Thursday, January 26, 2006 Satellite Media Tour Interview on WGN TV-Chicago...
WGN: Why the 50's and how much pressure is there remaking songs that people already love?
Barry: Really, there was pressure. The scariest one of all [was] "Unchained Melody" ... Who can top the Righteous Brothers rendition of that? I did the best I could. I like it. I think that everybody is going to like this rendition of it. But you're right, it was daunting to do an Elvis song or a Johnny Mathis song or an Everly Brothers song.
WGN: Last time you were here, you were telling us that you had your eye on Broadway, producing some things. Is that also on your list of things to do?
Barry: Ohhh yeah ... I bet you you'll be hearing a lot of that within the next couple of months ... This is the hardest thing I've ever been involved with in my life, but I think we're just about there.
WGN: Barry, talk about your fans. Barry was on my radio show not too long ago. It was pouring rain and we were in the showcase window, people stood outside in a lightning storm to see you out there. And that's not untypical of the enthusiasm of your fans.
Barry: Yeah, they're fantastic. Some of them have been with me from the beginning and I can't say 'thank you' enough because I look out in the audience and I see faces that I recognize. And some of those faces were standing out in that rain. I don't even know an artist that I would do that for. It just amazes me that they're still with me.

Interview on CBS-11 Dallas / Fort Worth...
CBS-11: Now talk to us just a little bit about your latest album "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties." Why did you decide to put it together?
Barry: It's an idea that came out of the brilliant mind of the president of Arista Records, the record company that I'm with, that I've been with a million years. Clive Davis came to me and said, "I think I've got an idea that could be a hit album, 'The Greatest Songs of the Fifties.'" And I really didn't get it when he told it to me because the Fifties music kind of passed me by when I was younger. The music that I connected with was later on, was like the Beatles or something. So I went and kind of investigated the songs that came out of the 50s and they're great. I knew them all - "Rags to Riches," "All I Have To Do Is Dream," "It's All In The Game," and of course, "Unchained Melody," the Elvis song, "Are You Lonesome Tonight" ... You know, some of them, 'Sh-boom, Sh-boom, ya-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da'? That didn't sound like me. And that 'Get a job, na na na na na'? We dumped all of those. And what wound up on this album were 13 #1 records, and they sound great. I think you'll love it.
CBS-11: Of course we're going to love it! You've had over 25 Top 40 hits, you've sold over 75 million dollars in record sales, named one of the best Adult Contemporary artists, what is your favorite song?
Barry: Out of all of them? It's the very first one that I wrote, even one year before Mandy came out. It's a song called "Could It Be Magic" and it was based on a Chopin Prelude. And the record I made on my first album -- which NOBODY bought -- ran 7 minutes long! But I just thought, Oh my God, this is like a breakthrough record. Nobody bought it. But after "Mandy" came out, they went back to "Could It Be Magic" and edited it down to a proper length and it turned out to be another hit record, but that's probably my favorite one so far.

Barry Manilow Croons For ET

Barry Manilow was joined by Clive Davis during a 'private concert' and interview at the piano for ET's Vanessa Minnillo. Barry performed snippets of "Mandy," "Copacabana," "I Write The Songs," "Can't Smile Without You," and "Looks Like We Made It," in promotion of Barry's latest album, "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties." Also spotlighted was the "Ultimate Manilow" DVD (taped April 2002 at the Kodak Theatre).

With more than 40 albums, 75 million records sold and 40 number one hits, the legendary Barry Manilow now taps into a relatively untouched genre of music with his highly anticipated CD -- The Greatest Songs of the Fifties! "Being given the opportunity to co-produce, co-arrange, and sing these rarely sung golden standards is a privilege," Barry says about his new work. "I hope they affect a new generation of listeners as deeply as they did those of us who were there." The fun album, due to hit stores on January 31, includes 13 number one hits from the decade, including Elvis Presley's "Are You Lonesome Tonight," Tony Bennett's "Rags to Riches" and Frank Sinatra's "Young At Heart." "When it came to today's radio and coming up with a concept ... there was one decade that seemed to be overlooked when I looked through what songs were being recorded and it was really the great songs of the '50s," says Arista Records' Clive Davis. Barry says he was blown away with the idea, which Clive presented to him when he visited his Las Vegas show. "When he suggested this idea to me, I slapped my forehead and said, 'Why hasn't anyone thought of this idea?'" Barry says. "But of course there is only one Clive Davis. I feel honored and terribly fortunate to be working with him again after all these years. It's like coming home." And is there a tour in the works? "If this album actually hits I wouldn't be surprised if you saw me somewhere other than Vegas," Barry reveals.

CNN Showbiz Tonight
Barry Manilow and Clive Davis talk about
The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties
Barry Manilow on covering songs made famous by well-known artists: Very intimidating. Either I was very brave or very stupid to tackle these songs. My challenge was to stick to the original feeling of the songs, do it the way everyone wants to hear it, but somehow put myself into it.
Barry on working with Clive Davis: Clive comes to me with these ideas that sometimes I don't agree with but I would say 99% of the time, he's right, and he came up with this idea, this new album ... I don't even know what to say about Clive Davis; I've never met anybody with this kind of genius. It is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of talent. I've always said he's got the ears of a teenager and the mind of an executive.
Barry on performing hit songs night after night: I work all day on every song so that when I do it, it's as fresh as if I had never sung it before. You've gotta find the truth in it, and there are nights when I can't find it, and as soon as that happens I take it out of the show.
Barry on going 'off the road': 35 years of hotel rooms and late room service and late planes, and after awhile you just want your life back. I don't feel I need to prove anything anymore. I'm just having a ball. And what's really the big difference is that it's really about the audiences these days. It's not about me. I don't need anymore applause in my whole life. What really turns me on is watching these people have a good time. And I'll be there for as long as they want me to.

Interview with Barry Manilow

What prompted "The Greatest Songs of The Fifties" (according to Barry) was Clive Davis who came to him with the idea, suggesting the public may be tired of the 30's and 40's, but "no one has touched the 50's." Barry said he looked at the roster of songs that were #1 in the 50's, crawled into them and studied them, then gave it a try. Barry noted he was more influenced by the 60s. Swing was going out, Rock & Roll was going in. This stuff was in the middle.

Throughout his pop career, Barry said he really didn't look at the trend machine, didn't pay much attention to what else was going on out there, just did what felt right. Starting with "Mandy" and going to "Read 'Em And Weep," even "Weekend In New England" (a hit record that's a waltz and doesn't have the title in the song) ... he just had this small piece of the pie.

About the hurricane of success, Barry said it's kind of dangerous for new artists as nobody teaches you how to handle that; they come out with very little experience (e.g., American Idol). "People that Clive finds do have depth and craft to them. Can't say that about everything I hear on the radio, but Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson... they're the real deal."

As far as continuing to do what he does, Barry said he's a musician in his heart and as long as there's an audience out there, he'll be making music forever.

Barry took calls from a couple of fans (Robin, Liz). In response to Barry's latest album possibly charting at #1, Barry replied, "if that's true, then all I can say is if you live long enough, anything is possible! [The album] is full of nostalgia, but lots of young people are connecting with these songs. I think the album is just a beautiful album."

Barry also spoke about his current show at the Las Vegas Hilton (Manilow: Music and Passion). And how about a "Greatest Songs of the Sixties"...? Barry: "Ill follow Clive's lead."

Barry performed "Unchained Melody" from his album "The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties," and closed the show with his #1 hit from 1976, "I Write The Songs."

Monday, February 6, 2006 Martha Stewart Show (NBC) Singer/songwriter/music director Barry Manilow performs an all-time favorite -- "Copacabana" -- and, from his new album "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties," a classic -- "Unchained Melody." (This Week On Martha, 2/6/2006)

Barry performed "Unchained Melody" and "Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing" from his album "The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties," as well as his dance classic, "Copacabana (At The Copa)." Martha gave Barry a tour of her on-stage kitchen (refrigerator, freezer, coffee grinder, diswasher, oven, stove, measuring cups and spoons, a 'whisk', etc.), then prepared a bologna and cheese sandwich for Barry with fresh-baked bread.

Tuesday, February 7, 2006 Clive Davis' 30th Annual Pre-Grammy Awards Party (webcast) Clive Davis introduced Barry... "When you start a company and your first record goes to #1, you never forget it ... he's the #1 Adult Contemporary artist of all time ... headlining the Best Show in Vegas, ladies and gentlemen, welcome Barry Manilow!"

Barry opened with few lines of "Could It Be Magic," then gave the audience a little history of how it began at Bell Records, then "Clive took over Arista Records and kept me on the label" which led to their first hit record. Barry performed "Mandy," and followed that with a medley of his many hits (Can't Smile Without You / Copacabana / Even Now / Weekend In New England / Ready To Take A Chance Again / It's A Miracle / I Made It Through The Rain / Looks Like We Made It / Daybreak / I Write The Songs).

Clive made a special announcement about Barry's latest album, "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties," released last Tuesday. "What makes this moment touching is that [Barry] doesn't know this ... Tomorrow you'll all find out what I know. Barry Manilow's album of 'The Greatest Songs of the Fifties' enters the chart at #1!" The album sold 156,000 copies in its first week. "We couldn't keep it in stock, we had to re-order it!" Clive then asked Barry to perform the first cut from the album, "Unchained Melody."

Entertainment Tonight Barry Manilow responds to his Emmy nomination for the PBS Special Manilow: Music and Passion

From Stage 28, it's the new lady in Barry Manilow's life and her name is: Emmy! Barry is about to go for TV Gold and he tells us he feels like he's made it: "It's been so long since I've been nominated for anything. I don't know if my tuxedo fits anymore." For a guy who's had 38 Top 40 hits and 13 albums that have gone platinum or better, you'd think Mr. Music would have stacks of Emmys and you'd be wrong. "I won for Best Special of the Year back in... 1821!" It was really 1977 and we've been with Barry for every note ... Barry's current hit show at the Las Vegas Hilton was captured in the PBS Special "Barry Manilow: Music and Passion" now out on DVD and that's what got him his Emmy nod. "It just goes to show you, if you hang in there long enough, anything is possible! - Barry on ET

"I never get nominated for anything!" (Well, not really, Barry... The legendary singer is up for his 4th Emmy nod, this time for his PBS Vegas Special; the man who makes the whole world sing first grabbed Emmy gold 30 years ago) "Thank God I've still got my hair!" - Barry on Extra!

Barry's been making the whole world sing for three decades. He's sold over 75 million albums, performed over 3000 concerts and has 28 platinum albums and he's not done yet. 2006 has been a Big Barry Year: "This year has been extraordinary." Not only did his Greatest Songs of the Fifties album top the charts, his 2006 PBS Special has earned him an Emmy nomination. Barry's special Manilow: Music and Passion earned a total of two nominations but he was singled out for his performance. "I really didn't even think about it. I never get nominated. I got nominated back in 1821 when I started." The category Barry is nominated in has some stiff competition. The nominees in Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program includes David Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Hugh Jackman and Stephen Colbert ... "It's sort of an odd category. You would think there would be a music category, and a David Letterman kind of category" (and in response to the other nominees) "I'm such a fan and such an admirer of these guys that can do this every night and make us laugh." - Barry on E! News

The nomination for Manilow PBS Special earned Barry his first Emmy nod in quite some time. "Since 1821, yes, really it's been like 30 years ... hey, I'm on a roll, every 30 years I'll get nominated! ... I thought maybe I would kind of just go quietly into the night singing 'Mandy' to four people that are left." - Barry on Access Hollywood

Barry Manilow's Big Nomination: "I got a phone call at 6:30 in the morning, it woke me up and these people were yelling and screaming that I got this Emmy nomination for this wonderful Music and Passion show." 1977 was the year Barry won his first Emmy Award. The prime time Emmy Awards air live August 27th on NBC. Barry says he is honored to be nominated but Even Now it's not about the awards or accolades, it's about having fun. "We're just having a ball, I'll just stay there forever." - Barry on The Insider

Grammy-winning superstar BARRY MANILOW is hotter than ever! His PBS special, "Manilow: Music and Passion," was nominated for an Emmy award, and the performer plans to attend the awards show -- and sing a special song for a music industry legend. "I'm singing to DICK CLARK; that's going to be a cool moment," he says of the ailing "American Bandstand" icon, for whom he co-wrote lyrics to the "Bandstand" theme. "Yeah, it'll be emotional for me." "Manilow: Music and Passion" is available now on DVD, and coming in October is Barry's newest album, The Greatest Songs of the Sixties -- from which he gave ET's own Jann Carl a little preview with a taste of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You"!

Sunday night's Emmy Awards will certainly be a night to remember, as the legendary Dick Clark makes a highly anticipated and long-awaited return to the spotlight. For decades Clark hosted "American Bandstand," and he's infamous for hosting his New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square. But Clark was sidelined by a stroke in 2004 and silenced until his brave return last December 31. Now faithful fans will see their friend once again Sunday night when Clark takes his place on the Emmy stage, joined by none other than Barry Manilow. "Extra" spoke with Barry inside the Architectural Digest green room Friday morning. Manilow's first national TV appearance was on "American Bandstand", and he co-wrote the show's famous theme song, which he will sing Sunday night...

58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Barry Manilow to Perform "American Bandstand" Musical Tribute

Television industry icon Dick Clark will be honored as part of this year's "58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards." Musical legend and current Emmy nominee Barry Manilow, who co-wrote the lyrics with Bruce Sussman and sang the words to the catchy "American Bandstand" theme song "Bandstand Boogie," will perform a special musical tribute. Manilow and Clark's friendship spans several decades, beginning when Manilow made his first national TV appearance singing "Mandy" on "American Bandstand." Manilow went on to appear on numerous "American Bandstand" episodes as well as Clark's New Year's Eve specials and "The American Music Awards" among others.

Manilow's smash hit PBS television special "MANILOW: MUSIC AND PASSION" has earned two Emmy nominations. The special was nominated for "Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Variety or Music Special." Manilow was nominated for his first individual Emmy in the "Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program" category...

Entertainment Tonight / The Insider Barry Manilow Sings for ET

ET's Jann Carl was there when Barry shot a promotional video for his CD "The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties" (due out October 31st), including songs popularized by Frankie Valli ("Can't Take My Eyes Off You"), the Association ("Cherish / Windy"), and Barry's biggest challenge, the Righteous Brothers ("You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling"). "I'm never going to top the Righteous Brothers," says Barry, "but it's got a lot of power to it, so I like it." Barry wants his fans to know he's doing great. It's only been 8 days since he underwent double hip surgery.

The Insider Update: Barry Manilow

The 60-year-old singer is still home recuperating after having arthroscopic surgery on both of his hips. Barry told The Insider today that while he's not ready to run and and down the stage yet, he's working on getting back on his feet again soon. On Emmy night, Barry was hanging in The Insider Photo Booth just hours before undergoing surgery and was looking forward to being pain free: "It's a 6-week recuperation and I'll be back better than ever." Manilow is set to return to the Las Vegas Hilton on November 8 where he will be promoting his new album, "The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties" and singing his old favorites from his DVD "Music and Passion." Access Hollywood Barry's Back...

Only weeks after surgery, Barry is working hard to feel better and get back on stage: "I'm not ready for 'Dancin' With The Stars' but I would say I'm about 65% better ... Actually I'm recovering very, very quickly. Four weeks post-op? I should be on my back. I'm not. I'm practicing 'Copacabana' right now." In response to going into surgery: "I brought my Emmy into the operating room as a good luck charm. It's a heavy thing! I stuck it on my chest; I said 'okay, let's go'." On being ready to perform again: "My mind thinks I am; my body doesn't like it. Even during rehearsals, I say 'Stop, I have to go ice my hips,' and I sit for about 20 minutes with my ice packs on, then I can go back." On beginning his recovery in an electric wheel chair: "Before the surgery I practiced. And now I have to re-paint the entire house. Because I bumped into every single wall. I backed up over the dog... twice. There was a long line on every wall until I learned how to use this thing!"

Entertainment Tonight Barry Manilow's Triumphant Return to Performing!

The legendary singer was sidelined by hip surgery and tonight for the first time he tells ET why he's still fighting the pain. Bouncing, dancing, giving it his all just four weeks after surgery. Back to 100%? "Well I'm 75(%) but I'll be there," says Barry. The 60-year-old music legend had been in excrutiating pain but postponed hip surgery last month so that he could take part in a tribute to his good friend Dick Clark at the Emmy's. Manilow himself took home a statuette that night for his PBS Special, then checked into the hospital (in a wheelchair with his Emmy). "All the nurses laughed. They laid me out on a gurney, I put the [Emmy] on my chest. The next thing I knew it was all over." Originally Barry was scheduled for hip replacement but ended up having arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage of both hips. "I found another doctor in the sports world that said 'no, you don't need that'. I would've gone for that hip replacement because that's how much pain I was in." The less evasive procedure plus physical therapy twice a day put Barry back on stage and feeling better than ever. "I can get through it. I need to sit down a lot. I don't need to stop the show, but I can't do what I used to love to do, which was to run from one side of the stage to the other. But give me a couple of months." Barry's new CD, The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties, arrives in stores October 31st. Next Saturday, the consummate showman hits the stage in Atlantic City, and he's back at the Las Vegas Hilton beginning November 8th.

The Insider Insider Exclusive with Barry Manilow

The Insider's Victoria Recano was invited to Barry's first post-op concert in Atlantic City, just six weeks after his hip surgery. Barry: "I would say I'm about 80 to 85% back, so I'll get through the show." Manilow acknowledged that prior to surgery, "It got to the point at the end of the Hilton run where I had to come out one night and stop. I came out in my jeans and I said 'I can't do this'. I could not get through that show." Manilow feared he might be facing two major hip replacement surgeries: "Every orthopedic surgeon I saw tried to get me to do that, until I fumbled my way into the sports world, and in the sports world, these cartilage tears that I had are very common. The guy that I went to, Dr. Dorr said 'No, you don't need hip replacement at all.'" In August, just hours after winning an Emmy [for the PBS Special "Manilow: Music and Passion"], Barry underwent surgery to repair the torn cartilage. "I took [the Emmy] into the operating room, and it was the next morning, at 5:30 in the morning, I still had it in my hand ... It was my lucky charm." In response to recovering at his Palm Springs home: "I have to repaint the whole house because I bumped into every wall, and there's lines on every wall. I backed up over the dog twice." On stage at the opening in Atlantic City, with backup singers dressed as nurses, Barry rises from a wheelchair, "I'm six weeks post-op and I'm standing up. It's a Miracle!" Barry's new CD, "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties," hits stores October 31st. He returns to the Las Vegas Hilton for his Emmy Award-winning concert, "Manilow: Music and Passion," on November 8th. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Barry performed "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" from his latest CD, "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties"

On winning the recent Emmy Award for the PBS Special "Manilow: Music and Passion", Barry replied, "I was [genuinely surprised] ... All these guys [like Jay] who do a different show every night and kill themselves. Not that [our show] isn't great, but it was a weird category. I was the only singer there, the only music show, so I thought one of these guys would definitely get it. I was thrilled. I never thought I would get it ... I was with Dick [Clark], who was very moved, and they announced my name and my manager had to say, 'Get out there!'" On preparing an acceptance speech: "I had one, a dummy speech ... but they give you like 30 seconds, and I knew if some miracle happened and that I actually won, I had to have these names that I wanted to say, in my pocket. I only had eight names, and I got to #6 and they played the music. I don't know how people do this. They started playing the music on the 6th name and I started to rush." On having surgery the next day: "I took my Emmy and I laid down on that gurney. I stuck the Emmy on my chest and I said 'Let's go!' I woke up and the Emmy was in the corner and I was done." On returning to stage: "I'm six weeks post-op and I did a concert last weekend. I kind of made it through. I'm about 85% back ... Give me a couple of months and I'll be back. I'm a lucky guy."

December 2006 England/London Barry Returns to London!

In the US, lightning strikes twice in 2006 for Arista/SONYBMG recording artist Barry Manilow, as massive online fan club and advance orders, coupled with six figure sales at retail, plus an unprecedented television blitz, add up to the biggest sales week of Manilow's highly successful career, with a #2 Nielsen SoundScan debut with 201,904 copies sold, a 30% sales increase over his Fifties album released just 9 months ago. The new album will be released in the UK on November 27th with two exclusive bonus tracks, "Yesterday" and "California Dreamin'."

Each song on The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties is a classic in its own right - from his remake of the Righteous Brothers "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" (1965) to the Beatles' "And I Love Her"(1964), to Herb Alpert's "This Guy's In Love With You" (1968), the Lettermen's "When I Fall In Love" (1962) and Burt Bacharach's "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" (1969). Like the marvelous musical decade of the '60s itself, the album covers many genres, from its recollection of Herman's Hermits' "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over The World)"(1967), to Bobby Vinton's "Blue Velvet" (1963), to Jackie DeShannon's "What The World Needs Now Is Love" (1965).

The follow up to the RIAA platinum The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties, the first album in Barry Manilow's career to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart upon its release earlier this year, makes Manilow the only artist of 2006, in the US, to have two albums debut in the top 2 chart positions in the same calendar year.

Manilow will be returning to the UK early December for various MAJOR TV and radio performances (Already on the schedule: The X Factor, The Royal Variety Show, Michael Parkinson, Jonathan Ross), plus an EXCLUSIVE in-store performance in London.

Manilow, who releases his new Clive Davis produced album, The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties on November 27th through SONYBMG, will replicate the success of his first song book album, The Greatest Songs Of The Fifties, performing tracks from the eras best loved artists including Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Frankie Valli.
