Manilow Archives: March 16th, 1974!

Check out this note from Barry regarding this month's very special and never released audio file from 1974 on www.manilowarchives.com:

Hi Everyone,

Well, this month I’ve chosen a very rare and special Audio file for you guys to listen to.

It’s the closing night at the Bijou Café in Philadelphia.

The date March 16th, 1974!!

I had agreed to do a few live shows to promote my first album. My three-song-set during Bette Midler’s hugely successful tour the year before had gotten a positive response and a handful of clubs agreed to take a chance on me.

The week before we played The Bijou Café, we were booked in a rotten dive in Boston called Paul’s Mall. I was the opening act for jazz trumpet player, Freddie Hubbard. A very bad fit.

It was my very first solo show and it was such a horrible experience I decided that performing just wasn’t for me and tried to cancel the rest of the tour.

My agent pleaded with me to just do the Philadelphia date because business was good there and I was headlining. He said that if I felt the same way about The Bijou date, we would cancel the rest of the dates.

I agreed. And boy, am I glad I did!

This was THE turning point in my life. If I hadn’t agreed to play The Bijou Café in Philadelphia, and if that audience hadn’t been so kind to a bumbling kid with music in his soul, I wouldn’t be writing to you today.

Enjoy this one, my friends.

With love and thanks,
Barry
