Memories
September 12California/San Diego
(Symphony Hall)
Favorite Show (September 12): I had seen Barry lots of times before, but I have to say Opening Night was the highlight of my Manilow experience. Even from the back of the theater -- I usually sit right down front with fan club seating, and I use to work for Bass Ticket Master and always got KILLER seats for anything I wanted -- I was entranced. The opening they did (for this show only) was heart-stopping. I LOVE my broadway show songs and "Showstoppers" was a good title. All the curtains and lead-in music was almost too emotional for me. I truly love the talent this man possesses. - Randy Richards (Kauai, Hawaii) (4/14/2002)

September 12 Highlights: Overture of Overtures, Give My Regards To Broadway, Where Or When, Fugue For Tinhorns, It's A Miracle (Guys & Dolls arrangement), Luck Be A Lady, I Don't Want To Walk Without You (with Donna Cherry and piano bicycle), Memory (from "Cats"), The Kid Inside (from "Life After High School"), All I Need Is The Girl, Real Live Girl...

September 13 Highlights: Give My Regards To Broadway, Where Or When, Luck Be A Lady, Real Live Girl, Once In Love With Amy, Let Freedom Ring, Fascinatin' Rhythm, Copacabana (featuring Donna Cherry in the Broadway style of Julie Andrews, Cher, Dolly Parton, Madonna, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Rivers, Barbra Streisand), I Am Your Child (featuring Debra Byrd, in the style of Dream Girls), Daybreak (in the style of Cabaret), Sweet Heaven (in the style of A Chorus Line, Could It Be Magic (in the style of Phantom Of The Opera), I Made It Through The Rain (in the style of Carousel), This One's For You / They Write The Songs, Give My Regards To Broadway (reprise), Never Met A Man I Didn't Like, Old Friends/I'll Be Seeing You

September 14 Highlights: ...Who Needs To Dream, Once In Love With Amy, Even Now (in the style of My Fair Lady), Read 'Em And Weep (in the style of Gilbert & Sullivan), New York City Rhythm/Big Fun (in the style of 42nd Street), Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again (in the style of George Gershwin), Weekend In New England (in the style of The Fantasticks), Mandy (in the barbershop quartet style of The Music Man), Hey Mambo (in and Somewhere In The Night (in the style of West Side Story)...

October 8Massachusetts/Boston
(Wang Theater)
Barry gave (for free!) front row seats to his concert when he came to our area that year. We got the tickets because we had attended the Hot'lanta Convention that summer and because he was unable to come to the convention as promised, the seats were a gift and his way of saying "sorry" for not being there. What a guy!! I had "the best seat in the house!" - Carol (of Massachusetts) (2/7/2002)

It was a great combination of the old material and a good amount of Broadway songs. - Ralph P. Gagnon (North Yarmouth, ME) (3/19/2002)

First Show - Becky Cataloni (of Massachusetts) (10/9/2002)

1991 was the year I waited 19 hours to get tickets for Barry's amazing Showstoppers Tour. I got tickets for EVERY show at the Wang Theater and two were Front Row! The Wang Theater is a beautiful old theatre in the heart of Boston's Theatre district, also known as Boston's "Combat Zone", so we were not in the safest situations! It was a very long cold night but it was all very well worth it! All was going very well for me until I got very sick, so I only got to see two of Barry's shows at the Wang Center (including one night from the front row) ... I still get goosebumps all over when I hear Barry's amazing "Showstoppers" CD, not only for Barry's great voice and all of the wonderful music, but also because it reminds me of the [concert experience and time spent waiting to get the tickets]. Am happy and thankful that we can now order BMIFC concert tickets on the phone and on-line! But for those of you who also waited in line, thank you very much for helping us all "Keep each other warm" by laughing and talking about Barry all night long (...and keeping each other's place in line during our few bathroom breaks at the hotel across the street!!). Thank you, Barry, from the bottom of my Mani-Lovin' little heart! - Lisa Whitney (Keene, NH) (9/19/2004)

I went to Barry's concert four nights in a row. After getting tickets I was walking down Tremont Street and I could swear I passed by Barry! He was walking toward me, and if it was him, I will never forget the sweetest and warmest smile I have ever seen. Wish I had met him at the concert! I will always enjoy his music. - Donna (of Lisbon, NH) (9/1/2009)

Barry is so talented and funny. No person can compare! - Bridget Kaskeski (Dedham, Massachusetts) (3/12/2012)

Barry, I can't believe that it has been 23 years since I first saw you at the age of 16 at the Wang Theater. I remember it vividly. My parents told me that they had gotten tickets to see "Barry Manilow." I remember saying who's that!? I remember by the end of your show I was in tears. I had loved the show so much. Since then I think I have seen you about 15 times. Wow, time really flies by, doesn't it? Well, you have certainly left many people with wonderful memories. Because of you I have never given up on romance. Always a hopeful romantic.I can't smile without you! - Melissa Lang (College Station, Texas) (formerly Boston, Massachusetts) (11/24/2014)

I was dragged against my will to see this [guy]. He gained my respect though when he started rapping. But Barry must now watch himself 'cause of the whole Eastside-Westside rivalry... - 'Stan the Man' (8/24/98)

It was a great show!  It was such a colorful tour that year. It was his Showstoppers Tour!  It was Awesome! I have been a fan of Barry's since 1976. He is so awesome in every way possible! - Brenda C. Jozwiak (St. Clair, MI) (2/11/2000, 1/29/2003, 11/26/2004)

Favorite Show: He played wonderfully to a very enthused crowd and it was a great mix of songs. - Laurie Kortas (of Michigan) (10/23/2000)

Favorite Show: I like Broadway music and Barry sang a lot of those songs. - Judy Barman (Farmington Hills, MI) (7/27/2003)

I met Barry that morning at Harmony House Records during an autograph signing. He was wonderful, just a real gentleman! So nice, and I even caused him to burst into laughter! That day ranks up there with my wedding day and birth of my children! - Marilynn Dowdy-Sulkanen (Saline, Michigan) (12/4/2012)

When he was in Detroit for his Showstoppers show, while people were leaving I went up top the stage, he came back and I took his picture. I think I blinded him for a minute! - Norm Lamoureux (Ontario, Canada) (4/17/2021)

Best Show Memory: I have a background in musical theatre and was most impressed with how Barry was able to do many of his own songs in the styles of other composers... The show highlighted Barry's talent for working with music. - Ken Traynor (8/12/97)

Favorite Show (November 21st):  There was a wonderful intimacy in the theatre. It's smaller than Rosemont or Poplar Creek. That night was within five days of the 12th anniversary of my mother's death...Barry reminisced about his grandmother and sang "Sunrise, Sunset" - I cried - My mother had sung that song many times - I was raised on show tunes for lullabyes. His rendition and candidness as he went from song to song touched me. - Marianne Martinez (Chicago, IL) (12/3/98)

First Show (November 21) - Paulette Petracco (Westchester, IL) (4/1/2000)

Favorite Show: I enjoyed the entertaining aspect of the show, the all-around entertainment that was present. It must have taken time to think of this show - not just the same old song [arrangements]. - Melissa Meehan (Maumee, OH) (6/16/2004)

Saw the show three times! Twice in the front row. Won backstage tickets, met THE MAN, got a personal photo with him. It was awesome! Amazing energy with the entire ensemble! Barry always gives His All... dancing, choreography, and (Lord Have Mercy!) that VOICE!! Only one in comparison is Debra Byrd. She performed "I Am Your Child" ... blew me away. Couldn't help myself - I gave her a standing ovation. I was a single mom of 5 at the time, so it really hit home. All time favorite song! I grew up in the orchestra, and of course, Barry was my mentor. What is going on with the Music Arts in school these days? Thank you, Barry, for your foundation. We need more musical magic in our future. God Bless, we love you! Keep the music playing!! - Lisa Clay (originally from Chicago, Illinois, now in West Virginia) (4/21/2012)

This was a gift from my husband. He had gotten great seats from a friend... He added a weekend at the hotel across the street, all to help me through [a rough time] (my mom had a terminal illness). I'm a major Barry fan. I fell in love with his music and have found my life in his songs. - Ellen Ganschaw (Kenosha, Wisconsin) (6/5/2012)

Favorite Show (November 20): Barry sang "Who Needs To Dream"! - Dean Herron (Crestview Hills, Kentucky) (2/5/2020)

Show Memory: I was going to college in Ames, Iowa at the time. I convinced my best friend to take me (a "macho guy" who happens to like Barry). Only one problem - the day of the concert we were having a winter storm. Both of our parents were concerned about us driving that far in bad weather so at the last minute my dad said he would drive us. What should have been a 3-hour drive took SIX. My parents ended up buying tickets...we all really enjoyed the show. The next day it all seemed like a dream, but definitely a great one! - Kimberly Berry-Schmidt (4/15/97)

First Show (November 29) - Rebecca (of Vancouver, WA) (9/27/2004)

It was a bad snowstorm and Barry came out on stage and said he "couldn't believe we would come out in such bad weather just to see him." I would have walked there if I had to! - Janis Hooker (Spring Lake Park, MN) (6/6/2010)

There was a blizzard in the dead of winter and we drove and thought, "Are we crazy?" When we got there everyone showed up and Barry couldn't believe it! There was a beautiful pink spot light outside the venue and when it hit the snow it was something else. His concert was show tunes. He always makes my heart sing. - Joan Rubinstein (of Florida) (2/1/2018)

December 3Ohio/Cleveland

Good concert as usual, then I got to meet Barry after the show through a radio contest we won! It was a cool day, I will never forget!! - Kelly (11/28/97)

First/Favorite Show (December 3):  I've never been to one of his concerts until that night. I won a contest "Breakfast with Barry Manilow". A local radio station was promoting his concert, so I sent in my postcards (all five of them), [thinking that I wasn't] going to win, but boy was I wrong! The station [called] and told me that I had won and was going to meet Barry on opening night!! ...  I had to meet with the other winners [downtown]. Arriving at the theater in a white limo, I felt like a queen, a celebrity for one night and it felt great! A member of Barry's staff (Charlie) asked me if I've ever been to one of his concerts. I told him this was my first concert. He told me I wouldn't be disappointed and I wasn't. The show lasted two hours, but it [felt like] two minutes ... When I saw Barry standing on stage, I was mesmerized. Seeing Barry on stage was a dream come true for me, and meeting him was also great. I only wish I could do all again, he's truly a gentlemen. It Was A Night To Remember! Thanks for the memories Barry!! - Ollie Rucker (Cleveland, OH) (7/26/98)

Love the concert he put on!!  I went to two shows (that year). He was there for the week!!  I've been a fan since '74, but didn't start going (to see him) until '85. All the memories are great!  Thank You, Barry, for your songs and my Barry Friends!!  A Fan, Forever And A Day. - Yamallat Abed (Parma, OH) (5/5/99)

What a spectacular venue, and the opportunity to see Barry 5 nights in a row was amazing! - Maria Basch (Denver, CO) (4/26/2009)

Got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have my photo taken with Barry outside the Ohio Theater before the show -- me and 2 other fans -- Barry asked me if I wanted my photo taken. I was beside myself! On cloud 99!! - Ken Payer (Bethel Park, Pittsburgh, PA) (2/14/2011)

First Show - Rose Marie Bilka (Garfield Heights, Ohio) (6/6/2011)

Favorite Show (Showstoppers): I loved every minute, but the most memorable part was when Barry rode a bike in a circle around the stage. It had a piano strapped to the handle bars. Fun, funny, and amazing! - Andy Walton (Columbus, Ohio) (7/7/2011)

12/7 Highlights: Overture of Overtures / Give My Regards To Broadway / Where Or When / I Don't Want To Walk Without You / You'll Never Walk Alone/I Made It Through The Rain / Fugue For Tinhorns (with Kevyn and Craig) / The Kid Inside (with cast) / Memory (from CATS) / All I Need Is The Girl / Real Live Girl / Who Needs To Dream / Once In Love With Amy + encore / Send In The Clowns/Looks Like We Made It / But The World Goes 'Round / Fascinatin' Rhythm / Baby, It's Cold Outside / BROADWAY MUSICAL TRIBUTE (Even Now [in the style of My Fair Lady], Read 'Em And Weep [Gilbert & Sullivan...& Manilow], New York City Rhythm [42nd Street-style], Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again [Gershwin-style], Jump Shout Boogie [Fats Waller-style], Try To Remember/Weekend In New England [Fantasticks-style], It's A Miracle -and- (barbershop quartet) Mandy [Music Man-style], Somewhere In The Night [West Side Story-style], Copacabana [Donna Cherry in the Broadway style of Julie Andrews as well as Cher, Dolly Parton, Madonna, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Rivers and Barbra Streisand], I Am Your Child [Debra Byrd in the style of Dreamgirls], Can't Smile Without You [A Chorus Line-style], Could It Be Magic [Phantom of the Opera-style], You'll Never Walk Alone/Impossible Dream/One Voice [Carousel-style], This One's For You/They Write The Songs/Give My Regards To Broadway (Reprise)) / If We Only Have Love / Jingle Bells

First Show (December 28) - Kim (of Lakewood, CA) (9/13/99)

December 29: This was my first trip to LA and I was having a ball. I was visiting my friend out there and she had gone to Fullerton Savings Bank and gotten a package deal through them to see Barry. We got round trip transportation and snacks before the show. The tickets were not real close, but this was the "Showstoppers" tour and it was fun to see it from a distance. When all the Broadway show signs dropped from the ceiling on the stage it made for a real eye popper. This was also the show that Barry went to sing "Memory" and he started to play the song and then stopped. Tried again and stopped and finally said "How does this one go?" We all died laughing with him and finally he was able to sing it for us. - Kathy Davis Eaton (8/11/97)

December 30: All I can say about this one was FRONT ROW. I was able to sit on the front row for the first time thanks to the BMIFC. My girlfriend and I were right down at his feet. It was a real experience and probably the only way you would ever get me on an airplane again is the promise of front row seats. Barry started to sing "Memory" and he started to smile remembering what happened the night before. All of us who had been to the previous show started to laugh and Barry told the tale of what happened and then said you had to be there. - Kathy Davis Eaton (8/11/97)

Favorite Show (December 31):  I was pulled on stage (by Debra Byrd) to help ring in the New Year. When I first got on stage, I screamed and ran to Barry and gave him a hug. When I was on stage, my balloon popped. Barry laughed, walked over to me and gave me another hug, saying "Oh, it had to happen to you, too, she was having heart failure already."  After everyone rang in the New Year, I danced with Barry and was escorted off the stage and back to my seat. I got to go backstage where a few celebrities were there, including my favorite singer Sam Harris, Bernadette Peters and David Cassidy. I also got to personally thank Barry for a perfect evening and tell him that my life was saved the first time I saw him in 1988 ... Thank you, Barry, for being an inspiration to us. - Stacy Jackline (Upland, CA) (4/6/2000)
