  • 'Manilow, not cool? That's not what I hear' - Tony Iannelli - Wait, are you not cool if you admit that you went to the Barry Manilow concert at PPL Center? Does that make you a not-so-hip old guy? I mean, I did go to the Nickelback concert. Doesn’t that count for some coolness points? OK, I admit I went to see Manilow, and it was packed and he was great. Seeing Manilow at the incredible PPL Center reminded me of the very first time I saw him. He performed at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia in the ’70s. That’s right, I said the ’70s. Remember, we used to have to travel to Philly to see any acclaimed act. Actually, to see almost any act, period. Those days are over, baby. You can see almost anyone you’ve dreamed of right here in the Lehigh Valley ... Back to Manilow. He has a song that goes: “I made it through the rain and found myself respected by the others who got rained on too and made it through.” This formerly gritty industrial valley took some tough hits as it weathered the storm. It seemed like forever and it took tenacity, but ... we made it through the rain. I’m not saying we don't have more work to do. I am saying that the revitalization and creation of incredible retail outlets, restaurants and entertainment venues have given us fewer reasons for those trips to Philly. So here’s to the mayors, the many council people, the developers, the entrepreneurs, the home restorers, the new arrivals and the lifelong residents like me. To all of you crusaders who never, ever gave up -- no matter how bad things looked -- thanks for staying true. As the man said, “The miracle is you.” (The Morning Call, 10/17/2017)

  • Joy Behar Celebrates Birthday On 'The View' With Barry Manilow - Joy Behar celebrated her birthday on “The View” on Friday. The longtime co-host, who will turn 74 on Saturday, was feted by Barry Manilow, Taraji P. Henson and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. The special episode of the ABC talk show began with Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Paula Faris walking out to Katy Perry’s “Birthday.” Italian treats, including dozens of cannolis, were laid out on the table, leading her to crack, “Just what I wanted: I’m going to put seven pounds on my ass” ... Manilow was there to serenade her, nearly 20 years after she professed her love for him on the show. In her honor, he played an unrehearsed medley of “Looks Like We Made It,” “Mandy,” “I Write The Songs” and “Copacabana.” The music icon also brought Behar memorabilia, and closed his mini-set with “Can’t Smile Without You.” And though it was Behar’s birthday, she decided to give out a gift of her own. She explained, “I wanted to give something back this year,” and so she chose to highlight The Retreat, an organization for victims of domestic violence. Some of the group’s employees and beneficiaries were in attendance, and Behar enlisted Toyota to give a donation of $30,000 as well as a new van to transport those in need of assistance. • In 'Clive Davis,' the Evolution of a Music Mogul - Chris Perkel’s reverent documentary “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives” is a valedictory for Mr. Davis, the music executive whose Midas touch with radio hits across genres -- especially at Arista Records, from 1975-2000 -- is industry legend. The career of Mr. Davis, now 85, covering the 1960s to the present, is remarkable when you consider his longevity and resilience given pop music’s core audience of young listeners. Entertainment luminaries -- Aretha Franklin, Puff Daddy, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Alicia Keys and many others -- attest to his golden ear and marketplace savvy ... Later discoveries included Barry Manilow, whose debut album, Mr. Davis felt, needed a hit; he recommended the song that became "Mandy," which exploded on radio... (New York Times, 9/26/2017)

  • Clive Davis Documentary 'The Soundtrack of Our Lives' Premieres on Apple Music Oct. 3 - The documentary “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival back in April, will debut exclusively on Apple Music on October 3, with a limited theatrical release in select cities starting on September 27. The film, which was directed by Chris Perkel, examines Davis’ life and career in great detail. Davis, now 85, began his career as an attorney and was hired by Columbia Records, a client of the firm for which he worked, in 1960. He rose through the ranks and was appointed president of the label in 1967, and shortly afterward experienced an epiphany at the Monterey Pop Festival (the 50th anniversary of which is coming up in June), coming away with not just a vision of the burgeoning rock revolution, but also a contract for Janis Joplin. In the half century since then -- at Columbia, the two labels he founded, Arista and J, and his current role as chief creative officer for Sony Music -- he’s directed or had a strong hand in the careers of Sly and the Family Stone, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, Aerosmith, Alicia Keys, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, The Kinks, Lou Reed, Dionne Warwick, Carly Simon, and many others; via deals with L.A. Reid and Babyface’s LaFace Records and Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy, he’s also been connected with Outkast, TLC, Usher, Pink, and The Notorious B.I.G. It’s all explored in great detail in the film - check out a trailer below. (Yahoo! Entertainment, 9/18/2017)

  • Melissa Manchester Brings Her Favorite Fellas to Birdland - Birdland, the venue that has presented so many music luminaries in it’s long history had the Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester on it’s stage last night. Melissa, one of the true giants of the music world made her Birdland debut and celebrated the release of her 21st album, “The Fellas.” The album pays tribute to the male singers, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Mel Torme, and others who influenced her as a young artist ... Melissa, born in The Bronx and discovered by Barry Manilow while she was playing in NYC clubs, was introduced by him to Bette Midler in 1971. She became a member of Bette’s back up singers the Harlettes and the rest is history. Home is LA but Melissa came back to her roots last night and the audience at Jim Caruso’s Broadway at Birdland series was thrilled beyond words (and music) hearing so many great tunes sung by a great artist. The line of folks without reservations on 44th street couldn’t be stopped from Crying Out Loud for this one night only show. (Times Square Chronicles, 9/12/2017)

  • Maine West Singers Get Chance On Stage With Manilow - Music legend Barry Manilow had some very special guests at his Saturday concert: members of the Maine West High School Choraliers. “It’s very exciting,” said Maine West Choral Director Jim Schiffer. “Even though they might not know all of Barry Manilow’s songs, I think they definitely appreciate what an icon he is for their parents’ generation and just in general in pop music and pop culture.”

Originally scheduled for May 17, the concert and Choraliers performance was postponed after Manilow suffered from strained vocal chords. But, he rescheduled his concert for July 29, keeping the Choraliers in tow.

Since the cancellation and subsequent rescheduling, the students held four additional rehearsals in preparation of the show. Three took place over summer vacation, at times making perfect attendance impossible. “It has been tough, but we’ve made it work,” said Schiffer. “A lot of students, of course, were already scheduled for vacation, summer camps... I had to be flexible.”

Before the concert, Schiffer was most looking forward to his students getting a behind-the-scenes peek at the show, from lighting to sound check. “I’m really most looking forward to the students getting that experience of seeing how a professional touring show works,” he said Friday. “Being able to see that from the backstage point of view is a really unique experience.”

Choralier students sang during the show’s finale and encore. The Choraliers is an extracurricular, a capella group at Maine West in Des Plaines. Students audition for the group, which focuses on pop music. (Journal Online, 7/31/2017)

Manilow took time out to visit Hurstville while performing three shows at the Sydney Entertainment Centre during his Greatest Hits Tour of Australia. • Melissa Manchester to Release "The Fellas" on September 8 - Melissa Manchester will release her 21st studio album, The Fellas, on September 8 via her own Long Run Entertainment. Funded by a recent Indiegogo campaign, the album is the culmination of a multi-decade goal for the singer. "In 1989, I released my Tribute album to honor the great women singers who meant so much to me as a young artist – singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Rosie Clooney, Judy Garland, Sarah Vaughan, Eydie Gormé ... that rarified bunch. Ever since, I've wanted to complete the idea with another album paying homage to the great male singers who, likewise, set the platinum standard for the rest of us – Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Mel Tormé, Johnny Mathis, Dean Martin ... the greats."

For The Fellas, Manchester is once again working at Citrus College in Glendora, CA where she recorded her last album, You Gotta Love the Life, in their state-of-the art production facilities. This time, she is co-producing with Robert Slack, Dean of the Visual and Performing Arts school and working with The Citrus College Blue Note Orchestra.

Manchester said "It seems fitting that I help pass the torch to these dedicated young musicians as I'm paying tribute to the artists who inspired me. Some would think it's risky to entrust a recording project to a group of students. What I found was that, under the expert tutelage of Bob Slack and Alan Waddington (and the rest of the Citrus faculty), these young musicians rose to, and exceeded, our expectations, every time, every song. This is a community college, open to all who want to learn, and these students truly appreciate the opportunity to be part of a grand musical adventure." Also joining Melissa is her long-time friend Barry Manilow with the pair dueting on "For Me and My Gal."

The track list (with the artist to which the song is dedicated):

    • Ain’t That A Kick In The Head (Dean Martin)
    • Chances Are (Johnny Mathis)
    • They Say It’s Wonderful (Johnny Hartman)
    • For Me And My Gal (feat. Barry Manilow) (Gene Kelly (and Judy Garland))
    • Love Is Just Around The Corner (Mel Tormé)
    • Smile (Nat King Cole)
    • Night And Day (Frank Sinatra)
    • How Do You Keep The Music Playing (Tony Bennett)

Much will be going on during the Saturday event at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, all designed to promote kindness, understanding, and fun while raising money for Leeza’s Care Connection.

Gibbons created The Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation in 2002 as a promise to her mother to “tell her story and make it count” after her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Leeza’s Care Connection, the signature program of The Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation, is a place for caregivers to go for support, to ask questions, find resources and connect with other caregivers. When it came time to raise money, Gibbons wanted to do something that also positively impacted the community, and she knew that offering some “celebrity sizzle” would add interest.

Gibbons wants the event to feel like friends are gathered for dinner and a game of charades. She will be there, along with local celebrities including Dawn Staley, Frank Martin, Ray Tanner, Joe Pinner, Tony Clyburn and Mary King. Several television stars will join Manilow and Somers via video, including Gary Sinise, Maria Shriver, Marie Osmond, Mario Lopez, Geraldo Rivera, Sharon Osbourne, Nancy O’Dell and Craig Melvin. These celebrities will be “daring” audience members to do certain feats to show they care. The dares will range from the fun and silly, such as Lopez challenging folks to don boxing gloves, to the serious, such as Sinise challenging folks to stand up and show support and respect for veterans and Shriver charging everyone to work toward creating a world without Alzheimer's.

If you go... Fundraiser for Leeza’s Care Connection. Date: Saturday. Time: Fun Fair and Health and Wellness Expo, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; Dinner and Take the Dare Live Auction, 5-8 p.m. Where: Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln Street. Cost: Fair and Expo free; Dinner and Take the Dare Auction $60 in advance, $70 at the event. Includes dinner, drink and auction. Details: www.LeezaGibbonsDare2Care.com (The State, 6/21/2017)

  • Seniors Say Goodbye - Almost 200 members of the Mount Anthony Union High School senior class stood together for the last time as high school students on Friday. The school's 51st commencement ceremony took place on the school's Spinelli Field. The ceremony was accompanied by the sound of the MAUHS band, under the direction of Marjorie Rooen, and the MAUHS choir, under the direction of Lynn Sweet ... When the graduates entered, the band played the traditional "Pomp and Circumstance," by Edward Elgar. The processional was led by Principal Glenda Cresto and Superintendent Jim Culkeen. Cresto gave the opening remarks. "On this field tonight are some pretty remarkable people," she said, "They are all scholars. Many are artists, actors, singers, and musicians. Some are athletes, and many of our athletes are heading the championship games next week."

Andre Wright, the president of the class, spoke next. "Nobody knows what the future holds for sure, because it's our job to innovate it" ... The first faculty speaker was Judi Estes, who took the students on a verbal journey that began in 2004 ... "Today, they are sitting near [their] friends, many from that first day of kindergarten back in 2004," she said, "May they live happily ever after. Don't let yourself stagnate," she implored the students, "Always try to improve your physical and emotional being, otherwise you'll fall behind. Focus on what's important to you."

The second member of the faculty to give a speech was Amy Thivierge. "I stand before you humbled by the idea that you think I have ideas worth listening to," she told her colleagues, before addressing the graduates, telling various people throughout history who had the opportunity to change the world by being one of the few who was willing to speak up. "One voice, their voice, speaking up, gave others the courage to follow," she said, "One voice began, others joined in, and the world changed. I challenge you today to use your voice," she said, "I ask you to believe that using your voice to speak up for what is right and true is worth it."

After a musical interlude featuring Thivierge and the entire graduating class singing Barry Manilow's "One Voice," with more and more voices gradually joining in, the class salutatorian, Erika McCarthy, gave her speech. "The people here today, in the audience, have played a huge role in shaping us, and we can never forget that," she said, "As we all go out into the world, it's important to realize we'll be affecting a whole lot more people." • Dual Yamaha PM10s for Manilow Tour - Barry Manilow is back on the road in support of his new record “This Is My Town: Songs of New York." Engineer Will Miller has chosen a Yamaha RIVAGE PM10 Digital Audio Console for mixing Manilow’s monitors. Cameron Manes is using a second PM10 for the band’s monitor mix. Hi-Tech Audio (Hayward, CA) provided the dual PM10s to Delicate Productions (Camarillo, CA) who is handling production for the tour. A long-time Yamaha digital console user, Will Miller has been mixing Manilow’s monitors for five years ... Miller says he has a sense of the sound Manilow prefers. “It's not an obvious mix, but once you know what works, you keep at it. My main concern with switching consoles was always going to be making the transition seamless for him. I don't want Barry to give up any of his time in rehearsal to work on his monitor sound. Obviously, sticking with Yamaha was a given; not that I have any desire to stray anyway, but it was paramount that the new PM10 console be able to replicate the sound Barry was used to ... By far the most reassuring parts of the PM10 were all the 'Legacy' EQs, compressors, and effects. I know at some point I will really delve into all the cool options that are built into each channel and the system, but for the time being, it was very important to copy EQ curves and reverb settings that work for Barry’s sound, and having the ability to precisely replicate what I was doing on the PM1D was incredibly reassuring...” (Live Design, 5/30/2017)

  • Show Will Go On For Maine West, Manilow, In July - Though a local Barry Manilow concert on Wednesday, May 17 was cancelled, Des Plaines’ Maine West High School Choraliers Club will still get to perform with the prolific singer-songwriter on July 29. According to Maine Township High School District 207 Director of Communications Dave Beery, the 20-member group was scheduled to perform with Manilow on Wednesday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont. However, the singer cancelled his performance due to strained vocal chords. Beery said that the concert has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 29. All of the Choraliers, including graduated seniors, are invited to perform with Manilow at the show. "I received word about the rescheduled date yesterday morning with an invitation to still sing. I am very excited to announce that I just received word this morning from our fantastic school administration that all students originally scheduled to perform will get to," said Maine West Choral Director Jim Schiffer. In preparation for the show, the students practiced for more than 10 hours. (Journal Online, 5/15/2017)

  • Maine West singers to perform with Barry Manilow - Barry Manilow, the 73-year-old pop crooner and decorated artist, will get some help from a few Maine West High School singers at a concert next week. Manilow Productions called up the high school's choral director Jim Schiffer and asked whether students would join the singer for a concert Wednesday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont. This week, Schiffer told the 20 members of the school's a cappella group "Choraliers" that they'll be joining Manilow for the concert's finale. The students will practice and rehearse about 10 hours in preparation for the concert. Which song has the singer of hits like "Mandy," "Can't Smile Without You," and "Copacabana" picked for his finale? That's under wraps until show time. (Daily Herald, 5/11/2017)

  • DMS to perform with Barry Manilow - World-renowned entertainer Barry Manilow brings his stage show to Choctaw’s Grand Theater tonight. His agents made a surprise call to Durant Middle School this week to invite the Durant Middle School Choir to sing, dance and be his special guests at his show. They had in mind to use Durant High School Choir but cooperation and a sense of fairness between directors has DMS performing. Aprill Raines, Director of DMS Choir said, “They talked about us and the high school doing this together, but we decided that the high school kids performed at Foreigner, so we’d perform with Barry.”

Raines didn’t even have a full week to get her students ready for the performance, but she has confidence in her students. Raines said, “They called me Monday and we are singing 3 songs. I have a small select ensemble at the Middle School that has auditioned as a show choir. They are called “Appawse” like applause but we use it because of the Lion paws. We came up with this cute little name.” Raines said her group stays busy performing and she’s glad they can do the show with Manilow.

Raines said, “We perform out in the community all the time. We did Three Valley Museum’s open house at Christmas. We caroled downtown. We did Santa on the Square event. We performed for the Teacher’s Education Sorority in town. We just performed at Branson on the Branson Belle. They did a broadway review there. Then I get this call Monday to do the Barry Manilow finale during his concert.”

They have a choreographer they sent to rehearse with the students. Raines said, “They will have a rehearsal, then a staging rehearsal. Then we perform the concert with our 26 students, 7th and 8th graders.” They will be at the venue 4 hours early in preparation for the performance. According to Raines, they will perform "I Write the Songs", "Copacabana", and they finish with "It’s a Miracle." Every performance is special, but this performance should be a memory the students will cherish a lifetime. (Durant Daily Democrat, 5/11/2017)

  • Barry Manilow Scores 26th Top 40 Album With 'This Is My Town' - On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated May 13), Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. spent a second straight week atop the list. Elsewhere in the top 10, Incubus’ 8 arrived at No. 4, while the Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 soundtrack beamed in at No. 8. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart:

Barry Manilow, This Is My Town: Songs of New York – No. 12 - Barry Manilow achieves his 26th top 40-charting album on the Billboard 200, as This Is My Town: Songs of New York arrives at No. 12 with 29,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 27. Nearly all of that sum was driven by traditional album sales. A significant number of the album’s sales were via QVC, which hosted the singer in a special on April 12. The QVC edition of the album came with four live bonus tracks.

Manilow has been on a Billboard 200 hot streak since 2002, when his greatest-hits collection Ultimate Manilow debuted and peaked at No. 3 (Feb. 23, 2002), becoming his highest-charting set (and first top 10) since 1979’s One Voice (No. 9). Since 2002, Manilow has logged a dozen top 40 efforts (including Ultimate). Further, he has notched at least one top 40 album in each decade from the 1970s through the 2010s. (Billboard, 5/4/2017)

  • What You Missed at the Concert for America Starring Barry Manilow - Seth Rudetsky shares highlights from the April Concert for America with Barry Manilow, Chita Rivera... We flew back from London on Sunday, I rehearsed my amazing back-up singers on Monday, and we tech’d the show on Tuesday. It went so great! It all began when I emailed Barry Manilow a few months and asked him to do our first Concert For America on Inauguration Day. He wasn’t going to be in NYC, but he wrote back and told us that he would be here the week of April 17 for Clive Davis’ Radio City Music Hall bash and he would do it that week if we wanted. YES we wanted! We didn’t know what he’d be willing to do... one song and then peace out? Well, turns out, he did so much more than we expected!

At the beginning of the show, James and I came out and told everyone that Concert For America is a monthly concert raising money for NAACP, Southern Poverty Law Center, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Sierra Club Foundation and the National Immigration Law Center. Then I told everyone that the main purpose of the concert (besides raising funds and awareness) is to cheer people up. “And what’s more joyous than this opening vamp?” And I played the beginning of “Daybreak”! The crowd went crazy. And then I added, “And who more perfect to sing it than the man who wrote it? Mr. Barry Manilow!” He came out and sang it in the original key (he’s 73!)!

We talked about his return to NYC and how much he loves it and he launched into the title track from his new CD “This Is My Town.” I had him on my SiriusXM radio show the next day and we talked about how during rehearsal he initially didn’t want to do the song in our concert. James and I actually had to talk him into it. Why? Well, he said he was nervous to perform that tune because it was “preceded by six words that strike fear into the audience: Here’s one of my new songs.” So hilarious and so true! Barry told us that he knows people come to concerts to hear the hits and people will literally stream out of the audience whenever artists try to do a new song. But this one was so perfect that James and I knew he had to do it.

Barry made his second appearance halfway through the concert and sang one of his hits... then another... then another! It was literally 9 minutes of hit songs! I’m talking “Weekend In New England,” “Even Now,” “Ready To Take A Chance Again,” “One Voice,” “It’s A Miracle,” “I Write The Songs,” and MORE! He began with “Mandy,” which he said was his first hit “released way back in 1821.” When I was chatting with him on SiriusXM the next day he talked about how much he learned about songwriting when he was doing jingles in the ’70s (such as “You deserve a break today...”). Some of those jingles are still being used today, but he doesn’t make any money on them! Turns out, jingle composers made a one-time fee per tune…in the 1970s—around $500. But the singer gets residuals every time it’s used, so any jingle of his played with the original recording still doles out money to the original singer. He jokes that the woman who sang “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there...” is on her third Mercedes.

I asked him about becoming famous in the ’70s and if he ever got to do American Bandstand. He said he was so excited to do it in the classic American Bandstand studio but instead, they filmed it on a beach! I, of course, asked if he wore a skimpy bathing suit and he said no because he has “pelican legs.”

Another highlight of the Concert was when Richard Cohen, the president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, announced a lawsuit they had just filed against a major neo-Nazi organization ... Richard has worked on this kind of lawsuit before and bankrupted major leaders of hate groups, which prevents their power from spreading. Right after he spoke we applauded his group for standing up for American values and freedom and Barry walked onstage and simply started “Let Freedom Ring.” So moving and inspiring! • Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Aretha Franklin [was] on hand at Radio City Music Hall to honor the music mogul at the world premiere of the new documentary “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives,” which opened this year’s Tribeca Film Festival ... Rocking a white dress and gamely shimmying across the stage, she dished out solid if unspectacular versions of “You Make me Feel Like a (Natural Woman)” and “Freeway of Love,” and saluted Davis’ influence on the music world ... The night’s bill of artists featured a string of Davis’ many finds and signings. First up was Barry Manilow, who opened the show with a medley of hits including “Copacabana,” “Mandy,” and “Can’t Smile Without You.” Earth, Wind and Fire also ran through some R&B classics, including “The Way You Move” (assisted by easy-listening legend Kenny G), while Dionne Warwick added some soft soul with “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” and “That’s What Friends are For.” Davis’ most famous discovery, Whitney Houston, was also acknowledged by way of a medley sung by Jennifer Hudson... • Documentary delves into life of music pioneer Clive Davis - Clive Davis celebrated his legacy with the debut of a documentary about his life, along with performances from artists he helped become icons, during the opening night of the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. Davis, 85, said it was a dream come true to launch "Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives" at Radio City Music Hall since he grew up in Brooklyn and didn't visit Manhattan until he was 13.

The music mogul was all smiles at the multi-hour event Wednesday night, as performers like Aretha Franklin, Carly Simon, Barry Manilow and Earth, Wind & Fire took the stage to pay tribute to Davis. Jennifer Hudson left the stage to walk into the aisles to dance with the crowd as she sang Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." When Franklin - who closed the show - sang "Natural Woman," she pointed to Davis and sang the lyrics, "He makes me feel." She also called her longtime collaborator a "chieftain" and "humanitarian."

Others shared the sentiment on-screen. "The Soundtrack of Our Lives," directed by Chris Perkel, gave a peek into Davis' personal and professional life. He lost his parents while he was an undergraduate at New York University, and later attended Harvard Law School. After working as a lawyer for Columbia Records, he was promoted to president in 1967, despite not desiring a career in music. "I had no inkling that music would be my passion of life," he said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday from his office at the new Sony building in Manhattan. "I had no money after my parents died, so I went through school on scholarships. And I was going to be a lawyer."

He said watching the documentary was somewhat hard, especially scenes with Houston, who died in 2012. "It was very emotional to see artists that I worked with 20, 30, 40 years ago have the same vivid memories of how we interrelated and what we worked on and issues that arose," he said. "It certainly gives a very compelling picture of the relationship that I had with Whitney Houston and of course that's filled with emotional impact, and it really showed sides of Whitney that no one has ever seen before."

Davis went on to become the world's most popular music executive, discovering talents such as Houston, Alicia Keys and Manilow and creating second acts for legends like Franklin and Santana. He even had a large role in shaping the careers of Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin and Billy Joel. "What a movie," Manilow yelled before he sang some of his popular hits.

Other performers included Kenny G and Dionne Warwick, who earned a standing ovation after she hit a high note. Davis founded Arista Records in 1975 and J Records in 2000. His documentary will be available on Apple Music. (The Journal Gazette, 4/20/2017)

  • At the Copa...Copacabana! Manilow musical arrives - Familiar with Lola? She was a showgirl apparently and if you want to know what happened to her you might want to get yourself to Newcastle’s Tyne Theatre this week as the curtain goes up on Copacabana. Yes the musical which of course has the same name as a massive hit single is opening on Tuesday for a five night run on Westgate Road.

The show, staged by West End Operatic Society, is set in Copacabana Night Club in New York City where the resident jack-of-all-trades (bartender, songwriter and musician!), Tony Forte, will be played by Liam Gilbert. “I’m more used to serious acting roles,” laughs Liam. “It’s a bit of a change of gear to suddenly be doing something light-hearted, but a lot of the music is just as enjoyable to sing!”

The musical follows Liam’s character - Tony - as his talent and charm win Lola, the girl responsible for Manilow’s most famous lyric: 'a yellow feather in her hair and a dress cut down to there.' Liam might be used to teaching serious poetry, but he seems to be quite enjoying swapping Browning for Barry Manilow: “It’s odd to be singing such famous - even iconic - lyrics, Barry Manilow is a great songwriter and it’s rather a privilege to be belting out some of his best songs in one of Newcastle’s oldest and most beautiful theatres.”

And what about Lola? Well the famous show girl will be played by Helen Cash. But will ambitious country girl Lola’s dreams of becoming a star come true? Well you’ll have to get yourself a ticket to find out. Copacabana is on until Saturday and tickets are available from the Tyne Theatre box office and online at Eventim. • TheatreZone's next season (2017-2018) takes on 'Copacabana' - TheatreZone is bringing high kickers and a youngster with an emotional green thumb to make its 13th season a lucky one, staging popular, name musicals "Copacabana" and "The Secret Garden." "Copacabana" is one of two returning from TheatreZone's early years; "Baby," is the other. Mark Danni, founder and artistic director of TheatreZone [said] "'Baby' is one of my all-time favorite shows. It's so well-written. But we ran it our first year or two, when we only had three or four performances, and I thought, 'not a lot of people have seen that.' The same was true of 'Copacabana,' which we did in our fourth season. People loved that. We all love Barry Manilow here." Productions now run for 11 performances.

Is the "Copacabana" the hottest spot north of Havana? Find out in this musical concocted on the foundation of a single Barry Manilow song by that name. The popular melody also buttressed a made-for-TV movie and an Atlantic City show, all in some form telling the tale of two nightclub performers whose love plans are thwarted by a gangster with a roving eye. TheatreZone first staged the musical in 2004, Danni said; its popularity then kept it high on the list of return requests.

Individual tickets, priced at $50 to $75, will go on sale May 1. Purchase them online at theatrezone-florida.com or by calling the box office 888-966-3352. The on-site box office is at at the G&L Theatre on the Community School of Naples, 13275 Livingston Road, North Naples. • Washington schoolboy brings Barry Manilow musical to life - Music and passion are always in fashion for a teen actor as he takes on a role in Copacabana. Jack Hindmarch, 16, from Washington, is preparing to help bring alive the colourful tale, with music by Barry Manilow, for a series of performances by the West End Operatic Society. The St. Robert of Newminster School pupil will take to the stage at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House, in Newcastle, when the show is performed from April 4-8. He’ll be featuring as Willie the waiter and a dancer in the musical, which is based on Barry Manilow’s 1978 song of the same name. It tells the story of wannabe singer Lola who meets aspiring songwriter Tony when both are contestants on a radio show. Tony is immediately smitten with Lola and assists her flailing attempts to break into show business. Speaking about how he got into musical theatre, Jack said: “I used to play for a football team when I was younger, but I soon got bored of it and decided that it wasn’t for me. “I had always loved seeing shows and watching musical films. I decided to go to a local drama workshop and I was hooked. I think my favourite part is dancing. I know it sounds cheesy but dance takes away any stress you are feeling because you can lose yourself through dance. I could dance for ages.” Copacabana will be at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House from April 4-8. Tickets from Tel. 0844 249 1000. (Sunderland Echo, 17 March 2017)

  • Desert Regional donates $3 million at Steve Chase awards - The Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards is known for its glitz and glamour. But it’s also known for surprises and this year was no exception. Toward the end of the evening Saturday, just before the Pointer Sisters took the stage, Carolyn Caldwell, CEO of Desert Regional Medical Center, part of Tenet Healthcare, announced a donation of $3 million to help the expansion of Desert AIDS Project. Caldwell said she was inspired by her friend Annette Bloch who donated $3 million at the event last year.

The gala is the largest fundraiser for DAP and is an opportunity to shine a light on those who have helped the cause. It’s been almost six years since Elizabeth Taylor died, but her spirit seemed ever present Saturday night as the actress-turned-activist was honored posthumously during the gala. Barry Manilow honored his longtime friend with the Partners for Life Award, presenting it to her grandchildren Tarquin and Naomi Wilding, who accepted it on Taylor’s behalf.

Manilow recalled the first time he met Taylor. It was 1984. She called him up and asked if he could entertain at a benefit. When he said yes, she burst into tears because she had called so many others and been turned down. “Back then, AIDS was incorrectly known as the gay man’s disease. And there was this terrible stigma attached to it,” Manilow said. That started a lifelong friendship between him and Taylor.

Manilow listed off Taylor’s accomplishment throughout the years, which included partnering with Dr. Michael Gottlieb and Dr. Mathilde Krim in 1985 to create amfAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Then in 1991, Taylor created her own organization, The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, to help those with HIV and AIDS receive direct care.

Last month, her organization awarded DAP with $15,000 to support clinical and social services programs for low-income people with HIV and AIDS. “She used her massive fame to shine a spotlight on the AIDS pandemic when nobody else would. I know she would be thrilled at this award and that you all remembered her,” said Manilow... (The Desert Sun, 2/12/2017)

  • Thousands raise AIDS awareness at Steve Chase Awards in Palm Springs - Saturday, thousands of people gathered in Palm Springs for the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, the Desert AIDS Project's biggest fundraiser of the year. "There's so many humanitarians in our community, and they are moved to help out others," Desert AIDS Project CEO David Brinkman said. Some big names came out for a night of music, dancing and raising money for the organization helping Valley resident living with HIV and AIDS.

Among those at the event included Emcee Lance Bass of N'SYNC, and pop music icon and longtime Palm Springs resident Barry Manilow. "They do wonderful work,' Manilow said. "They've got this organization, they've got this wonderful place that's grown bigger and bigger, that gives so much to the community, and to people that are suffering with AIDS."

Manilow also took time to honor late friend and actress Elizabeth Taylor. Accepting the award on her behalf, Naoimi and Tarquin Wilding said they remember their grandmother being a pioneer caring for people living with HIV and AIDS. "When I was 17, she took me to the Freddie Mercury concert in London," Naoimi Wilding said. "And I think at that age, I didn't fully understand the work that they were doing, and how important she had become for the HIV and AIDS cause to see her stand in front of how many thousands of people, and to see the effect that they had just hearing their words."

Now, they hope that effect will continue to make its mark, especially in the Valley for years to come. "That's what we're all about at the end of the day, is helping one another out," Brinkman said. Brinkman said they expected to raise more than $1 million to help about 3,600 patients and clients across the Valley. (KESQ, 2/11/2017)
