, the musical, is getting its world premiere at the Josephine Theater (April 16 - May 16). The show, written by Ross Ruediger, focuses on Gerry Flash (Thomas Miller), who headlines in the nightclub of the Manilow Hotel in Manhattan. He shares the spotlight with Amanda Hart (Cassie LaBeau), who has been nursing a secret crush on him for some time. He's clueless about Amanda's feelings, partly because he's still hung up on Linda (Melissa Etheredge), his former fiance, who dumped him four years ago because she felt he loved his music more than her. As it happens, Linda and her new beau, Martin ("American Idol" finalist Jonathan Jones) plan to spend New Year's Eve in the hotel. Naturally, the former lovers cross paths, and most of the show revolves around whether they're each willing to give the other a second chance. The story is told partly through Manilow hits such as "I Write the Songs," "Looks Like We Made It," "Copacabana," and "Something's Coming Up." (San Antonio Express-News, 4/14/2004)

  • Critics' picks for Jan. 9-15 - Diane Schuur at Rossi's, Downtown Minneapolis (January 14 & 15): In the past couple of years, newly born jazzman Barry Manilow made a jazz CD, helped Bette Midler with her Rosemary Clooney tribute disc and teamed up with Diane Schuur for a jazz collection, "Midnight." Make that a Manilow jazz collection. He wrote the songs that she sings. They're mostly old-fashioned and down-tempo, and, as producer, he managed to rein in Schuur's brassiness. After 25 years in the business, she shows subtlety here. (Star-Tribune Minneapolis-St. Paul, 1/9/2004)
