- Top valley entertainment stories of 2008: #5 Barry Manilow's big giveaway - It started when a friend told Manilow of the subpar band instruments at Palm Desert Middle School. Manilow not only helped them, he conceived a plan to buy instruments and sheet music for all of the local public schools to encourage others to get similarly involved. Twenty schools told the Palm Springs resident what they needed, and Manilow delivered $500,000 worth of instruments to them in September. The singer called it "Extreme Makeover: Band Edition." - Dick Clark returns for a 36th New Year's Eve - Clark, who turned 79 last month and has been in front of the cameras for 61 years, woke up with right-side paralysis on Dec. 6, 2004 – "Your life changes overnight," he said. "I am one of the fortunate ones who survived and have been minimally impaired, so I'm just thankful I'm still able to enjoy this once-a-year treat of bringing in the New Year." The "American Bandstand" icon and longtime producer of the American Music Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards and Golden Globes has long considered them "my television kids." These days, Clark divides his time between his Malibu home and Burbank office. The day ends with his devoted wife Kari. "My wife and I may join friends for dinner at a restaurant, attend a movie or just grab a bite to eat by ourselves away from home," Clark wrote. "Occasionally, we'll attend a music concert. Recently we've seen Barry Manilow, Bette Midler, Frankie Valli and Cher." (Orange County Register, 12/30/2008)

To produce the TV special, Ocean Spray bought the rights to "Cranberry Christmas," a 1976 book written and illustrated by Wende and Harry Devlin. - Manilow's 'Copacabana' hits G&L Theatre stage - Audiences at this weekend's "Copacabana" musical in Naples will discover how Barry Manilow and Oscar Wilde think alike. "Life imitates art far more than art imitates life," playwright, poet and short story writer Wilde once said. Barry Manilow wrote the 1978 song "Copacabana" about a guy writing a song. His character dreamed the song would become a smash hit. That year Manilow's disco ditty crested at No. 8 on the Billboard charts and at No. 42 in the United Kingdom. He got a Grammy. And "Copacabana" keeps shapeshifting. Manilow made it into a made-for-TV musical film and a one-hour Las Vegas show. He expanded it into a stage musical in England and later it jumped the pond back to the United States. When the song became 15 years old, a remix version reached No. 22 on the Billboard charts. Most people have heard of the song but aren't acquainted with the musical's more intricate plot, says Broadway performer Larry Alexander. "It might be the first musical that was based on a song, and I'm a pretty big musical theater freak," he says. In the musical, Alexander plays the songwriter, Stephen. Stephen writes about Lola, a showgirl at Copacabana, a night club based on a real New York City hot spot during the 1940s. Lola's boyfriend is the club's bartender, Tony. "As he writes it, the characters come alive," says Alexander, whose Stephen becomes Tony. "At the end of the story, it's unclear whether it's still fantasy or reality." It's also apropos that Katie Barton plays Lola. Like Lola, she's a young woman who recently moved to New York City to make it big in show biz. "I can definitely relate," Barton says. But enter the dangerous Rico character. Rico spots Lola in a performance, gets her drunk on champagne and drugs her drink. He kidnaps her and takes her to become his woman and his main showgirl in his own club, the Tropicana in Havana. "That's where my imagination comes in," Barton says, laughing. So Tony and the Copacabana club owner come to Havana to rescue her. A fight ensues. A gun fires. And someone dies... The musical is packed with elaborate, high-energy songs and dances. Bright, feathery and sequined headdresses adorn the showgirls in Vegas fashion. Critics have dubbed Manilow's work as cheesy, but many musicians and cabaret performers respect his craftsmanship as a songwriter, Alexander and TheatreZone director Mark Danni say. "I like to have something in my season that's light and fun, something in which you can sit back and smile," Danni says. "It's certainly not cerebral, nor is it trying to be." In typical TheatreZone fashion, Danni and the professional New York City cast are putting the show together in a whirlwind eight days. TheatreZone is Naples' only professional equity theater company. - 'Copacabana' to premiere at Lyric Theatre - Rachel Blavatnik has inside information about how to direct "Barry Manilow's Copacabana," a musical based on the singer-songwriter's pop hit about a nightclub showgirl named Lola and the men who fought over her. Four years ago, she was the company manager of the extravagant show's national tour; now, she is staging its area premiere at Stuart's Shiloh Theatrical Productions, beginning Wednesday (December 3). Asked what makes "Copacabana" a good choice for Shiloh's performers and audience, producer Lori Risco said, "Well, it's Barry Manilow. Who doesn’t love Barry Manilow? That's why I'm excited. It brings me back to my childhood. So for the older people in the community, I can only imagine their enthusiasm." Blavatnik said, "I love that it is really a love letter to the 1940s, the MGM musicals of the era. And the dancing is so incredible. As a complete non-dancer, I am so impressed with the choreography that Lindsay Davis has put together. And the showgirls are amazing." - Noisy Handed Manilow Punishment - A US judge has decided to make the punishment fit the crime by forcing noisy people to listen to Barry Manilow songs. Judge Paul Sacco introduced the new form of sentence after becoming fed up dealing with repeat offenders. Most of them had repeatedly played their car or home stereo too loud or were involved in band practices which disturbed neighbours. "This is a way, when I look back, of teaching manners to people," the judge, from Fort Lupton Municipal Court in Colorado, said. People who violate the town's noise laws are required to listen to the judge's choice of music at high volume for one hour. The selection includes Manilow classics, as well as the theme song from children's television show Barney And Friends and other uncool music ... Judge Sacco said the scheme has been far more successful in cutting down repeat offenders that the previous system of fines. (Sky News, 11/26/2008)

- Economy plays sour tune for school music programs - Mary Lou Weinrich recently found herself with more elementary school students interested in music than she had instruments for, so she reached out to an untapped resource. Weinrich, coordinator of the Visual and Performing Arts program for the San Bernardino City Unified School District, put out a call to district residents, hoping to send them scurrying into attics and garages in search of instruments left there to gather dust. She struck a chord -- and collected enough instruments to enable 12 to 15 more students to participate in the program. With the slumping economy cutting into their funds, Inland school district music program coordinators and teachers are relying on resourcefulness to keep the arts alive for their students. In Riverside, music teachers have seen some help from a state block grant, but they still find themselves borrowing instruments from each other's schools to fill the gap. Teachers in Rialto and Hemet also reported getting help from the state grant, but still having to find alternate sources for funding. Instructors often loan instruments, provide sheet music and help raise money for trips and competitions. Singer and songwriter Barry Manilow recently donated $500,000 in musical instruments to middle and high schools in the Palm Springs, Coachella Valley and Desert Sands school districts to help replenish depleted music programs. Weinrich said the San Bernardino district buys new instruments regularly, but there always is a need for more. (The Press-Enterprise, 11/23/2008)

- LeBron James has Manilow on iPod - A big fan of all styles of music, Cleveland's superstar always gets ready for games by listening to hip hop. On Thursday before facing the Denver Nuggets, James walked into the Cavaliers' locker room wearing headphones and bouncing as a track by rap star, Jay-Z, one of his good friends, blared in his ears. James said Jay-Z is almost always his choice before taking the floor, but he has diverse musical taste and enjoys R&B and alternative rock. James was then informed that Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony, his longtime friend and U.S. Olympic teammate, admitted last year that he had Barry Manilow's music on his iPod. "I probably got a little of that," James said. "I bet you I can find it on my iPod." "I bet you couldn't," a reporter said, challenging James, who then reached into a bag holding his personal player. A few moments later, no luck. "Nope," James said. "No Brian Manilow." As the room broke up in laughter, James corrected his error. "Oh, BARRY Manilow," he said, smiling. "I was talking about his cousin." James then continued his search, and sure enough, he came up with some Barry Manilow tunes, showing "Copacabana," "Mandy" and "I Am Your Child" on his varied playlist. "I got everything," he said. - Review: Manilow magic at Copacabana - Letchworth Arcadians chose an unusual musical for their autumn show - Copacabana - which was written by Jack Feldman, Bruce Sussman and of course Barry Manilow. The show is relatively new, and enjoyed an 18-month run in the West End from 1997. The story opens in present day New York as Stephen is trying to write a new song and falls into a daydream of the characters of his new song. Stephen observes as Lola La Mar arrives in post-war New York and tries to launch her career as a showgirl. She meets Tony Forte who helps her land a role at The Copa Club, and they soon fall in love. However the course of true love never runs smoothly and soon the menacing Rico interferes in their relationship and tries to force Lola to perform at his club in Havana, which upsets his partner, Conchita, and leaves Tony with the dangerous task of rescuing Lola ... The show was thoroughly enjoyable, and the whole cast really threw themselves into the spirit of the musical. Rob Malone gave a wonderful performance as Stephen/Tony. His voice was perfectly suited to the role and his enthusiasm was tangible. Steve Wilks, as the baddie Rico, was impressively sinister and imposing, and Kimberley Dempster acted the part of Lola well. Francesca Meaby was very good in the role of Conchita, and performed one of the show's big numbers beautifully. Brian Seal and Siân Spencer, as Sam (the owner of the Copacabana) and Gladys (a Copa cigarette girl) respectively, both gave charismatic performances and they managed the New York accents well. The Letchworth Arcadians did a great job and really brought the musical to life. (Hertfordshire Mercury, 11/11/2008)
