The Sioux City Community School District is one of the five lucky districts across the United States that was awarded money from the Barry Manilow Project. The Sioux City Public Schools Foundation submitted a video in May in hopes of getting money to buy new instruments. The group's executive director Kari Treinen said this will help middle and high school students who can't afford instruments. "We have 70% of our students in the Sioux City Community School District qualify for the free or reduced meal program. That's the only poverty indication that the school district has access too. It shows us that a lot of students can't buy or rent because they don't have the money at home to buy because of the basic needs. We really believe music is a basic need because it helps our students academically, socially," said Sioux City Public Schools Foundation executive director, Kari Treinen. She said the $20,000 should be able to purchase 20 to 25 instruments for the upcoming school year.
