  • Introducing Barry Manilow - Harold and Edna Pincus’ little boy, Barry Pincus, was born and bred in Brooklyn in 1943. Here, 22 years later, he is pictured funding his studies via a part-time job. Not just any studies, though, and not just any part-time job. In 1965, Barry was a student at the New York College of Music, and the job he bagged was working at CBS records. It was CBS who took these photos. Why? Actually, there was no real reason - CBS didn’t have some kind of musical crystal ball revealing the future transformation of Barry Pincus into Barry Manilow (Edna’s maiden name). Rather, these were run-of-the-mill work shots to record yet another employee ... It was CBS that inadvertently created a future for Manilow when, in 1964, Barry met CBS director Bro Herrod. Herrod asked Manilow to arrange some songs for an off-Broadway production. In return, Manilow slightly over-delivered by providing an entire score. The show ran for eight years. Much of the remainder of Manilow’s 1960s were spent churning out -- and singing on -- advertising jingles, including McDonalds, KFC, Pepsi, Band-Aid and Dr Pepper. Less than ten years later, he was a bona fide star! (Considerable., 11/4/2019)

  • Jackie Siegel and billionaire husband David throw star-studded gala to fight opioid crisis - Billionaire couple David Siegel and his wife Jackie - known as the 'Queen of Versailles' - entertained a slew of celebrities at a lavish charity gala in their Vegas hotel last week. Artists Barry Manilow, Dionne Warwick, Scott Stapp and Lee Greenwood joined reality stars Michael Lohan, Gretchen Rossi, Teresa Guidice and Phaedra Parks as well as actors Daniel Baldwin and Rebecca Holden on Friday at the 900-seat fundraiser to fight the opioid epidemic. The star-studded Westgate Hotel gala raised $1.3million for the Victoria Siegel Foundation, named after the billionaire couple's 18-year-old daughter who died of a drug overdose in 2015. No expense was spared by her father who footed the entire bill for the event, flying in celebrities on his GulfStream private jet and opening up his own 12,600 sq ft suite, formerly used by Elvis Presley as his Vegas residence, for a raucous after-party... • PROMS IN THE PARK, Hyde Park - The BBC Proms closed another year with literal bangs, as the Last Night of the Proms played out at Proms in the Park in a blaze of fireworks, alongside the more traditional classical performances over at the Royal Albert Hall ... The world's largest contemporary choir, The Rock Choir, kicked proceedings off with some crowd-pleasers like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and "Bohemian Rhapsody". Aled Jones and Russell Watson featured early on in the programme, with a classic rendition of "Volare", amongst others. The Proms' ode to musical theatre began with a mash-up of "On My Own" and "I Dreamed a Dream" by Carrie Hope Fletcher and Shan Ako, the current Fantine and Eponine in the concert version of Les Miserables playing at the Gielgud Theatre. Proms host Michael Ball donned his Javert jacket, and belted out the signature "Stars", shortly before introducing Jon Robyns' brilliant performance as King George from Hamilton. Ball then broke the news that Robyns had been cast as Jean Valjean in the upcoming Les Mis cast opening in the newly named Sondheim Theatre. A temporary exclusive for Proms-goers, as the news story broke seconds afterwards online. The Cardinals wrapped up this MT extravaganza with a rendition of "Shallow", from A Star is Born. An impressive line-up of retro pop acts graced the stage next, with Gabrielle, Lighthouse Family and Bonnie Tyler. Jack Savoretti gave us some mellow acoustic vibes, which changed the pace nicely before ramping things back up again for Chrissie Hynde, who proved her staying power with a powerful delivery of five songs from her back catalogue. Headliner Barry Manilow closed the proceedings, storming through a 40-minute set with the energy of a man half his age. His vocals were on point, and even his lesser-known hits went down well - clearly there were many Fanilows in the audience. Plugging his 2020 tour, Manilow appeared to be thoroughly enjoying his time on stage, and he was the perfect showman, bringing everyone together in a dancing shower of sequins. • Los Alamitos High School Show Choir performs with Barry Manilow and LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl - For many performers, just one of these three things would be a lifelong dream: perform at an iconic venue, sing with a legendary singer-songwriter, or be accompanied by world-renown philharmonic. For some of the members of Los Alamitos High School (LAHS) Show Choir, students had an opportunity to do all three in one weekend. On Sept. 6 and 7, students were invited on stage with Barry Manilow and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three songs at the Hollywood Bowl. Approximately 60 students who are members of Sound FX, the Advanced Mixed Choir, and several members of Soundtrax, the Advanced Women’s Choir, performed at the sold-out event. This might be a treasured memory for these dedicated and talented young artists.

In the weeks before the event, the students under the direction of Vice-Principal and Director David Moellenkamp and Associate Director Moana Dherlin, rehearsed the songs. At the Hollywood Bowl, they learned the choreography and music from Manilow’s back-up singer, Kye Brackett. They had a chance to go backstage at the Bowl and talk with some of the members of the LA Philharmonic. The 76- year-old Grammy Award winning performer was on the charts long before these students were even born, but even these young singers knew his hit songs and delighted the audience by joyfully performing on stage with him. Billboard.com’s Paul Grein wrote, “the kids...were beaming.“ They accompanied Manilow when he sang “I Write the Songs” and “It’s a Miracle” as well as his Grammy-winning hit “Copacabana”.

The performers enjoyed the entire event. Riley Dunklin, a senior and 2-year member of Sound FX, said of the experience “It was surreal to look out at a huge sea of people” at the Hollywood Bowl. Another senior Sound FX member, Hayley Smitson, agreed with Dunklin and added in, “It was unbelievable to perform with such an icon and see how it feels to perform in front of thousands of people”. Tatiana Bertrand, also a senior in Sound FX, said the entire event was “unexpectedly fun and I want to go and perform there again! This isn’t the first time LAHS Show Choir has been seen with top performers. They’ve previously performed with Manilow, and been on stage with Kristin Bell, Nick Jonas, John Stamos, Journey, Foreigner, Patti Lupon and Kristin Chenoweth. (Orange County Breeze, 9/13/2019)

  • Manilow as anticipated - During a quick chat in New York after he closed his Broadway run, Barry Manilow said he wanted to be a headliner at Westgate’s International Theater for as long as the resort would have him. So: The latest effort to keep Manilow in long-term residency at International Theater was announced Monday, as Manilow will perform Feb. 13-15, Feb. 20-22, March 5-7 and March 26-28. • Barry Manilow ‘having a great time’ in NYC - The New York Post’s Page Six reported Monday that Manilow’s run at Lunt-Fontanne Theatre has been a “flop” because of sagging ticket sales, and that Manilow and his husband/manager Garry Kief are fighting daily behind the scenes. Kief, Manilow’s manager since 1980 and his husband since 2014, slapped back at the Post’s account of disarray in the production. “It’s a great nonstop show of hits, it usually runs a couple hours, Barry sounds fantastic, audiences are crazy and we are going to gross over $4 million,” Kief, who also brokered Manilow’s residency deal at Westgate’s International Theater, said in an e-mail message. “Pretty (darn) good for only 17 shows, and beyond expectations.” Kief added, “We’re having a lot of fun and a great time, though we miss our Westgate family and Las Vegas. • Barry Manilow attends Lorna Luft's Opening at Feinstein's/54 Below - Entertainment royalty came out to see show biz royalty last night at Feinstein's/54 Below. Lorna Luft thoroughly enthralled a celebrity filled audience as she shared the music that was a part of her early years. The Beatles were very present in her song list and we learned that Lorna had a major crush on George Harrison. As Lorna related, "coming from a show biz family has it's perks". She was able to meet them back stage after a concert she attended with her friend Leslie Bogart and her mother Lauren Bacall. Ms. Bacall warned the two youngsters that daughters of celebrities are not supposed to jump up and down and scream, consequently Lorna and Leslie were the only girls in the stadium quietly sitting with a stern look on their faces during The Beatle Concert!

It was an exciting evening on all levels and Barry Manilow currently exciting audiences on Broadway joined the audience standing for Lorna's last numbers "I'll Be Here Tomorrow" and "I'm Still Standing" which celebrated her overcoming health issues these last seven years.

Using her unique perspective born from a lifetime in entertainment, Lorna Luft at Feinstein's/54 Below brought levity to the craziness in the world around us by sharing favorites from the Great American Songbook. As expected there were some songs made famous by her mother and film legend, Judy Garland, as well as stories from Hollywood, Broadway, and beyond as only she can tell them.

Born to legendary entertainer Judy Garland and producer Sid Luft, Lorna Luft made her performing debut singing on "The Judy Garland Show." Since then, she has had dozens of starring and guest-starring roles on film and television, ranging from Grease 2 and Where the Boys Are '84 to the series "Murder She Wrote" and "Sean Saves the World." Lorna was co-executive producer of Life with Judy Garland, the 5 time Emmy award-winning miniseries based on her best-selling memoir, Me and My Shadows. (Broadway World, 8/9/2019)

  • Westgate celebrates 50 years of star power - Fans of Westgate Las Vegas love it for its superlative restaurants, world’s largest Superbook and of course, Barry Manilow. But the hotel that launched the era of the megaresort also has a rich history. Many staff members who have been there since the beginning join us in looking back at five amazing decades. Westgate began as Las Vegas International Hotel. When it opened on July 2, 1969, at a cost of $50 million, it was the largest hotel in the world. Announcements boasted, “An embodiment of everything the Las Vegas resort industry has learned in the last 10 years.” But what really set the International apart was an outstanding staff and legendary entertainment ... The resort was acquired by Hilton brands in 1971. Star Trek: The Experience opened in 1998, drawing thousands of fans, celebrities and television coverage. Remnants of the attraction, which closed in 2008, can still be spotted by eagle-eyed guests. The Hilton partnership was dissolved in 2012, but the resort operated under the name LVH until Westgate Resorts acquired it in 2014 and invested more than $160 million in renovations and updates, which include high-end dining options and the award-winning Serenity Spa. They also lured back Hilton favorite Manilow. Usher Angel Lopez Rosas has been on property the entire 50 years. He’s witnessed performances by Charo, Liberace, Wayne Newton and Manilow. “The most amazing thing for me is all of the headliners I’ve seen over the years. All of the biggest names. If they came to Las Vegas, they performed right here.” (Las Vegas Magazine, 7/26/2019)

The Sioux City School District entered a video in a competition with the Barry Manilow Music Project. First place receiving $100,000. The submission showed a well-worn trumpet, banged-up saxophone and broken violin and highlighted the need for economic help. “I have seen the impact you made around the country. • East Duplin wins $100,000 Barry Manilow giveaway - One of Barry Manilow’s greatest performances came this week for East Duplin High School. Manilow announced Wednesday the winners of a $100,000 giveaway and the East Duplin High School band was named the grand prize winner. “Thank you for your heart. Thank you for your compassion. Thank you for your talent,” Manilow said during the announcement from Las Vegas, which was posted in a video on the Manilow Music Project website.

According to information from Manilow Music Project, Manilow launched a nationwide search for one high school band to receive $100,000 for musical instruments and uniforms in response to funding cuts in public schools. The competition kicked off as Manilow celebrated his 500th performance at the Westgate resort in Las Vegas. “This really is a godsend for our school and the community,” said East Duplin High School Principal Scott Ballard. Ballard was closing up the school Wednesday night when he started getting texts from people that the school’s band program had won. “I was standing in the band room turning off the lights when I got the first text saying we won the $100,000 but I didn’t know who it was. I didn’t think much about it then I got to the parking lot and got another text. It hit me like a ton of bricks,” Ballard said. The school district doesn’t have a lot of funding for the band program and the $100,000 will go far in helping them to meet their needs. He said the band program will take a look at its options for using the funds as wisely as possible. “We want to try and take the money and make it go as much as possible,” Ballard said.

Schools were asked to upload videos explaining who they are and why they needed the funds. Several factors were used to determine the winner, including online votes, community involvement, and level of need. Manilow chose the winning school. Band Director Thomas Seaman thanked everyone involved in the project and said it is more than a monetary win. “I really cannot express my gratitude with sufficient grace and appreciation to all those who have helped with this project,” he said. “From the students who put together our video to the parents who got the word out to our local news outlets to the teachers who had their classes voting daily, and to the greater areas of Duplin and Onslow counties, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It is not just the money you have helped us to win but the lives you have touched just by showing your support. I am completely in awe at the way people have come together to show their support for the East Duplin High School band. I could not be happier to be anywhere else.” Ballard said their school’s band is small but continues to grow and has tremendous support from the parents and community. “We’re a tiny band but our band booster parents are phenomenal and never turn down an opportunity to raise money for the band,” he said. • Sioux City Schools to receive $20,000 thanks to Barry Manilow - The Sioux City Community School district will be getting $20,000 for new instruments after they won 2nd place in the Manilow Music Project’s video contest. 72 other school districts submitted videos that explained why their district needs the $100,00 grand prize.

“We really stumbled across the application online, and Barry Manilow requested 5 minutes video about why our school needed new instruments and what we would do with the 100,000. So we put together a little video and sent it off and we really didn’t think anything would come of it,” said Kari Trienen, Director of the Sioux City Public School Foundation. Trienen says the prize money will be used to buy new instruments for all the public schools in Sioux City.

Barry Manilow made the announcement on a video posted to his foundation’s website on June 19th. During the video, Manilow announced the top five school districts that submitted videos and one district whose video won the most votes online. • Barry Manilow cuts $100K check for North Carolina high school band - BEULAVILLE, N.C. -- Barry Manilow wrote a check for $100,000 and gave it to an eastern North Carolina high school band. East Duplin High School won this year's Manilow Music Project contest. The contest asks bands across the country to submit videos about why they need extra funding. East Duplin's video said the band's uniforms are 24 years old, they are unable to upgrade their instruments and many families are still recovering from Hurricane Florence. Manilow named the winners Wednesday in a music video. He thanked East Duplin High School for "your passion, your heart and your talent."

East Duplin band director Thomas Seaman released the following statement about the victory: "I really cannot express my gratitude, with sufficient grace and appreciation, to all of those who have helped with this project. Manilow said he had been “bombarded” with video entries from high schools across the country saying why they think they deserved the funds before giving East Duplin the $100,000 for new instruments and uniforms. • Easy-listening legend Barry Manilow gives $100,000 to hurricane-ravaged high school band - There just aren’t enough Barry Manilow news days, in our opinion. The just-turned 76-year-old easy-listening songwriting legend is still performing in Vegas, and also runs the Manilow Music Project, which is “keeping dreams alive one instrument at a time” by donating to school music programs, and has given over $10 million in total to date over more than three decades. The website says that Manilow created the project in honor of his own high school orchestra in Brooklyn and is primarily focused on supplying instruments, which can run over $1,000 per violin and more than $7,000 per tuba.

Barry Manilow just announced this year’s winners from his stage in Vegas, with four runners-up and a special award for best video. According to KATU, Manilow said he was bombarded by video entries before deciding to give the grand-prize award to the marching band of East Duplin High School in North Carolina, in “an area still recovering from Hurricane Florence.” The fortunate winners will receive $100,000 in instruments and band uniforms.

In the video, Manilow says that he heard from kids who told him that “band classes helped them to make friends they couldn’t make in other classes... I know exactly what you’re talking about.” The winning East Duplin Marching Band video shows how the band members all stayed in touch even while school was shut down after the hurricane, calling themselves a family several times over, and when the band director chokes up, it’s hard for the viewer not to as well.

Manilow thanks the winners “for your passion, your heart, and your talent.” If Barry Manilow is thanking you for those things, kids, you are definitely doing something right. Manilow then closes his video with some strains of “Copacabana,” because of course he knows what his true show-stopper is. (AV Club, 6/21/2019)

  • East Duplin High School Band wins $100,000 from Manilow Music Project - The East Duplin High School Band won a $100,000 prize on Wednesday in an annual contest founded by singer and songwriter Barry Manilow. The band recently entered a contest by the Manilow Music Project, which, according to the Project's website, "Empowers underfunded school music programs to provide quality music education," by donating musical instruments to bands and providing scholarships to music students. On June 19, live in Las Vegas, Barry Manilow announced the 2019 Manilow Music Project winners. East Duplin won the Grand Prize of $100,000 for its band program.

  • SCCSD awarded $20,000 from the Barry Manilow Project - The Sioux City Community School District is one of the five lucky districts across the United States that was awarded money from the Barry Manilow Project. The Sioux City Public Schools Foundation submitted a video in May in hopes of getting money to buy new instruments. The group's executive director Kari Treinen said this will help middle and high school students who can't afford instruments. "We have 70% of our students in the Sioux City Community School District qualify for the free or reduced meal program. That's the only poverty indication that the school district has access too. It shows us that a lot of students can't buy or rent because they don't have the money at home to buy because of the basic needs. We really believe music is a basic need because it helps our students academically, socially," said Sioux City Public Schools Foundation executive director, Kari Treinen. She said the $20,000 should be able to purchase 20 to 25 instruments for the upcoming school year. (SiouxLand News KMEG 14/FOX-44, 6/20/2019)

  • Big surprise; Manilow Music Project awards Wasilla High band $10,000 - Wasilla High School band director Jackie Johnson, a handful of students and some parents gathered in the band room Wednesday, watching a live countdown on a projector. They took a break from summer vacation for a very important live announcement from the Manilow Music Project to find out which American high school won $100,000 for its music program. They stirred in their seats waiting for Barry Manilow to reveal the winner. “I was like, ‘just shut up and tell us,’” flute player Trinity Nohr said with a laugh.

Much to everyone’s surprise, WHS made it in the top five, not knowing there would be such a thing in this contest. WHS took fourth place, winning $10,000 for its music program. The room lit up with excitement, cheering and applauding over the victory. “It’s a great start for us. It won’t take care of everything we need but it’s certainly a step in the right direction and we’re just so tickled. It’s a good surprise. We didn’t know there would be runners up,” Johnson said. Johnson became visibly emotional over the news. Her eyes welled up and she kept turning away to hide her tears of joy. She was just as surprised as everyone when Manilow mentioned there would be runner up awards. She thought it would just be that one shot at the $100,000.

Manilow, a popular singer with a career that spans more than five decades, created this annual giveaway as a response to budget cuts in public schools. WHS and the other participating schools across the U.S. entered videos to tell their stories and explain why they are in need of new equipment. The need is certainly there at WHS. They haven’t had a new instrument in at least 20 years, according to Johnson. They’ve had to get creative with their limited resources. She said that the wood shop class made a set of stools for the band, not for sitting but for drumming. The WHS drumline used the stools as drums during this year’s ASAA State Solo and Ensemble Contest. They were the top small percussion ensemble division. “Imagine if we had real instruments,” Johnson said with a laugh.

The video was created by trumpet player Greg DeArmond, who spearheaded the project, shooting and editing the video. A handful of band members helped DeArmond. All the students can be seen in the final cut. He was in the room when the news hit. “I’m happy we’re getting money. It’s a lot better than nothing. It’s going to help a lot,” DeArmond said. DeArmond is entering his senior year in the fall. He said that he was nervous while waiting for the results. He wishes they got the full $100,000 since they need it so bad but he was ultimately thankful they got this financial boost, which is still major. “I’m relieved we got something out of it,” DeArmond said.

Shaye Wagner, a 2019 WHS grad and clarinet player, was also in the room. He is well into adulthood already, working 45 hours a week on average but he felt compelled to find out how everything went all the same. “Band was everything to me,” Wagner said. “It’s like a whole other family. I think every kid should be able to experience this kind of thing.” Wagner said that he went to see the other shoe drop not for himself, but for the next generation of band kids. He said that his younger siblings and cousin play in middle school band and will soon be in the WHS band. He’s happy to know this money will help them and other future band members. “I think the best thing is just supporting all our brothers and sisters… The next generation of kids are going to actually have instruments they can play that aren’t held together by tape,” Wagner said.

Johnson said WHS is the first Alaskan school to win money from the Manilow Music Project, entering “uncharted territory.” She said that she’s going to work with administration to figure out how to make the most of this money. While the $100,000 would be ideal since they need so many different instruments and still don’t have uniforms, $10,000 is certainly nothing to sneeze at. “It’s way more than we had five minutes ago,” Johnson said with a laugh. Johnson said that there are currently more students interested in band than there are instruments but that’s a “good problem to have.” “We’ll make it work no matter what,” Johnson said.

The band placed fourth in Barry Manilow's $100,000 instrument and uniform giveaway. In the announcement video, Manilow said he was bombarded with submissions from high schools needing new instruments. "We got to know so many of you," he said. "You guys were funny, witty, so sincere about the importance of your music classes." Manilow said it was hard to choose just one winner so he and his team decided to add some runner-up prizes, and four more schools received money from the giveaway. Manilow Music Project was founded by Barry Manilow more than thirty years ago. The organization provides music scholarships and supports music education across the country. The grand prize winner of the $100,000 uniform and instrument giveaway was the East Duplin High School music program in North Carolina. (KTVA, 6/20/2019)

  • Manilow gives $100,000 to band at NC high school still suffering from hurricane - A North Carolina high school band needed help. The band at East Duplin High School couldn’t afford instrument upgrades, was using uniforms that were 24 years old, and is in an area where many families are still recovering from Hurricane Florence, according to WCTI. So the band made a video explaining its situation and submitted it to a nationwide contest put on by the Manilow Music Project, according to the high school. High school bands from across the country submitted videos explaining why they were in need of money for new instruments and uniforms, according to the project.

Community involvement, need and online votes were all influencing factors, but Barry Manilow, the founder of the project, decided who won, the project’s website said. On Wednesday he announced the five winners in Las Vegas. East Duplin took home first place and $100,000 for new instruments and uniforms. “Thank you for your passion, your heart and your talent,” Manilow said to the band when he announced it won.

Thomas Seaman, the band director, said in a statement that he is in awe of the support. “I really cannot express my gratitude, with sufficient grace and appreciation, to all of those who have helped with this project,” he said. “From the students who put together our video, the parents who got the word out to local news outlets, the teachers who had their classes voting daily and the greater areas of Duplin and Onslow Counties, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.” (The Charlotte Observer, 6/20/2019)

These specialized engineers utilize proprietary audio extraction technologies in order to provide advanced separations that are not easily accomplished using commercially available software. This has enabled Audionamix to help bring a number of unique projects to fruition, and its clients include the biggest content owners, creatives and technicians in the professional music, film and broadcast industries. Audionamix’s Professional Services offerings include the following: Music Dissociation, which can remove music from a scene; Dialogue Isolation, which can isolate or remove dialogue from a scene; Vocal Extraction, which can isolate a vocal performance, and Instrumental Creation.

Audionamix has provided its Music Dissociation service to several classic films so that they could be viewed alongside a live orchestra performing the score. Television series such as Baywatch were able to use the Music Dissociation service to remove previously licensed music in order to re-release original episodes. Vocal Extraction allows for the creation of virtual duets, as heard in Barry Manilow’s GRAMMY® nominated My Dream Duets album ... “In a perfect world, a client would perpetually have access to all the elements to create a full mix, whether it be a TV show, movie, album or individual song,” says Stephen Oliver, senior engineer and coordinator of Professional Services at Audionamix. “But unexpected challenges arise, and archives are often lost over the years. Our team is able to extract content from a mixed audio source using our various extraction technologies. This can include vocals, dialogue, soundtrack and other musical elements.” (Broadcasting Cable, 6/19/2019)

  • E. Tautz Men’s Spring 2020 - Usually, the soundtrack at London shows draws from decades of British talent – punk, pop, reggae, hip hop and techno – but Patrick Grant of E. Tautz was having none of it. For the close of his romantic spring show, he picked Barry Manilow’s [1974] track, “Mandy.” “I like to think the mood of this collection was upbeat, like early Barry Manilow,” said Grant, who built his polished, laid-back collection on his favorite Seventies and Eighties silhouettes, mixing and layering tailored and casual clothing, denim and streetwear with aplomb... • Blossom Music Center memories - CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio -- Blossom Music Center opens its 51st year as the region's premier outdoor summer concert venue. While the amphitheater, nestled in the rolling hills of the Cuyahoga Valley, is known today for the variety of the acts that grace its stage from country to classic rock, pop, hip hop, alternative, and, of course, classical, it wasn't always that way. When Blossom first opened in 1968, the venue primarily hosted the kinds of artists you'd hear on easy listening stations or your parents' album collection. That began to change in the 1980s, as some of the most popular music stars of decade, many before they hit it big, came to Cuyahoga Falls. Younger acts like Whitney Houston, Billy Idol, Def Leppard, Poison, The Go-Go's, Depeche Mode and Debbie Gibson all played there, joining Blossom veterans like Liza Minnelli, Barry Manilow and James Taylor on the summer bills.
