  • Hollywood Bowl Opens for One Night to Host Richard Weitz’s Zoom Concert - The pandemic concert series, a Hollywood hit, pushed past a new milestone over the weekend by raising north of $3 million, with Saturday's funds directed toward Youth Orchestra Los Angeles and No Kid Hungry. Minutes after 4 p.m. Saturday, Richard and Demi Weitz sat next to each other facing the same computer screen as they readied, for a 10th time, to co-host "Quarantunes," their pandemic Zoom concert series. The series started two months ago as a way to celebrate Demi’s 17th birthday with a little music and some industry friends but Richard, a partner at WME, soon realized his Rolodex could serve a new purpose during unprecedented times.

He asked performers -- singers, songwriters, musicians, Broadway stars and so on -- to join the events from wherever they were in the world and do a song or three for an invite-only audience. Over the course of nine shows, $2.6 million has been raised for a roster of nonprofits in need during the COVID-19 crisis, caused by the novel coronavirus. More than 100 artists said yes to joining the series, including John Legend, Sting, Barry Manilow and John Mayer, while a long list of Hollywood stars, studio chiefs, insiders and creatives looked on from their respective homes.

Richard promised Saturday’s show would be something special for Memorial Day weekend, but details were scant as they never reveal a lineup in advance ... Demi switched backdrops to reveal they were broadcasting live from the empty 17,500-seat amphitheater in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood, opened exclusively for the fundraising initiative. Richard unmuted the Zoom audience which, by that point, had grown to its maximum capacity of 1000 viewers, a first for "Quarantunes" -- for good cause ... The spirit in the Zoom chat box exploded when Richard announced another special guest -- music superstar ... “Billie Eilish has always been ahead of her time, and she is so friggin smart,” says Mayor Garcetti in surprise appearance during Richard Weitz’s Hollywood Bowl show.

Richard could barely contain his excitement to introduce the next performer who was the only act to perform on site: Kenny Loggins. "Now I can say I played the Hollywood Bowl," Loggins commented after his performance, which included the Caddyshack theme "I'm Alright," "Danger Zone," "Conviction of the Heart" and "Footloose."

Saturday proved to be yet another four-hour marathon concert. Beck performed "Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime" and a cover of Prince’s "Raspberry Beret"; Bryan Adams turned out "Cuts Like a Knife"; Elvis Costello contributed "Alison" and "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding"; The Killers showed up in a sleek black-and-white video with "Caution" and a Tom Petty cover of "The Waiting"; Styx star Dennis DeYoung, a return guest in a USC sweatshirt, performed "Lady," "Come Sail Away" and "Babe"; Gloria Gaynor sang "I Will Survive"; Carlos Santana and wife Cindy performed "Black Magic Woman" and "Europa" from Hawaii; Rob Thomas followed them with a string of hits including his Santana collab “Smooth”; and Seal took time out of a house party to perform a never-heard-before original song followed by "Crazy" and "Kiss From a Rose."

Manilow, who called the Bowl one of his favorite venues in the world, returned to "Quarantunes" to perform once again from his home, this time with "When the Good Times Come Again" (a resurgent hit during the pandemic) and the Richard-requested "Weekend in New England." Super fan Amy Adams hit the chat to say, "Crying. Thank you." There were appearances by Hollywood Bowl creative chair for jazz Herbie Hancock and Clive Davis, who has been a co-host of sorts throughout the series by helping book his roster of legendary artists or regaling the audience with legendary tales about his relationships and the stories behind the songs. Gavin DeGraw is one such artist who returned the favor and told a story about how he met and signed a record deal with Davis. DeGraw drew raves for his performances of "Not Over You." DeGraw then made way for the night’s next-to-last performer, Andy Grammer, who performed "Good to Be Alive (Hallelujah)." And the closing act? New Order and the Pet Shop Boys. • On Saturday, the Hollywood Bowl reopened... For L.A. music fans, it was heartbreaking but unsurprising when the Hollywood Bowl canceled its season for the first time in nearly a century, because of COVID-19. But the beloved band shell wasn't completely emptied out. Not if you’re the WME partner who throws the hottest-ticket private Zoom party for the entertainment biz. For two months since the pandemic began, agent Richard Weitz and his 17-year-old daughter, Demi, have thrown invitation-only fundraising variety shows on Zoom that roped in A-list artists to perform, while film and music industry execs watched from their couches. The two usually host shows from their kitchen counter, but on Saturday, the regulars watched them beamed in from a familiar but now melancholy spot: a box at the Hollywood Bowl ... John Williams, whose "Star Wars" scores are a perpetual hit at Bowl movie nights, played Darth Vader’s theme music on his home piano. Kenny Loggins riffed on the "Footloose" theme from the upper reaches of the Bowl’s box seats, as the film's star Kevin Bacon watched from his own Zoom window. Rob Thomas hopped in (virtually) next to Carlos Santana, and Elvis Costello played an earnest version of “(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding”. Beck played Prince’s "Raspberry Beret" and "Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime"; Barry Manilow's resurgent crowd favorite "When the Good Times Come Again" brought Amy Adams to tears in the group chat ("Crying. Thank you."). The Killers powered through an apropos cover of Tom Petty's "The Waiting," and Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" had a new immediacy in the COVID era. Regulars like Clive Davis watched from home as classic-pop songwriter Carole Bayer Sager gabbed with guests in the screen rail ... For the thousand or so industry folks tuned in, it was a chance to see something, anything, on the most beloved stage in L.A. The rest of us will have to settle for screengrabs instead of wine-soused picnics and fireworks. It may be the first of more digital events to come. For the Bowl’s 2020 calendar, the clock’s at zero. L.A.’s ultimate power-Zoom livestream was, so far, the first, and last show of the season there. (L.A. Times, 5/24/2020)

  • Richard Weitz's Pandemic Parties Surpass $1M Milestone - What started simply, and privately, as a fun way to connect while celebrating a 17-year-old’s birthday five weeks ago has grown into a virtual fundraising phenomenon that crossed the $1 million mark Friday night during a concert event that featured the mayor of Atlanta, R&B superstars and Hollywood power players teaming up to raise money to support COVID-19 relief efforts. Anchored, promoted and hosted by WME partner Richard Weitz with daughter Demi from their Beverly Hills home, the pandemic concert series shifted focus to spotlight the work of United Way Worldwide in helping residents in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, New York City, New Orleans and Philadelphia.

Well over $250,000 was raised during the four-plus hour event, funds that will be distributed to provide food assistance, education resources for kids, preventative healthcare, and financial support for families in need. Tonight’s showing followed a series of events over the past four weeks that featured more than 100 top artists showing off their talents to the tune of $850,000 for previous beneficiaries the Saban Community Clinic, Cedars-Sinai Hospital, United Way L.A. and New York City Health + Hospitals.

Friday’s event started at 6 p.m. with remarks from Richard and Demi, both wearing United Way t-shirts with the slogan “Live United,” as they provided an update on the progress thus far. "I don’t think I’ve ever felt my heart beating so fast," Demi said. "I want to start by saying thank you everyone. It’s been overwhelming. I’m so grateful and so happy for each and every one [who has donated]. I didn’t even think we’d get to $10,000."

Richard and Demi's pandemic parties started in mid-March when Richard tested out a virtual birthday party for Demi when most of the world had just started isolating under safe-at-home mandates. He booked his favorite Windy City piano man, Dario Giraldo of the Chicago’s Redhead Piano Bar, to entertain an intimate group but after Demi and friends got restless from the nostalgic jams, Weitz expanded the invite list to friends and Hollywood colleagues. It was an instant hit and since then, he’s hosted under a dozen events with big-name musical acts logging in to perform their hits while a select roster of invitees look on from their respective homes. "I wanted people to have a good time," Weitz previously told The Hollywood Reporter of why he started the gatherings. "It’s like comfort food - songs and artists that people have literally grown up with that make everyone happy and bring joy in this difficult time."

The money kept pouring in past a million Friday night. Soul legend Jeffrey Osborne kicked off the night, and his presence at tonight’s event carried significant meaning for Osborne, he said, as he was still grieving the loss of both his manager and another friend, who died at Vanderbilt Hospital. "It’s hitting home for me now, and I really love that you’re doing something"... Clive Davis moved to speak early on, saying how he’d been watching the concert series since the beginning. Like such industry titans as Bob Iger, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Dana Walden and Jennifer Salke, Davis has been a constant face on the Zoom screen while watching from Palm Springs where he’s been waiting out the pandemic. "To see you reach these figures is [astonishing]," said Davis. He then singled out artists he’s helped deliver like Barry Gibb, Barry Manilow and Johnny Mathis, the latter two who appeared during a special April 25 edition of the series which featured singers, legends and Broadway stars raising money for New York City Health + Hospitals.

Performers last weekend included Josh Groban, Josh Gad and Nikki M. James, Marcus Mumford, Barry Manilow (“When the Good Times Come Again” and a medley of five of his greatest hits including “Copacabana,” “Can’t Smile Without You” and "I Write the Songs"), Teddy Swims, Jessie Mueller, Adrienne Warren, Ramin Karimloo, Samantha Barks, Lauren Patten, Andy Karl and Orfeh, Brenock O’Connor, Ephraim Sykes , Erika Henningsen, Kyle Selig and the “Singing Surgeon” Dr. Elvis Francois. Hamilton was well represented by Leslie Odom and Christopher Jackson. Broadway star Keala Settle also delivered the chills when she dedicated “I’m Gone” from Hands on a Hard Body to Nick Cordero, who is currently battling COVID-19 while in an induced coma at Cedars-Sinai.

Friday night (5/1): Davis also turned his attention to Bottoms and Atlanta when he said that he’s spent considerable time there with his artists like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick or working with producers like Dallas Austin, L.A. Reid and Babyface. “To see your heroic stand what you’re doing,” he said to the Mayor, “I want you to know we’re extremely proud of you” ... Davis then introduced Fantasia, saying that she follows in the “great tradition of Aretha and Whitney and I’m so grateful you joined us here tonight with your beautiful, beautiful voice.” Other highlights included Al B. Sure, Sheila E.’s medley of the Prince-penned "Glamorous Life" and "A Love Bizarre", Amos Lee’s soulful selection of songs on the piano, guitar and acapella, Jac Ross, Michael Franti, [the] Waldens, [and] Johnny Gill. The night stretched past 10 p.m. and Richard welcomed back Osborne to close the show ("Back in Love Again," "Love Ballad," and "What a Wonderful World"). (The Hollywood Reporter, 5/2/2020)

  • Michael Damian to interview Barry Manilow on his radio show - Michael Damian will interview Barry Manilow on his radio show Throwback Thursday. The show airs on multiple radio stations, but is broadcast primarily from Kkulrealhitradio.com. As times have changed, more people are listening to less of a dial-by-turn radio and accessing music from digitally broadcast Internet broadcasts. Damian's show is the best of both worlds. He presents the program in the same way that any disc jockey of the 70s or 80s would, but uses digital broadcasting to ensure that everyone with access to an internet broadcast can listen. Although you might think that the station is a favorite only for Young and Restless fans (Michael played Danny Romalotti from time to time from 1980 to 2013) which has not turned out to be the case. Michael knows that music has grown in the industry and is an accomplished singer-songwriter in his own right, and the music he selects for the show takes the listener on a pleasant journey down memory lane. Each show is played and repeated the next hour, starting at 6 p.m. PT and 7 p.m. PT; 9 p.m. ET and 10 p.m. ET and includes an interview with a celebrity. Fans enjoy the famous surprise guest as much as they enjoy listening to the carefully selected songs that Michael Damian selects, and yes, he accepts requests. On Thursday April 30, 2020, the celebrity surprise guest will be Barry Manilow. Join me to start my radio show Throwback Thursday @ 6PM PST! I have super star @Barry Manilow on tonight's show! • Palm Beach Cultural Organizations Join in One Voice - As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect day-to-day life, Palm Beach County cultural organizations have joined together to offer a message of hope. In partnership with the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County, four of the area’s top arts organizations -- the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Palm Beach Opera, Palm Beach Symphony, and Ballet Palm Beach -- recorded an online performance of Barry Manilow’s “One Voice.” The video illustrates that, although concerts, performances, and large gatherings are currently on hold, the arts still thrive in the Palm Beaches.

Andrew Kato, producing artistic director and chief executive of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, produced the video, which opens with young vocalists from the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts. “I suggested the song 'One Voice' because the lyrics speak to the isolation we feel and how we can come together as one unified county,” Kato said in a statement. “One lone voice is joined by another and another and then is joined by a chorus of voices, instruments, and movements that unite to shine a light on Palm Beach County and the unparalleled, unique cultural arts we all contribute to our community. I’m extremely proud of the quality and diversity of work that is being created in South Florida.”

The video continues with the addition of vocals by recent graduates from Palm Beach Opera’s Benenson Young Artist Program and Bailey Apprentice Artist Program, and is set to a score performed by some of Palm Beach Symphony’s principal musicians. All of the artists recorded their parts at their own homes, including ballerina Lily Ojea Loveland, who worked on her dance solo during remote rehearsals with Colleen Smith, the company’s founding artistic director.

All four of the participating arts organizations are looking ahead to their 2020-21 seasons. As they prepare for better days, these creatives are shining a spotlight on how the arts can help us all get through this difficult time. (Palm Beach Illustrated, 4/20/2020)

  • The 10 shows and performers we’re looking forward to seeing again once this crisis is over - I would love to say that I’m counting down the days until the coronavirus pandemic is in the rear-view mirror, but since the pandemic and our subsequent social distancing measures will stretch out indefinitely, there aren’t any tangible days to count. Though, I suppose I could say that I can’t wait until this is all over. You may have already inferred that the future of Las Vegas entertainment is uncertain. The next few weeks -- and, possibly, months -- in Las Vegas may remain dark (in entertainment lingo, not existentially). But we are anxiously awaiting the time in which our beloved entertainers return. Looking ahead to that moment, here are entertainers we’re looking forward to seeing post-pandemic ... #1 - Absinthe ... #2 - Barry Manilow, Westgate Las Vegas Music brings communities together. And nothing says community like a massive singalong. With Barry Manilow, that’s exactly what you’ll get when he returns to Vegas. And, even though you’re probably super cool, don’t pretend like you don’t know his biggest hits. You do... #3 - Carrot Top ... #4 - Extravaganza—The Vegas Spectacular ... #5 - Jabbawockeez ... #6 - Jen Kramer ... #7 - Kelly Clarkson ... #8 - Lady Gaga ... 9 - Mat Franco ... #10 - Carlos Santana. With the virus continuing to spread throughout the country, social distancing regulations have been implemented by governments to slow the spread of the disease. Bergen added that the live streaming of the show will not only raise money but also provide entertainment to millions of viewers. "This is the ultimate win-win proposition. The Actors Fund needs our support, and we’re all desperate for some fabulous entertainment we can enjoy from the safety of our own homes. I’m so grateful to Rosie, and to this truly jaw-dropping array of talent that have agreed to participate," she added.

It’s back March 5-7 and 26-28, and Manilow has plenty of dates booked in April, May and June as well. He’s currently working on Night Songs II, a romantic follow-up to his 2014 collection of beloved cover tunes. The first release from the new album is “My Funny Valentine,” demonstrating another of Manilow’s talents: his ability to interpret classics in a way that really resonates.
