  • Stars Donating Signed Items to Cancer Charity Auction - Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton are among the major pop and rock stars who have contributed signed and/or worn neck ties and other fashion accessories to an online auction to benefit Cahonas Scotland, a U.K. charity that raises awareness about cancers that specifically affect men. The Loosen Up! auction, which promotes Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, runs through this Sunday, April 24, and the items are up for bid now at eBay.co.uk.

Among the many other music artists contributing items to the sale are Rod Stewart, Queen guitarist Brian May, Barry Manilow, Tom Jones, Annie Lennox, The Pet Shop Boys‘ Neil Tennent and Elvis Costello. McCartney has donated a yellow scarf he wore in conjunction with promoting the 1984 animated film Rupert and the Frog Song. According to Cahonas Scotland, the ties, scarves and other items donated to the sale are meant to encourage men to “loosen up” and not be “tongue tied” about discussing male cancers such as testicular, prostate and breast cancer. • La'Porsha Renae, Trent Harmon share 'One Voice' with former 'Idols' - "American Idol" finalist La’Porsha Renae shows once again that she can keep up with the best of them when she opened Thursday's (April 7) finale, singing Barry Manilow's "One Voice." Renae's voice echoes as she belts out, "One voice, singing in the darkness."

The familiar voices that joined in the crowd included "Idol" contestants from throughout the years. Katharine McPhee, Constantine Maroulis, Dalton Rapattoni (from this season), Trent Harmon (Renae's competing finalist), Jordin Sparks and others were present. "We need just one voice facing the unknown, and then that one voice would never be alone," they sing.

More and more contestants pour onto the stage to share the spotlight, harmonizing seamlessly. By the end, nearly 50 voices make up an "American Idol" choir making this a proper send-off for the show that made them all -- at one time or another -- household names. (Zap2It, 4/7/2016)

  • Ticket Alert...Barry Manilow...Broadmoor World Arena - Take a step back in time [starting] with a 7:30 p.m. May 4 concert by America’s favorite lounge-act and soft-rock prince of the 1970s, Barry Manilow. • Even now, Manilow songs shine - My wife and I had a good friend over to our house a couple of weeks ago. Topics of discussion and glasses of wine started to flow, until the conversation found its way to Barry Manilow. Why Barry, you ask? It had just been announced that Manilow, who turns 73 in June, would be making a stop in Erie for what his promoters are calling the legendary singer-songwriter's last big tour. I mentioned how I'd love to score tickets to his April 25 concert at Erie Insurance Arena ... Erica was surprised, borderline shocked, and our friend didn't believe me one bit. After I played four to five Manilow hits off my iPhone, turning the kitchen into my own personal karaoke stage, they believed me. Barry's songs have made women swoon for decades. And yes, yours truly admits to having a man-crush on Brooklyn-born Barry Alan Pincus. I know I'm not alone ... Hey, if admitting love for Barry Manilow's music is wrong, then I don't want to be right. As a kid in the 1970s, I remember wearing the vinyl off my copy of Manilow's "Greatest Hits" Double LP. His heartfelt anthem, "Could It Be Magic," makes me think of an old girlfriend.

When I first saw "Foul Play," the 1978 comedy-thriller starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, I was thrilled to hear Barry's "Ready to Take a Chance Again" as the movie's theme song. The tune went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for best original song. Many of Manilow's numbers are ballads about love found and love lost, featuring catchy lyrics and mellow melodies. His work has been largely panned by music critics ... But we're talking about a man who has sold more than 80 million records, making Manilow one of the best-selling artists ever. Between 1974 and 1983, he had 25 songs that reached the Billboard Top 40. So many of his hits are ingrained into the history of American pop culture. "Mandy." "Looks Like We Made It." "Weekend in New England." And of course, the iconic disco anthem "Copacabana," and the drama between Lola, Tony and Rico. Barry fans, unite. This one's for you. (GoErie.com, 17 April 2016)

  • Nigel Lythgoe Reveals 'American Idol' Finale Secrets - Nigel Lythgoe was there for American Idol's first note and he'll be there for the last. The executive producer, who started at Pop Idol in the U.K. then transferred to the U.S. when the show was sold to Fox in 2002 (he took a few seasons off during the series' 15-year run), is helming the grand finale on Thursday night which will feature Idol alums of every stripe. He took time out from a very busy Wednesday rehearsal schedule to sit down with The Hollywood Reporter and offer a preview of what's to come ...

Hollywood Reporter: The opening song we hear is by Barry Manilow...

Nigel Lythgoe: There is something very special that precedes the opening number. When I saw it, it was inspiring to me. Back around season two, we did a Barry Manilow song called "One Voice" as a group number, so I thought how wonderful would that be to do a new arrangement where it starts with one person, then the kids who are in the top 2 and the top 3... until the stage is full of more than 50 American Idols. And it’s chilling. I think within the first four minutes of the show people are gonna be in tears. (Billboard.com, 4/6/2016)

  • I'm not a true Fanilow, but the concert was good - It was girls’ night Saturday night. My friends and I got together to celebrate our friend Kim Boldt’s birthday in a big way. We went to the Barry Manilow concert in Rockford. I have seen him perform before, but this night was for Kim. She is the true Fanilow. This was her 20th concert to see the singer, and boy did she dance during the concert. The BMO Harris Bank Center was packed. The age demographics were to be expected, and it was also a bit of a who’s who of Freeport ... But, this night was also about friendship. The core group of friends all come together to do something special to celebrate a birthday. In the past we have traveled, mostly to Chicago for a nice weekend, but I have to say this was our first concert together ... Kim’s actual birthday is not until April 4. Barry Manilow’s concert was her birthday celebration, but I know that on the day of her birthday there just may be a clink of the wine glass to acknowledge the day. Kim deserves that. For me the best part of the concert was watching Kim have her night. She stood up in her seat for most of the concert, waving her glow stick and singing all the words to the songs. She is a true Fanilow, and when one of us told her this may be the last time she was to see him, she responded by saying, “I’ll find him at another concert.” In the end, it was another successful birthday spent among friends ... Kim, I wish you an early birthday. I’m glad you enjoyed Barry, and the next drink on April 4 is on me. Happy Birthday! - Jane Lethlean (Journal Standard, 3/29/2016)

  • A Conversation About Music In The Schools - When thinking of music in schools, one would assume it’s only an extracurricular activity. Rome Free Academy (RFA) believes differently. To them, it’s a career path and the students who participate in the music programs are nurtured and prepared accordingly. NYS Music had an opportunity to talk with a local high school music educator at Rome Free Academy about past students, current students, and musical opportunities for the students in their future.

Kathy Stockbridge (NYS Music): Hi Michelle, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with our readers. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Michelle, she is a music teacher at the Rome Free Academy (RFA) ... You bring so much experience to the students at RFA, and the RFA Music Program is one of several in the Rome School District. These programs have always been supported whole-heartedly in the district. Talk to us a little about the philosophy of music in our school district and how it plays a critical role for students. How does RFA’s program stand out?
Michelle Rushford (RFA): Music is the universal language. Musical involvement improves a student’s self-discipline, dexterity, coordination, self-esteem, thinking skills, listening skills, creative abilities, cooperation, teamwork and personal expression. At RFA we provide many options to students interested in music. There are two choirs, orchestras, and bands along with other curricular music classes. There should be more to come soon as well, as we are working on adding some new music classes to the curriculum. There are also many extra-curricular activities for the students to choose from (auditioned choir groups, band and string clubs).

NYS: We have had several students go on to study music further, whether it’s professionally, teaching, music therapy, etc... How does RFA play a part in their preparation for careers in the music field?
RFA: There are so many opportunities and classes that our students get to take and experience that will definitely play a part in their future, whether it be music or something else. I tell my music students, don’t choose to pursue music as a career, that they can still go on to music in their lives as they can always sing in a band, or sing at a local event, or restaurant.

NYS: As most already know as we are all so very excited, your current A Capella Group, Fermata Nowhere, will be performing March 18 with Barry Manilow at the Turning Stone Event Center. How exciting this is? Can you share how this came about?
RFA: Yes, we are all so excited. What an amazing opportunity for these students. I am so happy that they will get to experience something so incredible. One of Barry Manilow’s production managers called RFA, as he had heard there was an A Capella group. I couldn’t believe it. “No Way, Barry Manilow?” I told him I would ask the group and get back to him. I called him the next day after dicussing it with the kids, and it was set.

NYS:We are so excited for the students and hope to be able to bring our readers highlights from that show...

Music has a silent greatness to it. Its ability to pacify anger, express emotions, tell stories, communicate beyond language barriers, and fit every person personally like a custom made piece, transcends quietly with a strength never given enough credit.

In a setting where millions of people need ways to express their individualism, music is key to doing so. In a career field that is finding its way back to listeners in new and inventive ways, these students need to nurture their passions just as much as those taking math and science courses. Not everyone is cut from the same cloth, however this bolt of fabric known as music somehow magically fits many.

Please support music education in your communities, your local musicians, and venues. Today’s students are tomorrow’s superstars. You never know if those students you see performing on the high school stage may one day be back up singers for Barry Manilow at Turning Stone! (NYS Music, 3/16/2016)

  • Comedy and costumes in Copacabana show - Thringstone Pantomime and Drama Society have just announced its latest production of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana. It will be held at Thringstone Community Centre from May 17 to 21, at 7.30pm. Expressions Dance and Drama School will be joining the group to provide the fabulous Copa Girls. The company says you can expect “lively catchy songs, lots of comedy and fabulous costumes”. The musical opens with a dream sequence showing Stephen at the front of an elegant 1940s nightclub. We are in the Copacabana of his mind. As the opening number finishes the audience finds themselves in a New York apartment in the present day and Stephen snaps back into reality. Samantha, his wife, reminds him that her parents are visiting as she wishes he spent as much time looking at her as he does his keyboard and drum machine. His song comes to life and we meet a new girl at the Copa in 1947, fresh off the train from Grand Central Station. As Lola enters the bar she meets Tony, a songwriter and performer at the bar who dances with her and the ensemble of eccentric chorus boys. Lola manages to secure an audition with the boss Sam Silver the next day. Tony watches Lola leave and decides that he is in love with her. The next day Tony and Lola go through many rounds of auditions. Lola is disappointed with the results so far and her friend Gladys gives her some helpful advice. Tony offers to play for Lola’s audition, and as Sam Shepherd stops her she thinks she has blown it. He asks her to dance more aggressively and she becomes bolder with her moves. She gets the job and Tony finds himself back in the show. There are also plenty of other exciting characters as the story unfolds. • New security at Intrust Bank Arena makes debut at Barry Manilow show - Whether it’s a big game or a concert, security is on everyone’s minds and that’s why venues across the country, including Intrust Bank Arena, are taking steps to improve security and make it faster. People waiting in line for Friday night’s Barry Manilow concert told KSN they’re thankful for the added efficiency and security that the new metal detectors bring. “They’re in effect now for all events going moving forward,” said Intrust Bank Arena General Manager, A.J. Boleski. The venue expected anywhere from 5,000-6,000 people at tonight’s concert. And everyone had to file through security before enjoying the show. “It’s been kinda driven by the industry as a whole as you go to professional sports, major league baseball, NBA, those types of things; you see this more and more,” Boleski said. “Several promoters in the concert industry are now requiring it so that kind of factored into what we’re doing today”

KSN wanted to see the security in action so we watched as people filed in and low and behold, the process was pretty fast. “This is kind of an upgrade from the wands obviously, it’s a little bit more efficient,” Boleski said. And some people waiting outside said the metal detectors make them feel safer. “There’s going to be a lot of people here tonight and I like to be sure that everybody’s safe and Barry’s safe and his band and everything. And this makes me feel really good,” said Tammy Hargis, who traveled with her husband from Topeka for the show. “I assume be safe and have them do the right thing than you know, rather having something go wrong,” said Kenny Bell, who was waiting outside the arena before the concert. There are 33 metal detectors in total and they cost nearly $130,000. They were purchased with money from the Sedgwick County Arena Reserve Fund. (KSN.com, 2/19/2016)

  • Intrust Bank Arena to use walk-through metal detectors starting with Barry Manilow concert - Intrust Bank Arena will begin using walk-through metal detectors for all events starting with the Barry Manilow concert this Friday night, the venue announced Wednesday. The arena has been using wands, searching bags and prohibiting large bags since the Taylor Swift concert in August 2013, a news release said. The walk-through detectors are another step in increasing security, the release said. Walk-through metal detectors have become more common across the country, the news release said, and the arena used them at the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concerts in December without noting any increased delays in getting people in. The arena said that the security measures will be used to prevent hazardous and prohibited items from entering the venue. Bags that are bigger than 16 inches long by 8 inches wide by 12 inches high are not allowed. A list of some of the other prohibited items can be found on the arena’s website, www.intrustbankarena.com. (The Wichita Eagle, 2/17/2016)

  • Here's Why You Can't Get That Top 40 Song Out Of Your Head - If most of the aughts were scored by Beyoncé’s pulsing successes, each more danceable and soulful than the last, then the end of 2015 was a brief fermata, a chance for another powerful voice to chime back in. If you’re a Top 40 devotee, you know that voice was Adele’s, a sorrowful croon that can burst into a vivid range of auditory flourishes on a whim. When “Hello” came out last fall, it impressed critics, who were already primed to love the edgy, young Cockney singer’s tear-jerking tunes. It also broke a lot of records. The power ballad is Adele’s fourth song to top the Billboard Top 100 charts, but her first -- and the first ever -- to sell one million digital copies in one week. “Hello” surpassed Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” in YouTube views, speaking to the song’s catchiness. Even listeners who didn’t want to commit to purchasing the track couldn’t stop replaying it, hooked by its mournful, nostalgic tone and slow-marching buildup, culminating in an explosion of feels. This Monday, she'll preform the hit live at the Grammys. To figure out what it is about “Hello” that continues to hook both Adele-lovers and reluctant fans, I spoke with David Metzer, professor of music at the University of British Columbia. He’s literally writing the book on the history of the ballad right now, so his insights seemed like they might be valuable -- and they were.

First off, Metzer cautioned against categorizing songs too stringently, especially contemporary hits, which are much more likely to incorporate disparate genres. Although Adele’s “Hello” could be classified as a power ballad, it also pulls in pop, soul and what Metzer called “singer-songwriter intimacy.” That it touches on so many sounds is part of the song’s appeal. That being said, it also follows a formula -- one that’s been employed by ballad writers in the 1970s and beyond, demonstrating a keen ability to please. “A power ballad is based on one musical formula, and simply put it's one of constant escalation. These songs begin quietly and subdued, but then it's just nonstop building step by step by step by step,” Metzer explained. “So, usually, you’ll just have piano and voice or something like that, but by the end you’ll have a full orchestra and some electric guitars and all that, so it’s just this ramp-up of emotional intensity and musical intensity.” The switch from slow build to intense release usually happens about three-quarters of the way through the song, according to Metzer. Spurred by an abrupt change of key, the jerky shift in a power ballad is referred to as a “truck driver modulation,” a sudden escalation that makes the heart soar. “You can sense it right away,” Metzer says. “It’s just like everything literally has been taken up a step.”

Metzer traces the power ballad formula -- three quarters escalation, one quarter no-holds-barred emotion -- back to a musician who ostensibly has nothing in common with Adele: the schmaltzy, Broadway-inspired Barry Manilow. “If you look at songs like 'Mandy' or even 'I Write the Songs,' he’s the one who really came up with this formula that I’ve been following, where it’s just constant escalation and modulation at the end,” Metzer said. “In fact, a critic in the early 1980s called it the 'Big Bang' formula.” It’s the basis for a bevy of '80s pop and rock hits, including Aerosmith’s head bang-inducing “Dream On,” and Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” “I think in the 1980s, you had pop and rock groups pick up on these ideas of ballads that just got bigger and bigger and bigger,” Metzer said. “I’m not sure if they were referring to the Manilow songs, but, really, in the late '70s and early '80s the Manilow songs were inescapable, so I’m sure they picked up on it in some way.” So a simple formula, and the emotional lyrics they tend to encapsulate, unites Adele’s unfiltered love letters, Barry Manilow’s show-tunesy ditties, and Poison’s gravelly insights.

Beyond the catharsis provided by these songs’ structures, Metzer believes they appeal to listeners because they provide moments of earnest emotional indulgence -- which are rarities on the bubbly, glossy Billboard charts, populated as they are with teenage dreams and cheery commands to “Shake It Off.” “If you look at pop culture, there are very few moments where you do get that unbridled release,” Metzer said. “And these songs provide them, so I think people grabbed onto them for that reason.” It’s a weighty task for a single song to carry, which is why it makes sense that Adele’s “Hello” is a big, enveloping force, with bold, broad lyrics that could describe the feelings that accompany a variety of lost loves. Adele has said that “the other side” refers to the maturity she’s discovered beyond the threshold of a rough-and-tumble youth. The song, she’s said, is about no one in particular -- an ode to everyone in the past she’s left behind. So when we sing along, we chant the mantra of a universal feeling: the creeping approach of adulthood, a smooth ride for occasional bursts of overwhelming nostalgia. • Storm-Tossed Cruise Ship Returns To N.J. - After enduring winds that topped 120 mph and waves that tossed their ship around, passengers of the Anthem of the Seas are on dry land Thursday, having cut short a planned cruise to the Bahamas. Royal Caribbean says the storm that damaged the ship and forced its return to New Jersey "far exceeded forecasts." The cruise line also says it will revise its policies about avoiding severe weather. Passengers had posted photos and video showing damage and extreme conditions on board. When the ship docked Wednesday night, passengers say, the onboard speakers played Barry Manilow's song "Looks Like We Made It" and cheering erupted from the balconies... "Our ship and our crew performed very well to keep everyone safe during severe weather," the cruise line says. And while it apologized to passengers "for what they went through," Royal Caribbean adds, "of more than 6,000 people on board, only four minor injuries were reported." (NPR, 2/11/2016)

  • Local Arts News: Orlando - The Orlando Ballet has brought in the big guns to help it pirouette its fortunes. Michael M. Kaiser, chairman of the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland and past president of Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center, will serve as a "turnaround expert" to get the Ballet back on track. By now, nearly every member of the organization except artistic director Robert Hill, has been replaced in recent years; here's hoping they finally stick the landing on this latest leap. You don't usually think of Amway Center as a venue for local artists, but two recent exceptions prove the rule. During Barry Manilow's farewell tour stop in Orlando on Feb. 2, 35 members of Central Florida Community Arts' choir were invited to act as backup singers on classics like "Copacabana." And on Feb. 28, Logan Anderson hosts "Pure Magic," a slam poetry pre-show before the Magic-76ers game... (Orlando Weekly, 2/10/2016)

  • Bandit Launches Touring Season With grandMA Console Purchases - Due to the incredible increasing demand of the upcoming year, Bandit Lites recently added several grandMA 2 consoles, grandMA 2 Lites and grandMA2 NPUs to their touring inventory as spring tours gear up and prepare to load out. “Since the Grand MA Line of consoles continues to lead the pack in lighting control, I’m excited to add more to our inventory,” said Director of Technical Services Jake Tickle. “MA Lighting continues to pave the way we think about programming and expands the possibilities of creativity.” With 4,096 parameters and 15 motorized executor faders, the grandMA 2 Lite has become an industry staple that allows infinite possibilities for lighting designers and programmers while remaining cost effective. Country music sensation Billy Currington’s Summer Forever Tour will feature the new consoles with lighting designer Chris Shrom while Mark Butt’s design for Grammy-award winning Little Big Town will take another on the road with Luke Bryan. Alternative rock band Shinedown will also include a grandMA console as will Seth Jackson’s lighting design for Barry Manilow. Along with the consoles, Bandit also added several grandMA 2 NPUs to help expand its ever growing inventory of MA2 products, giving designers better access to the industry leading console line and its accessories. • Saxophonist Reflects on Musical Legends - In a phone interview two weeks ago, I was supposed to discuss smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz’s upcoming appearance on tour with Barry Manilow at the BB&T Center. But, the conversation quickly turned to musical legend David Bowie, who suddenly died just a few days earlier, sparking worldwide reaction. “It’s funny. People who have been around for a long time, you take them for granted for a long time,” Koz said. “It’s a reason to take another look at the body of work they have created.” Koz, who is openly gay, genuinely admired Bowie, who was bisexual and brought down many sexual identity stereotypes through his alter-ego, Ziggy Stardust. “It’s amazing to look at how courageous this man was. He was genre-busting and fearless. What he stood for was so powerful at a time when nobody had the guts,” he explained. “David Bowie brought about a massive amount of change.” Ironically, Bowie’s last album, “Blackstar,” was released just two days before his death. A parting gift to fans, the album included a single, “Lazarus,” named after the Biblical character raised from the dead by Jesus. “That’s the spirit of musicians. It keeps you young, always searching. That’s where the real inspiration comes from,” Koz said of his musical hero.

The smooth jazz saxophonist, who regular appears in the region on his annual “Dave Koz & Friends” Christmas tour, returns to South Florida with another hero, Barry Manilow, on the singer and songwriter’s “One Last Time” tour. Koz, who appeared with Manilow in 30 cities in 2015, said the experience was an honor. “I grew up listening to Barry’s music,” Koz said. “When I was 13, 14, 15 years old, that was the music I loved. I really was a pop kid. Even though I played saxophone, I was raised on pop music. I remember looking at him and listening to him and absorbing his music.” Now, Koz is on the road with the icon, taking advantage of the opportunity to “see how he works,” adding, “Barry is a great performer, but he’s also a great musician. The side people don’t see is he’s always tinkering with the music to make it sound fresh every year.” Manilow may be 72, but Koz says he shows up to every performance and gives it “every bit of what he is. I want to be doing that for another 20 years. If I have breath, I want it to be going through a saxophone.” Koz himself celebrated the 25th anniversary of his own first album last year and his career continues to be “a dream.” He toured mainland China for the first time last year and was “completely blown away” by the number of fans who attended his concerts. His smooth jazz cruise of the southern Caribbean later this year has already sold out and he’s planning another in 2017 in the Mediterranean. Another album is also in the works. But, in the meantime, he’s just enjoying the opportunity to bring a little musical joy to audiences with Barry Manilow.

  • The Week Ahead: Feb. 3 to 8 - Barry Manilow has named his 2016 tour “One Last Time,” implying, well ... finality. Are we supposed to believe that this ageless road warrior really is giving up touring after this jaunt, or is it a marketing ploy? The 72-year-old pop legend says it’s true. He may play a few one-off shows, but no more national tours, recently telling the Tampa Tribune that, “I’ve had 45 years of room service, and that’s enough.” So if you’ve never heard the crooner belt out “Copacabana,” “Daybreak,” “Could It Be Magic” and his other cultural touchstones in a live setting, this may actually be the last opportunity to do so. There’s also a local tie-in that makes this swan song extra special: 35 members of the Nova Singers of Nova Southeastern University will back Manilow up on many of his iconic songs. Smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz will open the show. What: Barry Manilow. Where: BB&T Center, 1 Panther Parkway, Sunrise. When: 7:30 p.m. Cost: $19.75-$179.75. • ONJ and Marie Osmond bond at NBT - Nevada Ballet Theatre’s Black & White Ball was once more a celebration of the city’s artistic heritage, philanthropic spirit and pure star power. A superstar friend and contemporary, Marie Osmond, joined this year’s Woman of the Year honoree, Olivia Newton-John, onstage. The speech by Osmond introducing Newton-John to the crowd at Wynn Las Vegas’ Latour Ballroom was a dandy. She recalled meeting Newton-John during “The Donny & Marie Show” in the late 1970s, and that Newton-John was so vocally flawless, sweet and pretty that Osmond couldn’t find any reason to resent her ... A lengthy videomontage of Newton-John’s career was played, covering her time as a young country star through “Grease,” “Xanadu,” “Physical” and her walk across the Great Wall of China to mark her battle with breast cancer. Paying tribute via video were such stars as Barry Manilow, John Travolta, Julianne Hough, Didi Conn, Jane Lynch and Richard Marx. Newton-John took the stage and said, “Wow, I did all that?” The body of work, including 100 million records sold, 10 No. hits and the legacy of “Grease” and her continuing run at Flamingo, is truly remarkable. • Manilow worried people would miss deeper meaning of 'I Write the Songs' - Today's Morning Edition music is from "I Write the Songs" by Barry Manilow, which was No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart 40 years ago [January 17, 1976]. The song was actually written by Bruce Johnston, best known as a member of the Beach Boys. Johnston said it's about the general notion of where music comes from. In his eyes, it comes from God. At first, Manilow was reluctant to record the song because he felt that if you didn't listen closely to the words you would think he was talking about himself and would sound like an egomaniac. It won a Grammy Award as the 1976 Song of the Year. (Minnesota Public Radio, 1/21/2016)

  • Famous Songsters You Never Knew Were Musical Theatre Writers - Before they wrote "It's Raining Men" and "Total Eclipse of the Heart" the talents behind these pop songs (and others) actually wrote musicals. What other karaoke staples have theatre-writer roots, artists who are widely known for working consistently in musical theatre and pop music [but] actually started out writing for the stage before moving on to careers as radio hit-makers? ... #10 Barry Manilow. Most famous songs: "Mandy," "Copacabana (At The Copa)," "Can't Smile Without You." Musical he wrote before his songwriting career: The Drunkard, Now(musical director, arranger). In 1964, when he was only 21 years old, Barry Manilow wrote music and lyrics for an Off-Broadway show called The Drunkard, which played for eight years at the 13th Street Theatre. The Drunkard was a 19th-century melodrama, very different from Manilow's next prominent off-Broadway credit, Now, a topical revue. Now only ran for three weeks, and as the 1960s ended, Manilow moved away from theatre (although he'd be back!) and focused on his soon-to-be skyrocketing singer-songwriter career. Manilow has later returned to his theatre roots, working on projects like Copacabana and Harmony, but he has yet to reach Broadway with an original musical. On "The Today Show" in 2013, Manilow shared: "When I started, [writing musicals was what I really] wanted to do, and then the record career took off and we just never found [the] five years that you need to [make] a bona fide musical [happen]." • Manilow’s stage presence among unmissable concert moments in 2016 - A new year means a new lineup of concerts at music venues in and around Wichita. And even though in January we likely know only a small portion of the acts that will pass through Wichita at venues such as Intrust Bank Arena, the Orpheum, and Salina’s Stiefel Theatre, so far, the 2016 list rocks...

#1 -- Barry Manilow, Intrust Bank Arena, Feb. 19: Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, I was aware of Manilow’s cheesy-yet-peppy song catalog, but I kept it pushed into the back of my consciousness. When I saw Manilow perform at the arena in 2012, though, his stage presence and production quality quickly turned me into a "Fanilow." He swung his recently reconstructed hips, chatted and joked warmly with the audience and delivered hits like "Can’t Smile Without You," "The Old Songs" and "Looks Like We Made It." Three years later, I still tell people about his rendition of "Mandy," which Manilow performed alongside a video projection of a younger version of himself. Goosebumps!

I won’t be missing Manilow when he returns next month. Tickets: $19.75, $59.75, $79.75, $99.75 and $149.75 at www.selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-7328, at Select-a-Seat outlets and at the Intrust Bank Arena box office. - Denise Neil

  • The Best of Miami's Gala Season 2015 - Miamians never turn down a good reason to get fancy, especially when our beloved charities are the recipients of the community's largesse. There were too many black-tie events to count -- often, up to four a weekend -- celebrating milestones and raising millions of dollars for causes dear to our hearts... including #6: International superstar Barry Manilow captivated over 400 guests with a concert at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County's 9th Anniversary Gala on April 24, 2015. A special tribute to Frank Sinatra in honor of Sinatra's 100th birthday, the event was held at the Ziff Ballet Opera House, which was transformed into an intimate supper club with cocktails, dinner, and dancing directly on the Lynn Wolfson Stage. Monies raised by the Gala were reinvested into the Arsht Center's educational programming. In addition to the extensive programming, The Center hosts 12 signature series, including the largest jazz series in South Florida, the biggest flamenco festival on the East Coast (who knew?), and an arts education program that serves nearly 30,000 children each year. Margaret and Mike Eidson joined philanthropists Swanee and Paul DiMare to form the Gala leadership committee. • Halton drama students wow the audience with Barry Manilow's musical - Halton drama students wowed audiences with a magnificent performance of a well known musical. Cronton sixth formers staged Copacabana, written by Barry Manilow. Three shows were a sell out and they also played to an audience of pupils from Wade Deacon High School. Ritchie Redmond, 19, of Whitchurch Way, Halton Lodge, Runcorn played Stephen, Emma Passey, 18, of Ash Lane, Widnes was Samantha and Lola La Mar. Chloe Astre, 17, of Tibbs Cross Lane, Widnes played Conchita Alvarez and Reuben Austin, 17, of Hampton Drive, Widnes was Rico Castelli. Students received wonderful feedback from the audience.

One person who watched the show said: "The production was fantastic, there was clear dialogue and lively music. After being lucky enough to see several productions in the West End, I left the hall with the same sense of well-being."

Matt Plant, head of the centre of excellence for performing arts, said: "This was a real departure for us and hugely inspired by our backstage trip at the Moulin Rouge earlier this year. We wanted to do something that would appeal to many different members of our audience and Barry Manilow certainly seems to get people up and about. Most of all it enabled us to use our wonderful dancers and this, together with our hard working and hugely committed students, became our biggest success to date." • See the story behind the song at the Victoria - Barry Manilow fan or not, you’ll be singing along to 'Copacabana' at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax, next week. Halifax Light Opera Society presents the musical based on the Manilow song everyone knows. It’s all glitz and glamour in the award winning musical, which expands the story in the song. The theme of the song prompted singer and composer Barry Manilow to come up with a full scale musical which took the West End by storm. The show, starring Ashley Wade as Tony and Amy Straw as Lola, has been delighting audiences in Britain, the USA and further afield since 1994, and as the song goes: "At the Copa, Copacabana..." - see you’re singing it already. "People are bound to leave the theatre singing its title song," said director Kathryn Beverley. Tickets range from £14. Contact Victoria Theatre box office 01422 351158 or go to website www.victoria theatre.co.uk. (Halifax Courier, 07 November 2015)
