The Ellen DeGeneres Show "Welcome to the Ellen DeGeneres Show...
the hottest spot north of Havana"

In promotion of Barry's forthcoming show engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton (beginning February 23), Barry performed "Could It Be Magic" (ballad + uptempo) and "Sweet Heaven (I'm In Love Again)" (updated arrangement and dedicated to Ellen, "...I'll shout it everywhere I go, I'll sing it on the Ellen Show..."). Ellen asked Barry about the Las Vegas appearances ("five shows a week with chunks of time off"), contract rumors, tennis, commercial jingles that Barry isn't as proud of, and the Conventions with Fanilows (sometimes there are a "lot of Lolas with feathers in their hair!").

The Tony Danza Show Paula Abdul, Chef Mario Batali, and Barry Manilow

Tony's special Celebrity Extravadanza guest is
Barry Manilow (on the phone)

Tony mentions Barry will be debuting his show in Vegas (February 23, Las Vegas Hilton). Tony asks Barry what he claims to be an expert in; Barry responds, "the category of music ... my favorite musician (for the last 20 years) has been Sting." So the Question (worth a $1,500 Disney Gift Card to caller Teresa and $10,000 to the Starlight Starbright Foundation, if Barry gets the answer right) is: On which of Sting's albums did the double platinum hit song "Fields Of Gold" first appear? Barry's answer: That's easy - Ten Summoner's Tales. (Correct!)

The Insider Interview with Barry Manilow

The Insider asked Barry what the lowest point in his career was ("When I went bankrupt, AFTER selling 50 million records, after the big tours, the hits ... I'll never let that happen again - I still didn't feel like it was the end of the world - How bad can it be? I'll just start again, and I did"); and about being hospitalized for chest pains due to atrial fibrillation ("I said, 'Have I done everything I want to do? Have I said everything I want to say? Have I thanked everybody I want to thank?' All those questions were going through my head"). Then Barry took The Insider's correspondent Victoria Recao on a Royal Tour of his "3-story palace" at the Las Vegas Hilton, home of Barry's current "Manilow: Music and Passion" show ("I just do the work and I like what I do ... you just gotta believe in what you do.")

Society of Singers presents
14th Annual ELLA AWARD

Eric McCormack, Joss Stone, k.d. lang, LeAnn Rimes, Lulu, Ruth Brown and Smokey Robinson will be among the performers at the Society of Singers' (SOS) presentation of the 14th annual ELLA Award to Elton John at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on October 10, 2005. Tickets are priced at $600, $900, $1,250 and $2,500, with all proceeds to benefit the non-profit Society of Singers. Barry Manilow, the recipient of the 12th annual Ella Award in 2003, will present the award and perform, as will Elton John himself. All the performers will choose songs originally made famous by John. Elizabeth Taylor and Merck Mercuriadis, president of Sanctuary Management, are the event's Honorary Co-Chairs, while the Benefit Co-Chairs are John's songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin; Zach Horowitz, president and COO of the Universal Music Group; and Society of Singers president and CEO Jerry F. Sharell. Named after its first recipient, Ella Fitzgerald, the ELLA Award is given to singers whose significant musical accomplishments are equaled by their dedication to charitable and humanitarian causes both local and international. Previous recipients of the award, besides Ms. Fitzgerald herself, include Frank Sinatra, Tony Martin, Peggy Lee, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Lena Horne, Rosemary Clooney, Joe Williams, Tony Bennett, Dame Julie Andrews, Placido Domingo, Barry Manilow, and Celine Dion.

The Insider Inside with Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow writes the songs that make the whole world sing, and he's currently belting them out each night in his popular Sin City show, "Music and Passion," at the Las Vegas Hilton. "I couldn't handle the road anymore. It was 30 years of hotel rooms," the veteran showman tells our Kathie Lee Gifford about his decision to take on the Vegas gig. "Musically, I'm raring to go. Performing, I'm raring to go. But it was the touring that was getting to me."

Barry's musical career began in Brooklyn at the age of seven, where he learned to play on a neighbor's piano. Soon he was off to the New York College of Music and Juilliard in Manhattan. In New York, he met the young and outrageously talented Bette Midler, who asked him to be her pianist and work on her Grammy-winning album, The Divine Miss M.

He and his longtime friend reunited in 2003 to collaborate on Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook and teamed up again a few months back on a similar tribute album honoring Peggy Lee.

But as Barry himself admits, "it's been ups and downs," and no doubt one of those downs was when his health suddenly became an issue last year. He fell ill at his Palm Springs, CA, residence and was rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with an atrial fibrillation and sent home. "I had this heart thing," Barry explains. "Not fun. It feels like you have a fish jumping around in your chest." Fortunately, he recently underwent an operation that corrected the problem and is "done with that craziness," he assures Kathie Lee. "I'm fine. I'm in great shape."

Feeling fit, Barry is not only busy working the crowds in Vegas, but is currently recording an album of timeless tunes from the 1950s like "Young at Heart, "Rags to Riches" and "Venus." As far as today's music is concerned, Barry admits to being impressed by fellow piano player Alicia Keys. "She is great. She deserves everything that she gets. She is a wonderful musician, as beautiful as they come and a great singer."

The Insider Barry Hits 100!

Singer and songwriter BARRY MANILOW still has the "hottest show north of Havana," and tonight he proves it as he celebrates his 100th Vegas performance with a party supplied by our own VICTORIA RECAO. "Champagne and cake?! Cancel the second show!" Barry exclaimed. "I feel like a bridegroom or something. It's just the happiest I've ever been. It doesn't feel like it could possibly be 100 performances. We've been having such a great time."

Yes, the award-winning singer of "Mandy" and "Copacabana" has been playing onstage five shows a week at the Las Vegas Hilton since February and he's signed to do many more shows. "The whole thing is a big surprise," Barry says, "that I'm still here and that there is an audience that is still out there and interested in what I'm doing. It's got to be deeper than a pretty melody or a nice lyric. There's something much deeper with me and those folks out there. Over the years, it's become more than song. It's become memories of people and children."

Barry has joined the ranks of singers like ELTON JOHN, CHER and his former partner-in-song, BETTE MIDLER. So would he ever reunite with Bette? "I heard a rumor that Bette and Cher were thinking of coming here," he says. "Wouldn't that be great? We could all come and sing at each others shows."

Excitement was especially high for Barry this week because the TV crews from PBS were in Vegas shooting "Barry Manilow: Music and Passion," for a TV special to air in March. "By the end of the show, everyone was on their feet," he says of the taping.

And there's always a chance of another appearance on the "The Oprah Winfrey Show," where he is reportedly the most requested star guest by viewers. "She's brilliant," Barry says of the Emmy-winning host. "What you see is real. The few times I've been with her she doesn't turn into another person when she walks on camera. She's been thru the mill and come out the other end a really good person." For more fun with Barry, watch tonight's "Insider."
