December 27, 2015 The Desert Sun"Barry Manilow, a Gift of Love III Concert" by Marge Dodge
He writes the songs that make the whole world sing, and for five nights Barry Manilow sang his hit songs and holiday favorites in the Gift of Love III concert, benefitting 30 Coachella Valley non-profit organizations.

Manilow exploded onto the holiday themed stage in a red sequined jacket singing “It’s a Miracle,” and effortlessly continued to delight the sold-out McCallum Theatre crowd for two hours. He thanked the audience for supporting local charities and said, “All kids should have the opportunity to play a musical instrument. Music will change a young person’s life.” Manilow founded one of the beneficiaries of the event, the Manilow Music Project to provide musical instruments and scholarships to students nationwide.

COD Foundation Executive Director Jim Hummer joined Manilow on stage to sing the praises of previous concert donations that created COD musical scholarships and the Barry Manilow Lab which serves over 200 students with 24 electric pianos. Two scholarship recipients Gisselle Contreras and Gilbert Olivera attended the concert.

The Living Desert (another charity benefitting from the show) was represented by its President and CEO. Allen Monroe, who brought along a red-tailed hawk and a horned owl to represent the Living Desert.

Just when you thought the show couldn’t get any better, Santa arrived in a sleigh with the Washington Charter Honor Choir singing Christmas carols with Manilow. “Snow” and streamers fell on the exuberant crowd for a magical finish. For 30 charities from ACT for MS to Well on the Desert, this concert series was a “true blue miracle,” a gift of love to so many from Barry Manilow.

December 12, 2015 The Desert Sun"Barry grateful for acceptance of his marriage and music" by Bruce Fessier
Barry Manilow wraps a five-night musical present Sunday night at the McCallum Theatre. His "Gift of Love III" concerts have raised more than $500,000 to be divided up among 30 local charities. His efforts will help people recover from strokes, manage serious ailments such as HIV, muscular sclerosis, cerebral palsy and cancer, and it will put instruments in children’s hands.

But it is Manilow who is feeling grateful. At 72, he’s grateful to still be able to sell out arenas – one of a half-dozen of septuagenarians capable of such a feat, along with Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and Neil Diamond.

He’s grateful he can record virtually anything he wants for Verve Records and be rewarded almost annually with a Grammy nomination – an amazing turnaround from when he was a critics’ punching bag. He earned his second Grammy nod in a row and fifth in eight years on Monday for "My Dream Duets," putting him in an even rarer group of senior stars, including 89-year-old Tony Bennett.

And he’s grateful to lead a legion of fans he now views as friends after they helped him overcome his years of stage fright as a former accompanist and jingles composer suddenly thrust into the role of entertainer.

Most of all, he’s thrilled his "Fanilows" have embraced his marriage to his long-time manager and partner, Garry Kief. Many of the 5,000 attendees who made pilgrimages to the McCallum this week say his coming out has had no negative impact on their deep admiration for him.

"Not at all," said Ellen Kotter, who flew from Florida to attend the first "Gift of Love" concerts Tuesday and Wednesday. "I think it’s wonderful. It doesn’t matter who it is you’re married to, who your partner is in life. As long as you’re happy with that person, that’s all that matters. I give him credit for being able to express that part of him. I embrace it. I’m so happy for him and Garry. I think it’s just something that’s meant to be."

Helen Holdun, a Palm Springs-based fan who keeps in regular contact with Manilow’s international fan clubs, says that attitude is consistent with all of the peers she knows.

And Manilow is especially grateful for that. "In my life, I never would have imagined that nobody was upset about it," Manilow said in a yard that doubles as a veritable dog park for friends who visit his expansive South Palm Springs estate with canines. "They went beyond not upset. Everybody was just so happy for me that I wasn’t alone and I had somebody and that, we’ve been together for so long."

The National Enquirer broke the news in April that Manilow and Kief had been married the previous year in a private ceremony attended by 30 to 50 friends and family members. Kief declined to comment, saying he’s not a public person. Manilow said it wasn’t a formal wedding. "It was planned last year that all my family was going to be here on Thanksgiving," he said in his first public statement about his marriage. "It was going to be a Thanksgiving thing and then Garry and I just announced it. We didn’t really have a ceremony. Not down here. We just went 'Tap, tap, tap' on a glass and 'I just wanted to tell you all that Garry and I got married.' We’re so private. We’ve been together for 37 years now. We thought it’s time to do it. And not just because I think it’s going to last!"

Manilow had trepidations when someone leaked the news of their marriage to a tabloid. "Not because we were ashamed," he said. "I’m very proud of us. We’re two gentlemen and I have nothing to hide. It’s just that I’m a very private man. There’s a door I will not open unless I invite you in. The press has wanted to get into my pants ever since 1974. They’ve tried to do that and they’d given up. Then suddenly the Enquirer comes (along). They outed us. I don’t know who gave that information to the Enquirer, but, you can just say I was thrilled about the reaction to it. So I guess it was OK."

Manilow credits a mass change in attitude toward gay men and women for the acceptance of his marriage. "It changed in the blink of an eye," he said. "It was something you had to be ashamed of and, in the blink of an eye, nobody cares."

But the attitude toward him professionally also has changed over the past couple decades. The fans have always liked him, but now critics seem to realize there’s something special about this power pop balladeer that goes even beyond being the best-selling adult-contemporary recording artist of all time. The way fans like him isn’t the way Beliebers react to Justin Bieber or Beatlemaniacs went crazy over the Beatles. There’s a physical reaction over seeing Manilow in concert, just as there was for musical idols going back to Frank Sinatra. But Fanilows say their exposure to Manilow is therapeutic.

Holdun, a 55-year-old support services coordinator for international transfer students, credits listening to Manilow for ending 18 years of panic attacks and actually making her more productive. "When I hear Barry's voice, I feel energized, exhilarated," she said. "I immediately want to be, do, reach higher, accomplish, achieve more of what I know I'm capable of. No other human being, in any walk of life, has or ever had that effect on me. I think it's because when he sings he doesn't merely express his own emotion, but rather allows me to safely acknowledge what I'm feeling, like a good therapist does. For example a good therapist doesn't cry with a sad patient about his own sadness, but rather uses that empathy as a blank page for the patient to discover his or her own story to then express it."

Kotter, a 59-year-old medical transcriptionist from Naples, Florida, says Manilow’s music inspired her to begin to recover from alcoholism. "I’ve been dry for six-and-a-half years," she said. "It all started when I heard his song, ‘Please Don’t Be Scared" (from his 1999 self-titled LP, written by Mindy Sterling). I was drinking very early that morning. 7 o’clock. By 10 o’clock, I was wasted. I went out and saw my mother and found out how disappointed in me she was. I went home because a neighbor told me to go home and take a nap and sleep it off. I randomly took two of Barry’s CDs and put them on a five-disc CD player. I woke up and this song came on. I sat up and listened to it and played it over and over again. Tears were coming down my cheek and I knew right then and there it was time to give it up. Since then, I’ve just been a big fan."

The lyrics to that song say:

Please don't be scared ‘cuz I've stood there too
Between survival and the right thing to do
‘Cuz only the strong, admit their fears
And if you really need me, I'll always be here

Kotter has only been to seven of Manilow’s concerts – a fraction compared to some women at this week’s "Gift of Love" concerts. But she’ll often take a break from work to listen to his music to reduce her stress or play it at night to help her go to sleep. And that’s not an unusual among Manilow fans. "The people I know who have met him and who consistently listen to his music, it’s amazing some of the things they say," Kotter said. "His music has been therapeutic for people who are blind, who have gone through bad relationships or the drinking like I have. The healing that he gives to all of us is something I’ve never felt from any other artist. I feel a personal connection with him. I just know he’s a good person all the way around. He’s not always thinking of himself. He’s always trying to find a way to give."

Manilow credits his success on stage to being a regular guy people can identify with, and having the talent to create good music. But he had to go through an evolution to want to be a good person.

In 1977, at the start of his success, he wrote in his diary, "I’m not sure I like what I’ve become." He had had a number one hit with "Mandy," but he had gone broke the same week due to excessive spending. He met Kief a year later, after subsequent big hits such as "Daybreak," "Can’t Smile Without You" and "Copacabana." Kief told him he only had $11,000 to his name because of his questionable investments. Manilow hired Kief and that was the start of his road to becoming the man he wanted to be. "Before I met Garry, I couldn’t walk around and I couldn’t meet anybody," Manilow said. "I said, ‘Not only am I not comfortable on stage, but I’m going to live a life alone, too.’ Then everything changed in 1978 with Garry and realizing what I was doing."

There was also a spiritual path the led him to wanting to be a good person. "I lived at the Bodhi Tree for a while," he said. "That was a spiritual book store (in West Hollywood). I bought every book. I read everything. I was going into another kind of thing that I had never learned about when I was younger, and it did begin to change me."

He went through some musical changes in the 1980s, playing with jazz musicians, performing show tunes and even paying tribute to big band music to stay on track as a musician, instead of being the pop entertainer he had never intended to be.

Then, in the 1990s, he literally saw a light that changed his attitude toward entertaining his audience. He was playing the Gershwin Theatre in New York, and the house lights went up over the crowd. "The lights showed me the audience," he said. "Usually I sing to the exit signs. I see shadows, but I can’t see people. But at the Gershwin, I saw them. I saw what my impact was on these people. I realized what I was doing for these people. Suddenly, I was a very grateful man that I could do this. They were smiling. They were so happy and I thought, ‘Really? I’m doing this for people?’ I thought for all those years it was ‘Me, me, me.’ And suddenly, it wasn’t about me anymore. It was about them. Everything changed. And man, I couldn’t wait to get on the stage. I knew why I was there!"

Manilow will continue his "One Last Time" tour in 2016. He wants to say good-bye to his arena fans in the United States and then Great Britain. After that he’ll perform only occasionally, without the taxing journeys from airport to airport, hotel room to hotel room.

But his energy is such that he can’t see himself ever walking away from the stage or singing a farewell song, like Sinatra’s "My Way." He has studio time booked next month to begin recording an album of half-standards and half-originals.

He’s hired a new Tony Award-winning director for the next phase of his original musical, "Harmony," and expects to hear from two producers about taking it to Broadway in the next couple weeks. His creative team has made changes to the book, which wasn’t up to par with his great orchestral music. He says, "We’re ready to go again."

Kief is encouraging him to write another book, but he hasn’t found an angle for it. "Just to write a gossipy book, that’s not good for me," Manilow said. "But, if I could find something I want to say that might be helpful, maybe I would do it."

He has a desire to teach some master classes, if someone would ask him, and maybe invest in a singer’s nightclub in Palm Springs. "There should be a place here in Palm Springs," he said. "Palm Springs is so famous. Garry and I have thought about this. He can do anything. He’s got this big (Stiletto) organization in L.A. with the boat shows (on cruise ships). He’s a genius. He’s the smartest guy I ever met."

There’s a balance in his life today that is more apparent than just two years ago, when he didn’t feel like celebrating his 70th birthday. "I’m a very happy man," he said. "Gratitude is the word that gets me through everything."

December 9, 2015 Look To The StarsBarry Manilow Performing 5 Concerts For 30 Charities
Barry Manilow is currently performing five very special concerts at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, benefiting 30 very special charities.

Manilow is giving back to Coachella Valley by giving ticket purchasers the choice of designating one of 30 charities they wish to select to benefit from their ticket purchase. Among the choices are Animal Samaritans, the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, the Desert AIDS Project, Guide Dogs of the Desert, the Manilow Music Project, Martha’s Village and Kitchen, Temple Isaiah Fund, and United Cerebral Palsy-Inland Empire.

Concert goers can also leave a "a gift of love" for Toys for Tots in the lobby of the McCallum before each concert.

The concerts started on December 8, and continue until December 13. For more info, click here.

December 9, 2015 The Desert Sun"Barry Manilow delivers holiday wishes with gift of love" by Bruce Fessier
Barry Manilow gave a sold-out crowd at the McCallum Theatre even more than a gift of love Tuesday night. He gave them an international event.

Fans of the Palm Springs resident, proudly calling themselves "Fanilows," came from all over for the first night of Manilow's five-concert charity series, called "The Gift of Love III."

Sharon Tanner of Orange County came with three friends and said, "There are people here from Japan and England and the East Coast and Northern California... We came from all over the world."

Indeed, Keiko Sakai, who was at the Gift of Love II concert in 2012, came from Tokyo and Ann Holmin came from Essex, England.

When asked why they came so far for a concert benefiting local charities, the fans were literally stumped by such a seemingly ignorant question. Then they started shouting qualities in discordant unison.

Holmin summarized by saying, "He's the whole package."

The concerts, planned by a committee chaired by Garry Kief, Terry Ketover and Kevin Bass, are expected to raise more than $500,000 for 300 different charities, including the McCallum Theatre Institute and the Manilow Music Project, which provides musical instruments for public school children. That brings the three-year total of the benefits, also held in 2009 and 2012, to more than $1.5 million.

There was an air of excitement in the lobby before the show indicating this was more special than most Manilow concerts. It was palpable as the audience waited for the curtain to open. Christmas trees were placed on both sides of the stage. Then an overture began and Manilow's voice was heard from behind the curtain, saying, "Happy holidays!"

The curtain opened and Barry was center stage in a sparkling red coat and black pants surrounded by a small forest of mini-Christmas trees, hanging wreaths, a backdrop of snow-covered mountains, more than a dozen musicians in all white and three back-up singers.

He began singing "It's A Miracle" adding the line, "I'm home again," which seemed to excite even people who didn't live in the Coachella Valley.

Manilow joked that living in the Coachella Valley was better than living in Kalamazoo and Vern Mario of Palm Desert quipped to the man next to him, "I'm from Kalamazoo!" Manilow asked the crowd, "Aren't you happy to be living here?" and Mario responded, "You aren't kidding!"

Manilow opened the show with some of his standards, including "Daybreak," "Somewhere in the Night" and "This One's For You." But he also recognized that this concert series continues through Frank Sinatra's 100th birthday on Saturday. Sinatra once said of Manilow, when he was having hit after hit in the 1970s, "He's next." So Manilow expressed his admiration of Sinatra's skills before launching into a medley of Sinatra songs, including "Strangers in the Night" and "That's Life," plus a song Manilow wrote for his 1998 tribute album to Sinatra, "Here's To the Man."

Manilow, who was nominated for a Grammy Award Monday for his most recent album, "My Dream Duets," didn't use the evening to sell albums by singing songs from that recording. Instead, it was mostly hits and holiday tunes. The "Copacabana" lyrics were changed to "Her name was Lola, she was a reindeer."

For an encore, Manilow came out in a tuxedo and sang "Deck the Halls," Feliz Navidad," "Jingle Bell Rock" and "White Christmas" with Santa and two female helpers as "snow" fell on the audience. As at the last "Gift of Love" concert, a chorus from Washington Charter School came out for the big finish of "[Because It's Christmas (For All The Children)]" before segueing back into the evening's theme, "It's A Miracle" with streamers falling on the crowd.

Manilow has been selling out arenas the past few months and what made this concert an event was the fact that this show had the pomp and ceremony of an arena show, plus the intimacy of a theater act. It was tailor-made for the Coachella Valley and that was Manilow's greatest gift of all.

He writes the songs that make the whole world sing. But if you want to see him in person, this might be your last chance. Barry Manilow is returning to Amalie Arena in Tampa on Feb. 4, the venue announced Monday. The legendary singer-songwriter and icon of smooth '70s pop is billing this latest trek of dates his "One Last Time! Tour," exclamatory emphasis his, and from all indications, he's not kidding around. "It's the last big tour," Manilow, 72, told Billboard earlier this year. "It doesn't mean I'm retiring or anything. I'll do shows and I'll promote albums if I make any more, but no more big tours. That's it. It's too much packing."

Best known for smashes like Mandy, Copacabana and Can't Smile Without You, Manilow last came to Tampa in 2011, and just as he did back then, he's keeping ticket prices down this time around. Cheap seats to his 2016 show start at just $19.75, fees included. They'll go on sale Tuesday. Click here for details about the show.

The last tour rehearsal we did was over two hours. I'm trying to get in as many of the big hits as I can. Hopefully people will remember them, but I'm going to do them anyway."

October 19, 2015 The Desert SunBarry Manilow finds desert via Edelen
Barry Manilow was fighting depression in 1983. He was having an identity crisis because he had turned into this commercial music machine and he had never intended to take that route.

He was jolted him from his funk, he says in his autobiography, “Sweet Life: Adventures on the Way to Paradise,” by recording “When October Goes” from a Johnny Mercer lyric given to him by his widow, and Barry’s Palm Springs neighbor, Ginger Mercer. It felt like a right turn.

But Barry was still living in the greatest example of mid-century modern architecture in this mid-century modern capital: the Kaufman house, designed by Richard Neutra for Pittsburgh retailer Edgar Kaufman.

It must have felt like stepping daily out of the “Mona Lisa” except Barry never had time to restore that house to its original state. So it may have felt like living in a “Mona Lisa” that had dulled over time. Imagine the pressure he must have felt to undergo the remodeling hell of all time to sustain the reputation of the Leonardo da Vinci of architecture.

But Barry's recordings after “When October Goes” also weren't charting well. He was sleeping late and catching up on his reading, but he was having trouble writing original material. It was almost like when Truman Capote came to town. A business partner said Palm Springs was the beginning of the end of Capote’s life. And now Manilow was making Palm Springs his primary residence.

Fortunately, Bill Edelen, a spiritual free thinker with a deep appreciation for the desert, had just moved to Palm Springs.

“I remember the day I finally left Los Angeles behind and moved permanently to Palm Springs,” Barry told me Sunday in an e-mail. “Looking at a house full of boxes, I said to myself, ‘What have I done?’

“The next day, I picked up the latest issue of Palm Springs Life and in the issue was the most beautiful essay on the desert written by someone named William Edelen. It was as if it was telling me that I had done the right thing by moving here. A real welcome home letter.”

“I found Bill’s phone number and said, 'Hi, Bill. This is Barry Manilow.' He said (with his customarily jovial West Texas accent), ‘Well hi!’

    “I said, ‘Who ARE you?’

“We had the greatest conversation. He told me that he held a seminar every Sunday and he thought I’d enjoy it.”

Bill often talked about the desert in his Sunday symposium in the Bougainvillea Room of The Tennis Club, on his radio show on KPSL and in his column that ran in The Desert Sun for 14 years. He framed one such column and hung it on a wall of the convalescent home in which he died on Friday, next to a framed column I had written about him.

His column said, “All great spiritual traditions began from a desert or a mountain, with the vision quest of one lone individual who, in solitude and silence, saw through the veil of the superficial into those realms and dimensions of reality that were timeless and eternal. As their vision spread, it often descended lower and lower, like rivers rushing downhill, by those who understood it not, or used it for corrupt ends. Many sensitive people today, aware of the corruption of the spiritual vision, retire to the desert or the mountaintop overlooking the desert, to seek in silence the vision, to again return their lives to the source, to the mystery that has been so corrupted by the masses. The desert, eternally, has called to such individuals."

Barry was one of those who answered the call. “My friends and I attended those Sunday seminars for years,” he said. “We learned so much. One week was on Thomas Jefferson, one was on Buddhism, one was on Buckminster Fuller. Bill was funny, spiritual, and oh so smart.”

Barry used to fly Bill all over the country to see his shows. Eventually, it leaked that he attended Bill’s symposiums. So when Lee Appel of the Palm Springs Desert Museum wanted to get him to do a benefit concert, she asked him after a symposium.

Barry thought about it, and then created one of the most special benefits ever by collaborating with Bill. Barry sat at his piano and sang songs that took on greater poignancy after Bill spoke. Bill talked about how everyone in the crowd cared so much for the desert and the museum, and Barry sang “This One’s For You.” Bill talked about the nature of love and Barry sang “Weekend in New England,” with its refrain, “When will I hold you again?” Bill and Barry read funny malaprops by kids and Barry played “I Am Your Child.” Then Barry sang songs from his tribute album to Frank Sinatra, who had recently been laid to rest in Cathedral City, and Bill talked about the desert.

It was a magnificently inspired show, but, afterwards, everyone knew Barry attended his symposiums and he had to stop attending regularly. It also increased the demand for him to do more benefits for other local charities. He finally found a creative way to help more than two dozen at a time when he did his first “Gift of Love” concert at the McCallum Theatre.

He’ll do his third “Gift of Love,” benefiting 30 local charities, Dec. 8-9 and Dec. 11-13 at the McCallum. Tickets are available at mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the box office at (760) 340-2787.

Bill’s friends hope to hold a memorial service around the same time. The winter solstice was perhaps Bill’s favorite time in the desert and his friends want to gather at a place that was sacred to him, such as Andreas Canyons.

Barry says he’ll never forget him. “He was one of my favorite friends,” he said. “A real beautiful soul. I will miss him forever.”

September 29, 2015 Boston Globe"Boston schools HQ shows off new piano — a gift from Barry Manilow" by Sarah Roberts
It’s no Copacabana, but the Boston public schools headquarters building in Dudley Square is perfectly suited for a brand new piano given as a gift by pop superstar Barry Manilow. The Yamaha P22 upright piano will serve as a centerpiece for the lobby of the newly renovated administrative offices in the Bolling Municipal Building, where the plan is to host community events and invite students to perform on the instrument.

The piano was donated by The Manilow Music Project, a foundation that provides instruments to middle and high school students across the United States and Canada. “I know firsthand how invaluable music education is,” Manilow said in a statement. “It is a privilege for me to help bring the gift of music to these kids.”

Manilow donated the piano to kick off an instrument drive he hosted for Boston public schools during his stop at the TD Garden on his One Last Time! tour earlier this year. For each city on his tour, Manilow offers a pair of free show tickets to anyone who donates a new or gently used instrument to the The Manilow Music Project. The instruments are then given to city schools.

Boston public schools also received about a half-dozen other instruments through the drive, along with the piano, according to Boston public schools spokesman Richard Weir. “It gives us opportunities at Bolling to have an ongoing display of the work that our students are doing at our school,” said Myran Parker-Brass, executive director for the arts for Boston public schools.

Parker-Brass said administrators are excited to showcase student talent to visitors and plan to invite groups to perform in the lobby every Friday in December. Plans for a holiday concert are also in the works. Aside from that, Parker-Brass said visitors will be able to sit down at the piano, or listen to others play. “It’s just nice to have that creative opportunity in the building,” Parker-Brass said.
