  • Round Barn Theatre's production of Barry Manilow's Copacabana - Barry Manilow's unforgettable hit song is brought to life onstage in this entertaining nightclub spectacle. "Her name was Lola. She was a showgirl..." So begins this tale of romance and stardom that has captivated audiences across the globe. With sensational originality, Barry Manilow's Copacabana is a show that will leave you breathless. The story starts with Stephen, a present-day, aspiring songwriter, who is in the midst of writing a tune that tells the story of Lola: fresh off the train from Tulsa, she arrives in New York with showbiz aspirations. Tony is a bartender/composer who falls in love with her and helps her become a Copa girl. Lola, of course, attracts the amorous attentions of Rico..."he wore a diamond". When Rico goes a bit too far by Lola taking her to his rival nightclub in Havana, Tony and the whole Copacabana crew set off to rescue Lola and as they say "Hilarity ensues".

Audiences will delight in Copacabana's splashy production numbers and the slew of brand new Barry Manilow songs. A return to traditional American musical theatre flair, the large cast size boasts numerous chances for performers to shine, while the title alone will incite the interest of both subscribers and newcomers to the theatre. The Round Barn Theatre production is directed by Artistic Director Jerry O'Boyle. Melanie Greyson has choreographed the show. Austin Schoenfelder is the Production Stage Manager and will be assisted by Jackie Robinson, who is also in charge of sound. Karen J. Payton designed the costumes for the show, and Richard Pletcher is the Executive Producer who has also provided the Set Design. Paul Rigano is the Music Director and takes on the dual role of Stephen/Tony, the representation of a composer much like Mr. Manilow himself...

Copacabana opens on Tuesday, July 24, and continues through Sunday, August 26 with 2 p.m. matinees and 8 p.m. evening performances. Copacabana will be translated by American Sign Language interpreters for the deaf on Saturday, August 25 at 8 p.m. Assisted listening devices are available upon request at all performances. • Shows to see this week (July 8 to 14) - In tune with summer, stages in Central New York are heating up with world class acts and award-winning artists ... Barry Manilow is perhaps one of the most recognizable and iconic contemporary crooners of our time. Although often seen as over the top, overplayed, and overly sensational, Manilow speaks to the art of dramatic performance with a love and reverence only few can do with such success. Throughout his solo career, which began in the mid-1970s, Barry Manilow has dominated adult contemporary music. But before such success, he worked for Bette Midler in the early 1970s as her pianist, musical director, accompanist, and played a significant role in the creation of her first two albums. With the release of "Mandy" in 1974 came the launching pad for Barry Manilow's career. The rest, as they say, is history.

Where: Turning Stone Resort Casino, 5218 Patrick Road, Verona. When: 8 p.m. Thursday, July 12. How much: Tickets start at $54. Details here. (Syracuse.com, 7/8/2018)

  • Windsor student choirs joining Barry Manilow on stage at Caesars July 13 - When Chloe Chang was told she'll be singing with Barry Manilow at Caesars, she did not jump for joy. "Who is this old guy?" She remembers thinking. But when she told her family the news that her choir at school will be joining him on stage during the finale next Friday at The Colosseum, her dad was incredibly excited. "My dad goes nuts. He's going crazy, he's like 'Oh my God, we have to get tickets. Do we get discounted tickets?" Chang recalls. Chang is a grade 10 student from St. Anne Catholic High School and her choir, along with the choir at Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School will be singing Manilow's three hits — "Copacabana," "[It's A] Miracle" and "I Write the Songs."

"I Write the Songs" happens to be Lindsay Longpre's favourite. She's the teacher with Cardinal Carter's choir. And next Friday night will be a special one not just for the students, but also the two choir directors -- because they get to sing on stage with the choir and Manilow. "It's really a once in a lifetime opportunity for us," she says.

The two choirs have been practicing separately for about three weeks. They have several joined rehearsals before the big night and even though it's summer break, the students are still showing up to practice. "The music kids are always the good kids that we get, we're so lucky," says Anna Villella, music teacher at St. Anne.

Hours before the performance, the students will be learning some basic choreography to go with the songs as well. And for Chang who didn't know who Manilow was when she first heard the news, she's now giddy about the prospects of being on stage with him. "He's an amazing writer," she says. "The harmonies in [the songs] ... I find it really fun. I want to get a picture with Barry." (CBC, 7/6/2018)

  • Copacabana was 'razzmatazz at its best' - Written by Barry Manilow, Copacabana started out as a song in 1978, was expanded into a TV special seven years later by Dick Clark, then became a live show at Caesars Palace before being transformed into a full-blown, smash hit Transatlantic musical in 1994 and is now a staple of amateur operatic companies the world over. And no wonder. ‘Copacabana’ is an exhilarating show (Southport Spotlights, 27-30 June), full of glamour and razzmatazz set alongside a soundtrack of exciting 40s big band music and Latin rhythms, played here by a top-class 12-piece orchestra under the expert direction of Chris Rimmer. Songs like the title track and [Sweet] Heaven lingered on long after the final curtain.

John Delahunty and Toni Spofforth were both outstanding as barman/would-be songwriter, Tony Forte, and wannabe singer, Lola Lamar, who work together and fall in love at New York’s legendary Copacabana Club. Amanda Shaw was a delight to watch as cigarette lady, Gladys, an ex-showgirl herself, who persuades club owner, Sam (the lively Ian Lawson) to take on Lola as a singer. Naturally, she becomes the star attraction, with Tony as her accompanist, and they take the club by storm. But Lola is drugged by rival club owner, gangster Rico Castelli played by Dom Tolley who, with his Clarke Gable moustache and sinister smile, personified a pre-war villain. Next minute, we are in Cuba. Rico has flown Lola to Havana to headline at his Tropicana Club, Cuba’s top nightspot, intending her to replace current singer, the alluring Conchita (a temptingly seductive performance by Janine Burrows), both onstage and in his bed. Tony arrives in Cuba, along with Gladys and Sam, in pursuit of his lost love. Rico makes to kill him but Conchita beats him to it and shoots her lover dead. Very much a ‘with one bound, Lola was free’ explanation but, heigh ho, this is a musical not a thriller and it is the music and dancing that are important so, on with the show.

The colourful costumes for this production were quite spectacular and would not have looked out of place at the London Palladium and were matched by the exuberance of the fleet-footed dancers. Directed by award-winning Stephen Hughes-Alty, and with a supporting cast of 22 dancers and singers, this was a big-time, feel-good show in what has been a highly successful year for Southport Spotlights. • 3D Glasses at Westgate Las Vegas show - It’s 2018, yes, but 3D glasses never go out of style. Barry Manilow is handing out (or rather, his people are handing out) throwback 3D glasses to his show at International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas. This visual effect, which gained popularity in movie theaters in the 1950s, still has a dizzying quality. Manilow employs the 3D effects during a New York-inspired medley midway through the show. It works, and this it the reason you’ll see a bunch of selfies posted by those in the audience looking like members of Devo. (Las Vegas Review-Journal, 6/23/2018)

  • Manilow mania coming to Westgate in Las Vegas - Shows are opening in both of the theaters in which Barry Manilow performed in Vegas from 2005-2012. The International (formerly Las Vegas Hilton Theater) is one, and Paris Las Vegas is the other. “Marilyn: A New Musical” opens its preview period tonight, with the gala premiere June 1, also Monroe’s birthday. I hear that employee comps for Manilow are scarce, incidentally, commonly an indication of strong ticket sales. The ticket-buying public is more fickle than it was when Manilow opened at the Hilton 13 years ago. But Manilow still has his fans, and so far they are to party it up at the Copa (Copacabana), the hottest spot north of Havana. - John Katsilometes (Las Vegas Review-Journal, 5/23/2018)

  • Melissa Manchester talks duet with Barry Manilow and singing backup for Bette Midler - Melissa Manchester has played with many symphonies over the years. Her father played bassoon with the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, so she was in a way raised in a symphonic atmosphere. Given that, performing with the Coachella Valley Symphony on Saturday and helping the non-profit celebrate its 25 anniversary is special for the prolific singer-songwriter (Melissa Manchester will perform with the Coachella Valley Symphony and help them celebrate 25 years during a show at the McCallum Theatre at 7 p.m. Saturday). “It’s always a thrill hearing your music manifested in its grandest form and to share the stage with live players is always a thrill,” Manchester said in an interview this week with The Desert Sun.

Manchester is known for her hits in the 1970s and '80s that include “Midnight Blue,” “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” “Through the Eyes of Love,” and “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.” She got her start in New York City playing the Manhattan club scene alongside her contemporaries and Barry Manilow and Bette Midler, with whom she's still friends today. “We were both jingle singers and so we sort of discovered each other,” Manchester said of Manilow. “And he hired me to sing on a demo of his and we were all sort of traveling in a pack of young singer-songwriters.”

And she’s still working with Manilow. Most recently the two did a duet “For Me and My Gal” for her 21st album, “The Fellas,” released in 2017. “He agreed to do the only duet on the album which was our tribute to Gene Kelly, who was not only a great masterful dancer and a silver screen star but had a beautiful singing voice. It was one of those voices I grew up with. We are old dear friends and I asked him is he would consider singing the only duet and he not only considered it, he came up with the idea which is true ... he’s a show guy so he comes up with these fantastic ideas,” said Manchester.

“The Fellas” is Manchester’s tribute to male crooners such as Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett and Dean Martin and the iconic songs they made famous. This album follows her 1989 “Tribute” album which honored all the great female singers who influenced her. She plans to perform songs from both those albums on Saturday. “It’s the first time that I get a chance to really share the journey with an audience and I’m really excited to be doing it with (the McCallum) audience,” Manchester said.

Desert Sun (DS): How did you become a back-up singer for Bette Midler?
Melissa Manchester (MM): (Barry Manilow) was the music director for Better Midler and I was playing at a club up the street from where they performed. And on their night off they both came to see me and after my set I introduced myself to Bette who had just been on the Johnny Carson Show for the first time and I congratulated her and asked her what she was up to next. And she said "I’m getting ready for my Carnegie Hall debut" and I asked her if she was thinking of having any background singers and she said "I don’t know would you like to sing in back of me" and I said "Actually I’d like to sing instead of you but in the meantime I’d be happy to sing in back of you." And Barry and I created what would be the Harlettes. I worked for her for 6 months.

DS: Are you still an adjunct professor at USC?
MM: No. I’m taking a sabbatical from USC. But I’m rather involved with Citrus Community College which is down in Glendora and that’s where Manilow came to record for “Me and My Gal.” I recorded by last two albums “You Gotta Love the Life” and “The Fellas” in their spectacular state of the art studio which is also a teaching studio. On “The Fellows” I used their student big band, the Blue Note orchestra of students, alumni and professors and it was thrilling. It was thrilling to watch everyone rise to the occasion because this music is not the genre of most of the students and so when they jumped into the deep end of this they knew they part of a large adventure and that was really exciting for them. • Review: 'Copacabana' sparkles on Naples' TheatreZone stage - Her name was Lola, and she danced her way into the hearts of Naples' theatergoers for the opening night of "Copacabana." Inspired by legendary singer-songwriter Barry Manilow's similarly titled hit song, the TheatreZone production on the campus of The Community School of Naples sparkles like a bright disco ball. With elaborate showgirl headpieces, sparkly outfits and fast-paced dance numbers, "Copacabana" proves two things: good things come in small packages in the intimate theater, and Manilow's songs are still as catchy as ever.

Thursday night, the theater transformed into a 1940s New York City nightclub. The song "Copacabana," inspired by a nightclub of the same name, was released in 1978, and later became a popular musical highlighting Manilow's many hits. The song -- and musical -- begins like this: Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl.

In the opening scene of the musical, Stephen, an aspiring songwriter, is in the middle of writing a tune that tells the story of Lola. He struggles at his keyboard to find a word that rhymes with Copacabana. He charmingly sings Montana and banana to the audience before landing on Havana. As his song unfolds, the story of Lola comes to life onstage.

The premise goes like this: Tony, who Stephen imagines as himself, is a 1940s bartender who falls in love with Lola and helps her become a Copacabana girl. Her talents and looks attract the attention of Rico, who abducts Lola and takes her to his rival nightclub in Havana. It's up to Tony to get his girl back.

The nearly two-hour production is entertaining from start to finish. Alex Jorth, who plays Tony and Stephen, oozes charm and innocence as he dances in a long tail tuxedo to "Dancin' Fool." His chemistry is undeniable with Lola, played by Haley Ondrejka. Ondrejka brings her own special energy and comedic talents to the table. As Lola, an aspiring performer, she tries standing out at auditions by awkwardly jumping on a piano and singing sensually to the casting director.

The jazzy tunes of a bygone era carry the lighthearted musical to the climax, which shifts dramatically when Rico kidnaps Lola and forces her to perform at his Havana nightclub called Tropicana. The musical conveys a change of scene seamlessly through the characters more tropical attire, including fruit on headpieces.

The characters are engaging, and some jump off stage throughout the production, reeling the audience in. • 'Copacabana' dances way into Naples' TheatreZone - The lyrics tell the story in the song that Barry Manilow decided to turn into a play. "Copacabana" -- which the legendary singer-songwriter released in 1978 -- was a hit that years later became a popular musical. It reaches Southwest Florida starting Thursday night, in the latest TheatreZone production on the campus of The Community School of Naples. “It’s a fun little vehicle for a story, to take this song that already had this story in it we all knew if you grew up in the '70s and listened to AM radio,” said Mark Danni, TheatreZone's artistic director.

For those who grew up after 1978, or never heard "Copacabana," it begins like this: Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl / With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there / She would merengue and do the cha-cha / And while she tried to be a star / Tony always tended bar / Across the crowded floor, they worked from eight til four

Alex Jorth plays Tony, and Stephen, a songwriter struggling to write a musical. The Boynton Beach resident said he's up for the challenge of playing two characters. The premise of the play is a guy, Stephen, trying to write a hit musical. It follows his thoughts to the late 1940s, as Stephen essentially builds on the original song's lyrics into a full-out production. “It was a treat to get offered the roll," he said. "It’s a great musical show. The show is all about the music, celebrating Barry Manilow’s great songs.” Manilow created an entire score for the play, so those "Fanilows" expecting to hear "Mandy" hopefully won't be too disappointed. It features tunes including "Sweet Heaven (I'm In Love Again)," one of the more popular songs in the musical.

Other key characters joining Jorth on stage in Naples include Haley Ondrejka as Lola and Carolina Ordonez of Miami, who plays the colorful Latina bombshell Conchita. Ordonez said she's enjoying the role of Conchita, who she calls "a diva with a heart of gold, an aging star who's having a hard time growing a little older and realizing that some of the parts are no longer suitable for her." Thursday night's show will be Ordonez's first performance with TheatreZone. “I’ve always heard that Naples has a great art scene, art and culture," she said. "I saw a notice and thought, hey, it’s only a two-hour drive. And because I’m of Cuban descent and have a little bit of an accent, I had an upper hand in that respect. It’s been a total blast.”

While he never saw "Copacabana" on stage, Jorth said he's attended two Manilow concerts including one of his Las Vegas shows complete with showgirls, dancers and lasers. “We’re excited to try and live up to that and present a little bit of it to the Naples audience," he said.

Danni said "Copacabana" the musical showcased even more the greatness of Manilow's songwriting. "Every song is the show is so well written," he said. "It’s that great music that he has always had the great to write. And here you have a whole score, a whole show written.”

'Copacabana': When: 8 p.m. March 8-10, March 15-17; 2 p.m. March 10-11 and March 17-18; 7:30 p.m. March 11 and March 18. Where: TheatreZone, 13275 Livingston Road (just north of Pine Ridge Road), on the campus of The Community School of Naples. Cost: $50, $60 or $75. • Music and passion return to Selkirk with the sensational Copacabana - For one week only Selkirk has become the hottest spot north of Havana. Selkirk Musical Theatre Company’s sensational toe-tapping production of Copacabana is certainly the best thing to have hit the Victoria Hall stage in an awfully long time. And hopes are high that the magical Barry Manilow musical will begin a bright new chapter for this talented production company. Music and passion have been in fashion for decades each spring in Selkirk as the town’s leading actors strut their stuff. But this year Copacabana, with all its sequins, smiles and songs, has taken the annual week-long ‘opera’ run to a whole new level. This is slick, polished and utterly sensational. And even the great Manilow himself would surely... ask for more.

Everyone already knows Stuart Mitchell is as highly a talented actor and singer as you’ll find on stages in these parts. But, as both Tony Forte and struggling songwriter Stephen, he surely produces his finest moments in the spotlight. He is convincing, charismatic and compelling throughout. The worry when someone is in such scintillating form is that it will create to a rather lopsided production. But when you have the multi-talented Lauren Gracie playing the other lead, there’s little danger of the stardom see-saw being stuck to the ground. It’s fair to say Mr. Mitchell has met his match. Lauren not only plays Lola La Mar and Samantha with the type of authority and presence you’d expect from a seasoned professional, but she also choreographed this entire production – and what choreography it is.

The Copa Girls – Zoe Hood, Donna Dodds, Rachel Inglis, Imogen Hoppe, Kara Roberts and Iona Cuthbert – perform the type of complexities you’d encounter during the final of Strictly. Yet each and every one of them can high-kick, drop-splits and boogie with the best – and all in perfect timing. And they can all sing beautifully as well.

Set in 1947 New York when the ‘boys are back from the war and everyone is in love’, Copacabana is an all-singing, all-dancing masterpiece from Manilow. The narrative is amusing and sweet, the songs are ridiculously good and the costumes are incredible. It’s imaginative in many ways with behind-curtain shadows and split stages all being used to great effect. It’s well-paced and above all it allows the talented cast from Selkirk Musical Theatre Company to show just how good they can be. For around two hours, flamboyance and fun flows from the Victoria Hall stage like the Copa cocktails. The sets are magnificent, the scene changes are creative and slick, and the score is stunning with the occasional Copacabana refrains leading wonderfully to the finale.

Producer and musical director Derek Calder should take several bows for helping create this visual and audible treat. Selkirk Musical Theatre Company’s Copacabana is a show not to be missed. It runs every evening this week from 7.30pm, with a matinee show also staged on Saturday. (Border Telegraph, 27 February 2018)

  • Hollywood’s biggest names team with Parkland students to raise millions in a single day - How appealing is the cause of the Parkland students who organized a “March for Our Lives” rally against gun violence in Washington next month? Plenty. In just one day, the student activists have seen Hollywood’s biggest names promise to cut checks for $500,000 apiece. And some have offered to march alongside the students, supporting their cause after 17 people were killed in a Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School ... Pop star Barry Manilow is also pitching in. On Tuesday, he announced that he would donate his ticket sales from his concert Wednesday night at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood to the Parkland victims’ families. The Parkland students’ GoFundMe campaign, started by junior Cameron Kasky on Sunday with a goal of $1.5 million, has raised $1.04 million from more than 14,000 donors on its own, even without the celebs’ deep pockets. • Stage group hopes Selkirk will fall back in love at the Copa - Apparently music and passion were always in fashion at the Selkirk Musical Theatre Company. And next week they aim to help the town fall back in love with musicals. The highly-talented cast are putting the final touches to the Barry Manilow stage show, Copacabana. The Selkirk singers, actors, musicians and dancers hope Copacabana will be a watershed moment in the musical company's fortunes. From next Tuesday (February 27) through to the Saturday, it is hoped the Victoria Hall will once again be standing room only as the stage is turned into Manhattan's Copacabana club. Expect plenty of dancing and singing as Lola and Tony take their first steps towards fame in post-war America - as well as yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there. Tickets are available from the Selkirk Musical Theatre's pop-up shop at 71 High Street each day from 10am to 2pm. Each evening's performance starts at 7.30pm with a matinee being staged on the Saturday afternoon from 2pm. (Border Telegraph, 21 February 2018)

  • E.C. Glass HS brings 'Copacabana' to Lynchburg - This weekend and next, you can see the first regional showing of Barry Manilow's 'Copacabana'. The show is being put on by the students at E.C. Glass High School and faculty says it’s the first time it’s been done in the region, perhaps even across Virginia. The music is played by a local band, Apple Butter Soul, that sits right on stage with the performers.

The show follows an aspiring songwriter while he is writing a show tune. Copacabana showcases flair and dancing, which the students say is their favorite part. “I just want them to have fun,” said Spencer Cohen, a senior at E.C. Glass in the show. “This show is a lot lighter so it's less about the lessons they learn and more just having that hour where everything else fades away,” said Marina Pantner, a junior at E.C. Glass. “They're just in there with us listening to this band like they're in the club too.”

The show opens on February 9th at the E.C. Glass Auditorium with a 7:00 p.m. showing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The following weekend there will be performances on Thursday the 15th as well as the following Friday and Saturday, all at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the E.C. Glass Box Office one hour before each performance or at Bloom by Doyles and the Lynchburg Visitor’s Center. For more information, email glasstheatreboxoffice@gmail.com or call 434-515-5370 x82017. • Clive Davis' Grammy Party Class Photo - On the eve of music's big night, Sony Music's chief creative officer, for the 42nd year, brought together industry titans and top talent — including Katie Couric, Ben Platt, Leslie Odom Jr., Gladys Knight, Barry Manilow, Luis Fonsi, Quincy Jones and Logic — at the Sheraton Times Square in New York. Jay Z might have received the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons Award at Clive Davis and the Recording Academy's annual Pre-Grammy Gala, but the night really belonged to the ladies. Katie Couric kicked off the proceedings at the Sheraton Times Square, introducing the 85-year-old Davis as "the original American idol," and Gladys Knight, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson gave epic performances before a room packed with such luminaries as Quincy Jones, Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Martha Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Ivana Trump, Katie Holmes, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sting. Knight joined Dear Evan Hansen's Ben Platt and Hamilton's Leslie Odom Jr. in a Broadway medley, then went solo with "Stand by Me," bringing the crowd to its feet. Keys performed piano renditions of Jay Z chart-toppers, and Barry Manilow, Luis Fonsi, Migos, Khalid and Logic also took the stage. Davis announced that Hudson had been handpicked by Aretha Franklin to play the icon in an upcoming biopic and, fittingly, Hudson closed the evening with an incendiary performance of Franklin hits, including "Respect." • Don't miss the chance to catch some rare TV drama classics on the big screen - Waris Hussein has been a leading light in film and television since the early 1960s, and will probably be most familiar to our readers as the very first, and very influential, director of Doctor Who ... There is so much more to his career. The youngest drama director employed by the BBC in 1960, Waris was the only person of South Asian descent working in that field and helmed many key plays and series in the golden age of television – winning a Bafta for Edward & Mrs Simpson in 1979. ... He’s still a viable force in the film world and it’s only fitting, as he enters his 80th year, that the British Film Institute in London is honouring him with this month-long retrospective of some of his finest work ... Tuesday 27 February 6.20pm - Copacabana (US 1985): The season closes with this shimmering, very 80s TV movie – a rare acting vehicle for Barry Manilow as a love-smitten Manhattan pianist. “Her name was Lola/She was a showgirl” etc.... • 10 Best Concerts of the Week ...Barry Manilow... - It's a pretty impressive week of music to round out the month ... Barry Manilow; 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory, 316 W. Las Colinas Blvd., 972-810-1499 or livenation.com, $59 and up. Despite his fame and success, Barry Manilow has never been taken seriously - not by self-consciously “serious” listeners and critics, anyway. Manilow does not suffer from self-consciousness, and it’s why he’s enjoyed such a broad and, at times, devoted fan base for more than half a century. Revisit mega hits like “Mandy” or “Copacabana,” and you’ll find plenty of emotional indulgences and simple-sugar hooks, but you’ll also find an immensely underrated talent for arrangement. It’s no accident he’s composed for artists as big as Bette Midler and been praised by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Bob Dylan. His music might scan as corny or sappy, but really it’s just genuine and uninhibited - more so than we’re accustomed to in modern music. The late writer David Foster Wallace once remarked that “what passes for hip ... is really some kind of fear of being really human, since to be really human is probably to be unavoidably sentimental and naive and goo-prone.” If we’re to take those words to heart, there are few artists alive as unabashedly human as Barry Manilow. • Clive Davis honored Jay-Z at his pre-Grammy gala - How to kick off a salute to Jay-Z on the eve of the Grammy Awards? With a performance by Barry Manilow, of course. That was the typically curious reasoning at work Saturday night in a glittering ballroom at the Sheraton New York Times Square, where the veteran music impresario Clive Davis gathered a crowd of show-biz insiders for his annual pre-Grammy gala. Each year the party recognizes a different player, and this time it was the hit-making rapper (Jay-Z) headed into Sunday's ceremony with eight nominations for awards including album, record and song of the year. But if the choice of honoree gave Davis' bash an on-message feel, that didn't mean that the event had any more internal logic than it usually does. Before an audience that included Beyoncé, Jerry Seinfeld, Pink, Sting, Nancy Pelosi, Timbaland, Tina Fey, John Legend, Martha Stewart and Cardi B, Manilow began the evening's performances with a deeply schmaltzy rendition of "This Is My Town," followed by "Theme from New York, New York" ... He went on to have 21 top-40 songs into the 1980s and sold more than 75 million records during his career... (Columbus Business First, 1/18/2018)

  • This week in music: 1975 Barry Manilow - Let's turn back the clock and head back to the mid-1970's. This morning the music from this week in 1975. Forty-three years ago, Billboard Magazine had these songs at the top of the Hot 100 Chart. At number five was Elton John with a remake of the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" ... Checking in at number four was Barry White with "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" ... Neil Sedaka was in the number three spot with "Laughter in the Rain" ... The Carpenters were still churning out hits in '75. [with] "Please Mr. Postman" ... And in the top spot for this week was the very first number one single by Barry Manilow. "Mandy" was originally titled "Brandy" and was a moderate hit in Great Britain back in 1971. But the song became a huge hit when Manilow covered it and changed the title from "Brandy" to "Mandy." The change was made to avoid confusion with Looking Glass's "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)." "Mandy" was the start of a string of hit singles by Manilow which stretched into the 1980's.
