First Show: Barry came across as a real person (not just up-on-stage doing a performance with no feeling at all [like other] performers). Barry came across so much more REAL. - Gretchen Kohlweiler (Annapolis, MD) (11/22/99)

We would go to the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia each time Barry was there. We sat right near the stage the first time and I remember being able to see his socks, we were that close! As he became more popular, the seats we got were farther away from the stage. But always the best show ever. We continued through the years to go - even when I was 7 months pregnant. - Bernadette Sikorski (Blackwood, NJ) (2/12/2002)

March 16 Highlights: It's A Miracle / Cloudburst / One Of These Days / A Very Strange Medley (including Dr. Pepper, State Farm, Stridex, Vitalis, Franco American, Bathroom Bowl Blues, Schaefer Beer, Pepsi, McDonald's) / Sweetwater Jones / I Am Your Child / Seven More Years / Could It Be Magic / Easy Evil / Friends / Sweet Life / It's A Miracle (Reprise)

Dionne Warwicke was the headliner. Also on the bill were War and Jane Olivor. First heard Barry under the stars, in Central Park, with my first main boyfriend... no wonder I fell in LOVE with the man and his music (Barry). "Could It Be Magic" and the "Very Strange Medley" brought tears, albeit for different reasons. BARRY IS THE BEST!! - Carol Whitton (1/19/2002)

Memories

Thanks, Steven, for the 1974 Tour information!
October 21, 1974Pennsylvania/Philadelphia
(The Bijou Cafe')
First/Favorite Show: I had heard "Could It Be Magic" on the radio and bought the album. I heard about the concert on a radio show and drove up (alone - nobody else had heard of him!). He was doing two shows a night (I stayed for both!). And the early show had maybe 30-40 people in the audience. I returned three times that week (the audience size grew as the week wore on). Saw the show six times, and got an autographed picture from him. His opening act was Andy Kaufmann!! I remember how strange Andy was, almost as much as I remember what a charismatic performer Barry was even then (his second solo gig). There was a review in the Philadelphia newspaper talking about how nobody's heard of Barry Manilow yet, but he was destined for stardom. I saved the article because I was also sure of it! He has grown so much as a performer, of course, but even now I remember how privileged I felt to be witness to such a wonderful new talent and how smug I felt knowing I was so smart, being one of the very first to do so. - Judy Hammond (Wilmington, DE) (5/11/2000, 5/15/2000)

(The Bottom Line)
It was 1974. My best girlfriend called me and told me to put on Channel 7 Eyewitness News. They were doing a piece on a new commercial jingle writer named Barry Manilow. Did I want to see him perform at 'The Bottom Line' with her? Many years have passed and I have seen Barry perform in various venues all over New York City, and he is a New Yorker! The Bottom Line was a very small, intimate club located in NYC's Greenwich Village. The '70s in NYC was a very different time from what it is now (Crime was up... Son of Sam... 1977 Blackout). I remember the evening so well... smoking was allowed then. A new talent was being discovered and we were all thrilled and excited to be a part of it. Hearing him sing all the jingles while introducing "Mandy," my favorite Barry Manilow song. I love saying that "I remember him when..." - Marie Amundsen (New York City, NY) (4/4/2011)
